We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

Are you okay @AcornAutumn? You sound a bit down.
Can I ask a silly question please about the vaccine. I’m very prone to scarring for some reason and have rather nice tattoos that I’m very fond of on both upper arms. If I can have the vaccine, which isn’t guaranteed because of my random allergies, will they be affected? I can’t ask anywhere else as I’ll get told protecting others is more important that my ink!

ISaySteadyOn · 05/12/2020 11:04

I don't know. If it is like the TB vaccine, possibly.

Thank you

I’m actually better than I was, the sun helps.

I have a flu jab every year and it makes no difference to the appearance of skin so I’d imagine your tattoos will be fine. I think they try to avoid the ink so they can see if you have a skin irritation after? So do you ha e spot uncovered that would be okay for just a needle tip?

Willow2017 · 05/12/2020 11:31

Well done Livin it always seems to be the easy target doesn't it? Bloody power mad misogynists. The fact that they dont actually have any power seems to escape them.

TheOrchidKiller · 05/12/2020 13:26

@Iheartmysmart
Not a silly question. I have taken part in the Oxford vaccine trial. Still don't know if I got the covid jab or the meningitis jab (the comparison vaccine) but both were bog-standard injections with bog-standard needles.

We were asked to look out for redness or swelling around the injection site. I had 1-2mm for a couple of days the first time & nothing after the booster jab, & none of the other people I know in the trial have reported scars.

I suppose we're all different. The nurse doing my flu jab said some people have tougher skin, others bruise easily.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/12/2020 14:30

I remember DS2 having his pre-school round of jabs... the needle went in and he turned to look at her with the most filthy look!

I’m glad you’re feeling better Acorn - the sun does help.
Thank you everyone for replying. I still have scars from very minor cuts and burns from years ago which apparently would have faded to nothing in most people. I’m an oddity. My tattoos cover most of my upper arms but I’m sure if there is a will there’s a way!
Just been out to a nearby town and the Christmas market was running and there was a vintage steam engine chugging along. It felt normal!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 05/12/2020 15:41

There was a Christmas market in my town this morning. Unfortunately I have a stomach problem this week so wasn't able to go which is a shame as I love these things! Some friends of mine went and posted some nice pictures of themselves on Facebook. They were wearing masks, even though it is outside, and yet despite that one of their friends posted saying not much social distancing. Grr! It's so dispiriting seeing so many people raining on other people's parades. He responded by saying that most but not all people were wearing masks and the photos made it look like they were closer and as they were outside it was less of a risk than supermarkets. All I saw was some nice pictures of people enjoying themselves!

Just been reading this blithering on from the BBC about something called "Vaccine plus" basically seems to say we'll have the vaccine and all the other stuff like social distancing and tracing and isolating as well...trying to avoid the BBC really I thought we were going to move on in the Spring a little. It is the thought of the isolating stuff going on and on gets to me really, how disruptive and stressful it all is.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 05/12/2020 16:07

I read that earlier Orangeblossom77777, it was depressing wasn't it? I have just decided to ignore most of the doom mongering I see and am convincing myself things will be much better in the Spring. I am just trying to take things one step at a time, each day is another day towards normality returning (I hope!)

Orangeblossom77777 · 05/12/2020 16:22

I thought it was going to be positive! Should have known better it being the BBC... it reminds me of a ruminating, hypochondriac at times...this was far better just a few weeks ago from the Triggle bloke.

Orangeblossom77777 · 05/12/2020 16:23

That was from before the vaccine announcements as well.

wanderings · 05/12/2020 16:36

I'm sure the BBC's strings are pulled by Her Majesty's Clowns: they say whatever the government orders them to say, hence the doom mongering, the "be careful" message, the constant photos of people in face nappies (I wound up the dementors by using that term on another thread! Smile), and most importantly, the total pretence that people are meekly accepting all the Stasi's diktats, instead of protesting in London.

CruCru · 05/12/2020 16:57

I’m really sorry to hear about your FIL, Reedwarbler.

I really hope Spring sees a return to normality but I'm not convinced, it's been too easy to lock us all up. My husband thinks if it goes on too long people will start to protest more and start opening pubs etc for themselves which is a fair point but my fear is that people are quite happy to sit at home so why would they.

amicissimma · 05/12/2020 17:04

Ah, yes. The BBC.

