We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

I think Madely often acts like an 8 year old

Fair point @NannyGythaOgg Grin

So sorry for your loss reedwarbler and the manner of it. Flowers

I'd never liked Richard Madely before, but that gives me a new respect for him. That interview rings very true, especially with his later comments comparing the government to teachers losing control. I remember being 8 years old, and ranting in a similar way about primary school punishing whole year groups because of the actions of a few. I once dropped all my inhibitions, and made such a rant in front of the whole year group, to stunned silence, and had to be taken aside to calm down. The teachers didn't relent on punishing the whole year group, but I felt some pride in making myself heard.

@AcornAutumn That admission about closing the Belgian shops "because we can" doesn't surprise me at all. Freedom-loving Uncle Boris would never admit it, but I'm certain that one reason for imposing lockdown at all was to set a precedent of "this is what the government can do to keep the plebs in order, obey or else".

Keep writing to MPs, everybody. Make them work for their all-expenses-paid (they think we've forgotten that scandal) comfortable living, and they should be taking a 20% pay cut, as they have forced so many of us to do. It might feel like pissing in the wind, but doing so is putting the public disquiet on record, so they cannot keep claiming that the public wants more restrictions. I had my third reply this year from my MP: the typical politician's reply, "we have every sympathy for businesses..." "nobody wants restrictions..." "I am pleased to announce that all venues in tier 2 can open again..." "the excellent progress about vaccine development..." (they didn't reply until after the vaccine news). The only thing worth noting was "the restrictions are not permanent", because I had written several paragraphs expressing concern that the government intends to make restrictions permanent by stealth. I also expressed my disgust at the infantilising ways in which which the government talks to the people, but there was no comment on that.

bluetongue · 05/12/2020 07:23

The Victorian government here in Australia admitted that they introduced a curfew partly for the ‘shock and awe’ value.

I went to my work Christmas do last night. I’m not a regular drinker and unlimited drinks were included in the price. Luckily my hangover only lasted until lunchtime today Grin

Despite it not usually being my thing I actually had a pretty good time. The included food was a bit average but I guess that’s pretty standard for Christmas functions. It’s more there to help soak up the alcohol!

The best bit about the night was that I was almost able to forget that Covid existed. I only saw two people in masks the whole night Shock

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 05/12/2020 07:49

I’m so sorry about your FIL, @Reedwarbler. Hope you and your DH are doing OK Flowers.

I am making the best of a grotty situation at work: we have to move offices (why? Who thought making us move now was a good idea?) which means everyone has to come in to pack their stuff. If we all have to be in, I reckoned we could commandeer the biggest meeting room and have a team meeting. It will be a meeting - I have an agenda and everything- but there will also be wine and cake. I was v touched by how keen people are to see each other.

Reedwarbler · 05/12/2020 07:54

Thank you all for the kind thoughts, it means a lot. What a wonderful lot you are.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 05/12/2020 08:17

@Iheartmysmart

I really couldn’t care less if people wear a mask or not. What really pisses me off are the “I have (insert relevant whatever) but I can still wear a mask so why can’t you” people! Fuck off the lot of you... sorry wine has been consumed! Lots of wine!
@Iheartmysmart day before yesterday, I nipped to my local shopping centre and there were 2 covid wardens lurking about.

Three lads in their teens went in as I was approaching the entrance, no mask, no problem. A middle aged woman walks in as I do, no mask. She was stopped and asked why she's not wearing one.
She starts to explain and I (rudely, sorry) butted in and asked why she was being asked.
I stated that you cannot ask and one started going on about public health, so I asked why they were asking this woman and not the 3 teens....no answer. I took their names and complained to the Council.

Iheartmysmart · 05/12/2020 08:26

@LivinLaVidaLoki Good for you. As many of us as possible need to start challenging the mask zealots and the fact that they seem to pick on easy targets. Six foot man without a mask - no problem at all sir, woman without a mask - explain yourself. It’s very wrong.

Reedwarbler · 05/12/2020 08:28

Good for you @LivinLaVidaLoki. I do wonder what sort of person would enjoy this job because they have absolutely no enforcement powers. Are they people who always wanted to be a school prefect?
I know times are hard, but still..

Blobby10 · 05/12/2020 08:31

@Reedwarbler my sincere condolences to you and your family. Your poor poor fil 💐

wanderings · 05/12/2020 08:36

@LivinLaVidaLoki Were they shop staff, or the council-appointed "Covid Marshals" that Uncle Boris was banging on about months ago, when he said it would be "normalish by Christmas"? Have they finally arrived on their unicorns? I'm not doubting your account at all, I just doubted that they would ever appear. Shock

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 05/12/2020 08:43

Great post @wanderings - Inquiry into the human rights implications of the lockdown. They're asking for submissions here. It could be a good way of getting voices heard.

@wanderings our council have a Town Centre Team. They generally wander round giving help, advice and directions to people. More have now been recruited and their list of duties has been expanded to help with social distancing around town. Not that it's a massive issue, the place is dead.

bakingcupcakes · 05/12/2020 08:54

Good for you for butting in Loki I often wish I was brave enough to challenge in these situations.

@Reedwarbler That's so awful about your FIL. I hope you and DH are managing ok.

We have our santa experience booked for today. Hoping it's reasonable. I've had 3 emails about covid safety from them now so I'm not feeling overly positive.

SirSamuelVimes · 05/12/2020 08:55

Good for you @LivinLaVidaLoki.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 05/12/2020 09:17

@Reedwarbler Your post stuck with me for a long time after reading it. Thanks for you and Mr Reedwarbler.

Evenstar · 05/12/2020 09:26

Thank you @LivinLaVidaLoki for what you did, I have noticed that nobody seems keen to challenge teens, adult men or anyone that can’t be bullied 🙁 it must have meant a lot to that poor woman to have someone in her corner. I get very anxious when I am on my own.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/12/2020 09:46

There was an article about one of the local towns recruiting some in the neighbouring borough.

There are street marshals in the city and have been for a few years. We were having significant issues with foul mouthed street drunks and "mamba zombies" and it was getting to a point where you couldn't walk through town without the children seeing or hearing things that you'd really rather children weren't exposed to.

The tendancy to pick on nice, meek little women does concern me. I haven't experienced it yet. I can fight my corner in my head or on a keyboard but I'm not confrontational in person. My smart arse remarks tend to come half an hour too late Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 05/12/2020 10:18

@LivinLaVidaLoki, that would have meant so much to that woman. And, as someone like her, it means a lot to know that there are people like you out there.

Thank you Flowers.

I have said it before and will say it again now. I am privileged to have gotten to know you all through these threads. You are some of the kindest, most considering and compassionate women I have ever 'met'.

TabbyStar · 05/12/2020 10:24

Well done from me too Living.

I pointed out on FB yesterday that only 0.08% of our town population tested positive in the last week, around 20 people, yet we are in tier 3. Only a couple of people have liked my post so far, but I bet there were a lot more people surprised by how few people have it here, as many seem to think danger lurks in every supermarket aisle.

DominaShantotto · 05/12/2020 10:42

Thinking of you all @Reedwarbler and so angry for you.

Kids are writing their Xmas cards to go into quarantine. I despair - I continue to despair.

AcornAutumn · 05/12/2020 10:44

My computer is woeful today, I can only see half a screen. I think this might be the end 😱

Thanks to the poster who linked to the consultation

Didn’t know that about curfew in oz

How are the Australians, especially Victorians, not more angry?

Well done to poster who stepped in re masks.

Sun is out today thank goodness.
