Are the vaccines proven to reduce transmission? Because I had read somewhere that they weren't.... if so, what's the point in them for healthcare staff who are low risk?

I though the trails were showing people didn't develops Covid-19 symptoms but they haven't got the data yet to show if that meant they didn't replicate the virus so it could be passed on asymptomaticly.

I think it's the case it's extremely likely it stops transmission but don't have the sciencetific data to prove that yet so that gets pointd out - but it likely does.

WouldBeGood · 23/11/2020 10:43

Good Twitter link on the Oxford vaccine and transmission

twitter.com/apsmunro/status/1330821099626635267?s=21

Orangeblossom7777 · 23/11/2020 10:46

From that link:

" Phase 3 interim analysis including 131 Covid-19 cases indicates that the vaccine is 70.4% effective when combining data from two dosing regimens
In the two different dose regimens vaccine efficacy was 90% in one and 62% in the other
Higher efficacy regime used a halved first dose and standard second dose "

Oh that is interesting, the 70% was the combination of both but one much higher.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/11/2020 10:47

Oxford University vaccine is highly effective

They do seem to have some data on transmission with this with one of their protocols.

There were also lower levels of asymptomatic infection in the low-followed-by-high-dose group which "means we might be able to halt the virus in its tracks," Prof Pollard said.

So I think it just a lack of data and scientists and reporters being cautious and acknowledging that as a caveat.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/11/2020 10:47

x-post there.

They had found other vaccines like flu and the BCG may be offering some protection from covid - the suggestion was a primed immune system.

www.diabetes.co.uk/news/2020/oct/nhs-flu-vaccine-found-to-offer-protection-against-covid-19.html
www.newscientist.com/article/2242866-bcg-vaccine-helps-fight-infections-by-boosting-immune-cell-production/

Wonder if that why they tried the half dose first protocol then full dose - the one that they found offers 90% protection.

Curly “ Given the choice, I'd steal a nice looking one from outside Waitrose!”

Great plan. Bonus points for the credit card.

Double bonus- no pain and vouchers, what's not to like? Lol
WouldBeGood · 23/11/2020 10:58

Although it also appears that asymptomatic spread is incredibly rare.

AcornAutumn · 23/11/2020 11:18

Has something dramatic happened? Or some kind of warning in the Zoe app?

I just had to go to the Post Office Collection place to get some stuff from work.

Practically everyone I saw en route was wearing a mask outdoors. It was a massive difference to Friday.

It was hugely striking. I hide from MSM so I wondered if I’d missed something.

Is it colder where you are this week? I have kept my mask on outside occasionally when it's been chilly for the single reason that it keeps my nose warm!
DominaShantotto · 23/11/2020 11:43

The masks outside seem to come and go - and probably be linked to cooler weather as I think people are less desperate to rip them off if they're obtaining nose-warming properties from them.

I'm just flat, veering toward despair at the moment (not the dementor DESPAIR) - tired, overworked, sick of pissing timetabling changes constantly - I did mention to the staff that I was beginning to feel that the last minute changes were running on the assumption that we had nothing else to be doing as everywhere was shut (and got an agreement)! This morning we were due to have face to face sessions starting at 11am - then changed at about 9am... and uni is an hour drive away in quiet traffic - so I didn't go in!

I've been listening to this lecture set for about the last 2 hours and none of the content is going in! I have promised myself if we're still in blended learning bullshit territory next year - I'm buying myself a Macbook Pro to run video lectures easier and to make me feel happy.

Funkypolar · 23/11/2020 11:48

My mask lives in my coat pocket. I think I’ve had the same one for a month.

AcornAutumn · 23/11/2020 12:08

Yes, it is colder as in there was frost at 6am

But it was quite nice when I went out and I say that as someone who really feels the cold. I didn’t need my hat and I normally wear a woolly hat in winter. I think it’s about 10 degrees.

Iheartmysmart · 23/11/2020 12:09

@DominaShantotto I feel exactly the same today, flat, fed up and bloody lonely. Not helped by the company suggestion of a virtual Christmas party! I sit all day on my own in front of a fucking screen and have no desire to spend my evening the same way! Oh and I’m sick of colleagues asking me to do things they could easily do themselves but they can’t be bothered! Rant over.

I'm so demotivated I'm still in my pyjamas Blush

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/11/2020 12:12

I've just given in and bought yet more masks - washing and drying the school ones every day is getting bothersome and two of them have got attached to particular masks and the drama is they can't find them Hmm.

@thenightsky I e just got up. Can’t really see the point when nothing to do
justasking111 · 23/11/2020 12:40

Well my ibs is teetering on the edge now. Think it is a problem created by gall bladder removal a few years ago. So gp gave me some pills for the spasms 10 days ago. Been on omeprazole for years so cut down to one and on Wednesday went cold turkey. interesting side affect of this is my stomach is exploding with acid. Gaviscon by the bed. Maalox on hand. It is the only way I can think to pin it down. I am losing weight though on a super restricted diet. Staying in is not hard at the moment with the need for loos.

justasking111 · 23/11/2020 12:45

Just spoke to computer doctor my lappy six years old is poorly. He said cannot see you track and trace has nabbed me. His wife is a nurse in our hospital board. He says the hospital board see and process figures when they turn up on public health wales they are always different to the figures they sent. How odd is that. He said it is a guesstimate that we the public see because they add in figures when they were missed the day before. Oh joy.

I think that is why xmas decs. are popping up everywhere. Do it during lockdown
Sonicthehedgehogg · 23/11/2020 12:48

Thanks for responses - I've already had my flu jab and the nurses said they're on an extra push to get them done so they can be ready to do the Covid ones next. Got my lollipop, and most importantly a sticker... which now covers my horrendous picture on my ID badge. They can't take your picture normally so are using a camera on the back of the computer through a screen. The pic was taken without warning and from a foot below my face... it's so bad my team couldn't stop crying with laughter for ten minutes Grin

justasking111 · 23/11/2020 12:55

OH visited the dentist last week, he said the dental association had been asked to carry out covid jabs in Wales. So who knows your dentist could be jabbing you.

Orangeblossom7777 · 23/11/2020 12:56

I got up, showered and have been back to bed. Feeling a but run down to be fair

I noticed another positive thing along with the re-opening and vaccine news though. They're planning on not doing the self isolating thing anymore, replacing it with a series of those quick tests (possibly to self test?)

Wonder if that might apply to school DCs too, with only 1 in 60 (or 70) being positive that might be a real help.

Already posted on re-opening in you know where and got negative comments about cases rising and people not liking their jobs and having to go back. Oh dear.