DH and I entertained each other on our walk today with the story of the River Lugg in Herefordshire. Last night the BBC news told us, in horrified tones, of the 'wildlife crime' committed there. It certainly looked rather barren. However, reading in the Hereford Times and the Daily Telegraph it appears that the clearance had been done by the landowner, as he is required to do, to prevent flooding due to a build up of silt and vegetation, and the Environment Agency were aware that it needed doing and the Parish Council were in favour.

I know nothing about the area, but I think there was more to this than the BBC reported.

Orangeblossom77777 · 05/12/2020 17:13

They were going on after the first lockdown, about how charity shops were not going to be able to cope with donations, needing to quarantine it etc and it being dangerous etc etc...My local shop soon had a sign out asking for more and happily took stuff...

Orangeblossom77777 · 05/12/2020 17:15

They seem really neurotic don't they. I also say on their feed thing they were saying 'we are reporting from isolation at home' or something so maybe they are just sah workers who don't go out much...or something. I read the are addicted to toxic twitter, which makes sense.

wanderings · 05/12/2020 17:15

Just thinking about the "town centre" teams: are they ever mistaken for the dreaded chuggers? Whenever I see somebody in uniform approaching me with a sense of purpose, I immediately think "chugger" or "seller".

And these days, what was once a smart "uniform" is now a hi-vi, a baseball cap, or a lanyard.

wanderings · 05/12/2020 17:24

@mightbealittlemad I'm sure we will see some "illegal" pub reopenings in the spring: there is at least one salon that opened regardless, and refused to pay any fines. People might be happy to be dormant over winter and sit at home, but as soon as the weather starts to get brighter, people won't stand for it. I've heard that spring is one of the peak times for suicides, as people feel like "springing into action": people might be motivated to rebel then. Also, I think there will be more and more feeling of "they told us the vaccine would solve it all, why is nothing getting better"? Also, when it hits the 1-year mark, as the media is certain to remind us, people really will feel a huge sense of frustration, and want to DO SOMETHING. Remember also that the tiers legislation expires mid-February: the government hopes we'll forget that. Don't forget it, and make sure MPs know we haven't forgotten it.

Also, as Uncle Boris likes "neat" endings, it would be so like to him to want to declare some sort of normal exactly one year after it all started. He missed out on his dream of being the hero who saved Christmas (even he's not bothering to pretend he has), but he might try to spin it as "I restored normal in less than one year".

Went into my local Joules shop today for socks- saw a rather snazzy looking hat and tried it on. Went to put it back and a sales lady (who had crept up silently behind me) said (in an unnecessarily snappy tone IMO!) ‘we have to quarantine it now you’ve tried it on’ and snatched it away. Have you ever heard anything more ridiculous? It was a hat! I wore woolly gloves! I was muzzled! How on earth was my hair going to pass fucking covid onto a hat?!! Didn’t hang around it to buy what i went in for after that as didn’t dare touch anything 😳

It was my understanding all shops do this

Don’t Waterstones quarantine books if you pick them up and look at them? Or have they stopped?

NannyGythaOgg · 05/12/2020 17:39

Reported on FB today from a Yorkshire newspaper that a guy from Leeds got the train to York to visit a pub.
Under the article, all the comments were dementors largely on the lines of 'do as you're told or we will never get out of this'. On the FB report there were a couple of thousands Like, Love and Laughs compared to about 60 Angry/Sad. The silent majority want out.

Also, over and over again, I am amazed at people's inability to grasp that the 'huge' differences in number usually equate to tiny numbers when we stop looking at cases per 100,000.

Leeds has multiples of cases compared to York. 1 in 2000 (ish)York and 3 in 2000 (ish) in Leeds - so the chances of this guy spreading covid are minimal.

wanderings · 05/12/2020 17:45

All shops are supposed to do it, but I bet many don't.

I myself would be sorely tempted to make a witty retort to the staff member, but I know that she's doing what her boss has ordered her to do, who in turn is doing what Uncle Boris has ordered her to do. But I probably would not buy anything. I am very much voting with my wallet: the dementory shops do not get my money.

@Reedwarbler

I am so sorry to hear about your FIL. I have read your previous posts on what has been happening and it is just awful .

I lost my dad last year after advanced dementia and awful as that was , when I read stories like yours I am actually glad that he's not here any given the frightening experience going into hospital seems to be for the elderly.

Thanks
