We might be craving tiles, but we'll leave the woodchip and artex alone unless we're feeling very brave...

Welcome into another thread covering the whole range of life and death, novelty vegetables, DIY, any other randomness and musings about a certain pandemic.

@Willow2017 that is unbelievable, I am taking part in a vaccine trial and have been encouraging people to get it when approved. That makes it sound as though nothing will change! This is utter madness, we need to be allowed to have a normal life again once the vaccine is rolled out.

Pootle40 · 30/11/2020 23:17

Oh dear I just had a multi reply rant on another thread. All the people telling the lady with COVID that she can't go for a walk at 6am (she's live rurally). I literally lost my shit at all the people saying 'this why this country is in the state it's in'.

I couldn't help it. Just so incensed at the fact that all logic has left the building. Is it just me?

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 01/12/2020 02:03

I’m a lurker on these threads but never posted, I haven’t been able to keep up with them all but thanks to all of you who regularly post and save my sanity, I turn to this thread when I have stupidly read a dementor one like I have tonight on the vaccine being made compulsory Why can no question the government without insults and bullying? This blind acceptance scares me and anyone who even slightly questions the approved narrative is subject to a massive pile on and yes it’s all the usual suspects.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 01/12/2020 07:00

Just saw this in the Guardian.
Interesting.

"Labour to abstain in vote on Covid tiers as Tories threaten to rebel
Keir Starmer decides to withdraw backing for PM’s coronavirus restrictions"

So what happens if it doesn't pass?

Iheartmysmart · 01/12/2020 07:35

I’ve just ventured into the vaccine thread! Bloody hell, if you don’t agree to having something injected into your body then you are automatically a conspiracy theorist and an anti vaxxer! Nothing other than blind obedience is permitted.
I have no issues with vaccinations, they are truly a wonderful invention in most cases but I do have a massive problem with compulsory by stealth.

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2020 07:41

@LivinLaVidaLoki it will pass as I understand it.

Another example of Labour having no position or opposition, just like with Brexit.

Apparently Tory MPs bring bribed with promotions etc to toe the line so Labour are needed.

I’d had high hopes for Starmer but am very unimpressive

BogRollBOGOF · 01/12/2020 07:48

I didn't dare reply on that vaccine one.

Freedom is not being forced to have something injected into your body in order to engage with access to health services, education, shops, travel and other services.
How Gilead can you get???

(How that tallies with the current priority system that doesn't refer to the majority of u50s I don't know and that gives me hope because by the time I get near the list, the hazard to society is greatly diminished)

bluetongue · 01/12/2020 07:54

I was having an argument about masks on Facebook this morning (I know, I know).

In Melbourne, Australia they haven’t had a new case for 30 days and they’re trying to entice workers back to the office. Only problem is masks are to compulsory in the office. Even while sitting at your socially distanced desk. So many people agreed with this! It just seems like complete overkill. Sure wear a mask on the train to work, even walking around the office but at your desk when the city has officially eliminated the virus? Madness. Even if there a few unknown cases still around the risk is absolutely tiny.

ISaySteadyOn · 01/12/2020 08:11

It's not about safety. At that point, it's to make it as difficult to communicate with each other as possible so everyone will stay scared.

In pre lockdown times, can you think of a government that made people cover their faces that wasn't/isn't repressive and totalitarian? Because I can't.

The vaccine thing is chilling and I hope you're right, BOGOF.

Evenstar · 01/12/2020 08:17

Just to clarify I am in no way in favour of people being forced to have the vaccine, I just feel very disappointed if it turns out to make no difference and we have to carry on living this half life with masks and social distancing. It feels like the hope of a normal life is receding further away, life shouldn’t be just about still being alive.

pearlypidge · 01/12/2020 08:18

I don't get the arguments for making vaccines compulsory to go places, I really don't.

If you are worried about catching covid when you go to the pub or get on a plane, then have the vaccine. Then you presumably don't need to worry about whether the person sitting next to you has been vaccinated or not.

If you want to take your chances, then don't have the vaccine.

Personal responsibility for your own health, surely.

And yes, I know, what about people that can't have the vaccine - but then they already face risks from eg measles-- etc, and we don't force people to have those vaccines. At least, we don't yet.... But logically, if you force people to have the covid vaccine, then surely the same arguments apply for any available vaccine - where do you draw the line? Simple, you don't make vaccination a condition of entry--

And anyway, if you deny entry to pubs and shops to the unvaccinated, then you face losing all the custom from under 50s for quite some time - and I'm guessing they are probably bigger spenders than the over 80s!

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 08:20

Interesting. Labour is planning on abstaining from the vote today on the new Tiers, even after talking with Chris Whitty. Mentioned this over there no comment really. Thought they would be very concerned about that but no. Confused but they are funny about Tory backbenchers doing the same...

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 08:23

Ah sorry see you are chatting about this already, need to wake up...got my coffee now. Wonder what will happen. Lib dems also against. "Too dangerous" apparently Hmm

MaudesMum · 01/12/2020 08:39

Michael Gove on R4 at the moment is doing a great job in turning the entire listening audience against any form of restrictions, ever. Patronising, slimey, git.

