We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

would oh I see

Being treated as a close contact means isolation so someone should tell that person to stay in!

SirSamuelVimes · 07/12/2020 09:21

DH has now finished work until after the new year (months on furlough meant a huge chunk of unused holiday time) so we are off to IKEA to celebrate. Will have to mask up obviously, but I need to look at some different scenery, and frankly, buy some pretty shit I don't really need.

Decorated our Xmas tree last night. I am managing to slowly sneak more and more Harry Potter stuff onto it! I'm up to seven baubles now, plus a snowy owl as a tree topper Xmas Grin which is cheering me up somewhat. DH wouldn't agree to a HP tree if I proposed it but if I just slowly adjust the bauble balance I should be at complete nerdery in the next five years or so Xmas Wink.

TheOrchidKiller · 07/12/2020 09:24

People are “asking to be treated as close contacts, to be on the safe side”
They can crack on. Leaves more space in the shops & parks for the rest of us who don't have the luxury of being able to stay at home for 2 weeks prior to Christmas.

Although I'm sure the same people would be somewhat upset if the staff in supermarkets & warehouses, & the delivery drivers also took the same stance, & their shopping failed to turn up.

@Smallandimperfectlyformed
Don't feel guilty. Get out there & enjoy it! The way that they stuff us back into higher tiers makes it even more important to make the most of things that are open.

I have a few days off work now - for my own sanity. Smile

This.

My DC are back to their sports clubs this week. I've rather enjoyed a quieter life, but dd loves her football, and its been good for her. Not looking forward to going swimming with ds brrr. Have to get in with him as teacher is not allowed , but 8 parents and children in the small pool is covid secure apparently. I was the only parent who questioned this set up!

zigaziga · 07/12/2020 09:36

@AcornAutumn spirit of the rules Angry. The people saying that are the people who were going on about the “loophole” that meant you could see one other person on a walk during the last lockdown. Just because you’ve found a loophole doesn’t mean you should be doing it blah blah.
A sentence in the legislation spelling out that you can meet with one other person (and under 5s don’t count) is not a loophole FGS!

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 07/12/2020 09:38

Reading another thread, another inequality between tiers has occurred to me.
We are tier three. Someone in tier two has been advised to look for cafés with outdoor heaters so that they can meet family. Even if we make it to tier two, those things won't have been invested in here because of all the uncertainty. So we'll still have nowhere comfortable to meet up and so many less options for those who feel more comfortable being outside than doing the track and trace dance indoors.

AcornAutumn · 07/12/2020 09:43

There’s a comment on AIBU about how we should have a 3 month lockdown every year and I can’t tell if it’s a joke or not.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 09:53

That is happening here people meeting outside cafes under pagan things in the rain I noticed, a sign saying can only some inside with your own household. No heaters though, in December a bit cold for it.

Have cleaned out the fish tank and they seem a bit happier. Lots os emotional family stuff here and trying to have a bit of space from it. Felt like escaping Shirley Valentine style yesterday- they were all driving me mad.

Made it out of the house and picked up awful Christmas jumpers from the charity shop. DC refusing to wear one of them understandably as it has a penis style knitted carrot on the front sort of drooping...it made us laugh though. I only bought them because the festive charity shop lady said people had their eye on them and probably they would go soon. A good sales lady perhaps. The other one has a reindeer on so not as bad.

School asking for things for the food bank today, did kind of think myself of going to the food back recently but hey ho. They seem to want chocolate and biscuits and tinned fish so sent them some custard creams and tinned sardines.

Going to try going for a swim soon, last time I chatted to a 70 something lady as we waiting outside for our pre-booked slot times, she was cheerful and worse a yellow swim hat. Said a friend had warned her not to go 'putting herself at risk' apparently but she was just cracking on as had put weight on during lockdown. We swam in the slow lane, a nice bit of normality. We both agreed some parts of the swimming pool experience are better such as it being quiet and not having to use lockers (you can just hang your stuff on pegs or chairs by the poolside) but going out the concrete fire escape and not having hair dryers is annoying and unpleasant in the cold weather. But you can use the hand dryers apparently for hair if you put your head down.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 09:53

Pagoda, not pagan Hmm

Aww. Do you think they swim round thinking “where is that cleaner we booked ages ago?”
Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 10:21

Maybe!

Good to hear about the sport returning. Must make such a difference.

This.

This drives me mad. It's so bloody obvious that lockdown living can only be comfortable if you are in the class of people who can work from home, get food / gifts / miscellaneous stuff delivered and have unlimited utilities on tap. And that lifestyle is not only a) only available to some people, not all, and b) 100% reliant on a whole other class of people who are still going out to work, often on public transport, often working in conditions where distancing is impractical.

Smug sanctimony combined with "I'm alright Jack" twattishness boils my piss.

The loopholes are there so the government can carry on with their lives as normal. Loopholes are deliberate, not accidental. There is no shame or guilt involved in using them.

AcornAutumn · 07/12/2020 10:53

SirSamuel I’m afraid one of my neighbours was a “smug about furlough” guy, though he did have sympathy for others, which goes a long way.

But he’s now lost his job and seems utterly shocked. I don’t understand how it can be a shock after six months on furlough. He keeps saying “I’ll bounce back, it’s just so shocking”. It’s about as shocking as night following day!!

Yes.
I don't begrudge anyone a lovely time this Christmas. But lots of people won't be able to get time off over those 5 days, or meet up with family. I'm in that category, & whilst it's a relief in some ways, it also sucks because who knows when we'll get the opportunity to meet again?

I wish Christmas would hurry up & pass now. January can do one, too. Bring on the spring!

MissEWeatherwax · 07/12/2020 11:19

Yes, the I’m alright Jack are so smug. Couldn’t care less about the work behind the scenes. Good job the broadband worker goes to work. The BT overreach box nearest to me. There is always a little tent in front working in all weathers.
I’m looking forward to Christmas this year, I’m normally bah humbug. Can’t wait to see DP and my DSis and DN. Couldn’t in rule of 6, because we were too many.
I can’t wait to see the back of 2020, it one quiz question I will always remember. Hopefully it will just be a little footnote in history.

😂 That's hysterical laughter. Yeah I'd love to have my income reduced by 75% for a quarter of every year 🙄🙄🙄

Weneedmusicandtheatre · 07/12/2020 11:47

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Sorry, forgot an explanation, melomakarona are sweets flavoured with honey, oranges and nuts and kourabiedes are sugar dusted butter cookies.
Yum! Recipes please?

IKR? And so many people out of work. And be cut off from loved ones.

The poster hasn’t returned to say if it’s a joke.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/12/2020 12:13

There is a long between avoidance and anxiety- I think lockdown can cause a cycle as it leads to avoidance and then increased anxiety in some people.

I'm off swimming soon. I have decided to stop discussing activities with some people because of the replies. For example I mentioned it is quiet "I'm not surprised" or when I mentioned it to a school mum "Goodness, surprised that is open" stuff like that. Feel a bit sensitive at times so just going to crack on and avoid the people.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 07/12/2020 13:08

Made it home from the blistering cold walk. DD cried at one point, I think because of the chill, so we came home early. Managed only three "f**k you Boris" today Grin

TabbyStar · 07/12/2020 13:12

I went swimming on Saturday and the pool was quite busy. It's a posh private gym though and it amuses me that the "maximum number using this..." is higher than the number I've ever seen using anything, e.g. 8 in a swim lane when it's pretty much never been more than 2 in the 11 years I've been a member. Really sad to see the café all packed away, people dropping off kids for lessons can sit in the steam room but not metres apart in the huge café area.
