Another thousand posts filled and we're ploughing on through another weekend of squelching through parks before we hit the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul.

Of course there is a puritanical patronising anti drinking thing going on. After all, none of us can possibly make good choices anymore. Big Brothers will do it for us.

But Majestic was allowed to remain open as an essential service. Conflicting messages, not.

Yes it was Claire Fox. I don't think I would have ever (nor will) agree with any of her other views, but she challenged the rhetoric that the others gave quite articulately.

bluetongue · 27/11/2020 07:45

Masks where I live are being ‘encouraged’ but for now I can’t bring myself to wear one.

For context I’m in Adelaide, Australia where there are 22 active cases in a city of over a million, most in quarantine or isolating at home. It was also 40 degrees today. I saw people wearing them outside and I just don’t get it. In all honestly you’re in much more danger from the heat than Covid here right now and I would think a mask would make things worse.

I found a couple of people at work that agreed that the short lived lockdown we had here last week was way over the top. We were basically on home detention apart from grocery shopping once a day. We couldn’t even take the dog for a walk around the block! The government did a 180 on the lockdown after just a few days. Supposedly it was because one of the people they interviewed gave them incorrect information but I think they might have also realised. they’d gone a step too far. It was actually terrifying how easily people accepted being locked in their house.

ISaySteadyOn · 27/11/2020 07:47

@DrDiva, you're absolutely right. I forgot that. Good point.

Iheartmysmart · 27/11/2020 08:03

Ooh well I fell asleep again and am now running later for my 8am teams call and can’t get Livin’s comment out of my head! It’s with my boss so wish me luck.

Just been called a 'twat' for considering going to visit Dad at Christmas. But try and avoid abuse from the corona zone today. It is not good for the soul.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/11/2020 08:33

I really do not like zoom, friend is even doing yoga as a group on it and a meditation retreat! I would find that stressful rather than relaxing, she says 'you can interact over it' No thanks. The retreat sounds interesting though must ask her about it.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/11/2020 08:36

On the tears business I think they look at things such as hospitals nearby, rates in over 60s, rising or falling, etc there was some stuff on it online. We have had high rates in Bath but given Tier 2. It's a bit odd, all around us (Bristol, South Glos, North Somerset is 3, but some of those are more rural)

I can see Bath being very busy up to and including Christmas and getting moved up perhaps. Even though no Christmas market (one blessing I suppose)

TabbyStar · 27/11/2020 08:37

Or maybe because one town in the county has higher than the others (but still falling now), but that is 80 odd miles away from us?

This is why we're stuck in tier 3. No idea what prompted the change from district-based to county-based tiers. Though part of our district is high because of proximity to the city, though it's mainly a large rural district, we're on the edge and I can see tier 2 out of the window! I really hope the MPs rebel, but as there are so many people seemingly supporting it I don't hold out a huge amount of hope.

MissEWeatherwax · 27/11/2020 09:01

My local MP has stated on Facebook that he is voting against putting us in tier 3. He’s getting good engagement and feedback. I think it shows him in a good light.Still seem to have a problem with care homes, it can’t be visiting. So where’s it coming from?
On the hugging a granny, my DDad is annoyed they never mention Grandad’sGrin.
By reading the covid threads I realise I’m not as antisocial as I thought. I really miss my sad little life and very little social life.
We are going to buy some party food for Saturday and watch some Christmas movies, to try and cheer us up.

MissEWeatherwax · 27/11/2020 09:02

@DominaShantotto good luck with dealing with school.

@AcornAutumn
This was why I said playing around with different statistics - so they could get the areas they want (mainly London) into the lower tier. I totally agree it makes little difference on a personal level but for small businesses - and hospitality particularly the difference is huge.

NannyGythaOgg · 27/11/2020 09:12

Plus - it's easier to go from 2 to 1, than from 3 to 1. From 3, 1 seems a long long way away

rosettesforjill · 27/11/2020 09:16

To be fair to London, I think most boroughs are pretty squarely in Tier 2 figures (ours certainly is). But there are areas with similar or lower figures which have been put into Tier 3 (e.g. Ashford, where our now cancelled Santa visit was supposed to be, and Trafford), which must be so frustrating.

Iheartmysmart · 27/11/2020 09:22

Hasn’t Whitty said that Tier 2 is as good as it gets and there won’t be any escape from it? I hope that isn’t the case but I really don’t trust our government at the moment.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/11/2020 09:47

Thing is though 2 will be a problem for hospitality as well as people are only meant to go out in a household group? Although how would they police that. I can't see it working here in Bath. We'll see...all very busy here before this lockdown with he tourists buses, tour groups (albeit small ones) filming, crowds (sorry sound but dementory) and the 2 universities.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/11/2020 09:48

Last night at the briefing they said 2 levels the numbers and 3 decreases them, whereas with 1 they tend to rise. That was the basic gist of it.

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/11/2020 10:01

Labour has refused to reveal whether it supports the new Covid tiers as a Tory rebellion builds.

Sir Keir Starmer will decide early next week if his party will support the Government's plans.

With up to 70 Tory MPs threatening to rebel over the new restrictions Labour's support will be crucial for Mr Johnson if he hopes the restrictions to pass on Tuesday.

From the Tory shires to "Red Wall" seats, a full-blown rebellion appears to be growing with many citing accusations of "unfairness" and "inconsistency".

Goodness.

So does that mean no indoor household mixing until Easter? I can't cope with that.
LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/11/2020 10:40

Just read that old Bojo apparently said last night "Your tier is not your destiny"

For fucks sake, he no longer thinks he's Churchill, he thinks he's fucking Obe wan Kenobi