One Tory minister two days into his new job (as Minister concerned with screwing up vaccination delivery) says one thing about possible restrictions against the non-vaccinated without thinking through how it would work. Its one of those things that won't turn into anything, and will be quietly shelved, because it just wouldn't work practically.

Reedwarbler · 01/12/2020 08:45

Thanks for the warning on vaccine threads, I will keep away, especially as I am feeling quite cheery this morning.
I don't see how you can run test and trace alongside a vaccine drive. Has this been explained anywhere? There is no point testing vaccinated people or puting them in quarantine, otherwise a vaccine is pointless. But Boris having to isolate recently, despite having had Covid, shows how ridiculous the system is. If people say, 'ah well, he could have been infected and pass it on', well, how?
If having the vaccine gets us travelling again, we will obviously have it. We are getting on, so if there turn out to be long term problems with it, perhaps we will die before they become apparent.
However, stating that a vaccine that is only a few months old may ultimately turn out to have health risks as well as health benefits does not make you an anti-vaxxer, except in the topsy turvy world of MN.

starfish88 · 01/12/2020 08:54

I'm also not even convinced it will be needed for travel outside of maybe Australia and New Zealand. I think Dubai is a good example. Off the quarantine list and free test on arrival for tourists from the UK. Then you stay in your hotel until the result is texted to you in 12-24 hours and you're free to do as you please. Masks everywhere but everything is open as normal. And concerts etc are back with social distancing. They are keen to get people back and spending, especially as, unlike Europe, they are a winter sun destination so can't wait for the summer for tourism to pick up. I think most places will follow to be honest when it comes down to financials. At least I hope so.

I'm in no way anti-vax, DS has had all the vaccines up to date plus the optional extras. I was very pro vaccine but as soon as something is forced people rightly ask why it needs to be if it's such a great thing. This year has done a lot to erode people's trust in science not because of flaws in the actual science but for allowing it to be misused in a campaign of fear.

starfish88 · 01/12/2020 08:59

I was also watching His Dark materials yesterday, very strong themes of encouraging questioning and free-thinking. We need more TV like that.

110APiccadilly · 01/12/2020 09:06

I'm another who is pro vaccine on the whole (on the fence about flu jabs, and I wouldn't get chicken pox etc, privately). We've just been going through the rigmarole of getting Piccalilli registered with the doctor (made harder as there's a significant delay in issuing birth certificates at the moment, but we think we've managed) asap partly so she can have her jabs in due course.

I am completely against vaccines being mandatory, including by the back door. I'm not keen to have the Covid one for the next 5 years or so (and Piccalilli gets it over my dead body before then, but given it's not licenced for children that issue shouldn't arise.)

Blobby10 · 01/12/2020 09:08

Sitting outside an urgent care centre waiting for OH to be called in. There are six poorly people standing outside in temps near freezing - once assessed they have to go back to their cars to wait for a summons . OH fell onto a blanket chest on Friday night and thinks he’s broken a rib- needs an X-ray and strong pain killers so he can go back to work. But he has a chesty cough so they are treating him like a typhoid carrier! They took him through a side door and the nurse was covered top to toe in plastic, masks and visor !! He had covid four weeks ago and had a negatove test two weeks ago 😩😩😩 common sense and an acknowledgement that covid isn’t the only infection available seems to be in short supply 😡

ISaySteadyOn · 01/12/2020 09:24

@110APiccadilly, glad to see you. How are you feeling? You sum up my views on vaccines beautifully.

It's amazing how Covid has become the only existing disease in the world. Cynical today, I am afraid.

Worldgonecrazy · 01/12/2020 09:27

I read that Those who are very obese and/or diabetic will be prioritised over 50-65 year olds for the vaccine. That says a lot about actual risk factors.

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2020 09:35

@Worldgonecrazy Christ, I’d better get dieting or this could be embarrassing 😂

ISaySteadyOn · 01/12/2020 09:43

I know this isn't really related to the thread as a whole, but a lot of us on it are neurodiverse. My entire family definitely is, me, DH, and our DC. So what do you do when your needs clash?

I am trying really hard to keep our family life smooth but I feel really alone with it except for DH. It's as though the world believes that if you are ND, you couldn't possibly get married and have a family.

I'm feeling very well, thank you! Just getting into the swing of things but I'm lucky in that I've produced a fairly good sleeper (obviously she wakes up in the night but then once she's fed she goes back to sleep quite quickly.) I, on the other hand, am a naturally poor sleeper, so I'm used to broken nights already!

Feeling a bit sad that so many friends and family want to meet her but can't though. (Not because I'm stopping them, but because the friends and family are too worried, or are living in that there plague infested England, so our lord and master has decreed that they must not come.) I'm also the kind of person that normally around now would be starting to look at what mums and tots sessions are available in my area, and at the moment the answer is nothing.

countrygirl99 · 01/12/2020 10:46

@Blobby10 my dad is 93 and very frail - recently spent 2 weeks in hospital with pneumonia where they discovered that he had had a heart attack in the previous 2 weeks. They know it was 2 weeks because it was since his previous admission with a UTI. He had to have a blood test last week before treatment for his osteoporosis next January. Blood test was at the GPs. They made him wait outside in November! It wasn't even under cover so thank goodness that at least it wasn't raining. Absolutely no common sense at all.
