Is @ mentioning someone on a thread now not the done thing?

Noticed people being “told off” for @ mentioning other posters on threads.
I’ve been on MN for probably ten years and never noticed anyone complaining but seen it twice today.

Was it never the done thing? Is this a new issue? Do we not mention who we reply to anymore?

If you're using the mobile version on MN, typing @ brings up a list of people on the thread so you can autocomplete rather than try and remember someone's name. It's just a lot easier.

Only some names seem to be able to be clicked on that way. Others I have to type out in full. Any idea why? @MNHQ maybe you know?

@ShirleyPhallus

Hilarious responses as usual from posters who can’t manage their own notifications or work their phones sufficiently and instead blame the other users of the site.

Assume these are the same people who are unable to turn their phone to silent overnight so complain about people texting them at night too.

Maybe MN should do a guest post called “notifications for dummies”’or something

I do know how to turn notifications on and off, but I think it’s useful to get notifications of slightly more important stuff where people really want to draw your attention to something - and that doesn’t work if people use @s for all replies.

It’s a losing battle I suspect, but I think that @ing to get someone’s attention and bolding or quoting for general back and forth is a preferable system

I agree with the poster who wished that quotes could be trimmed down btw.

Also on the tablet app. I sometimes use it and then edit off the @ , peachgreen Grin

It usually happens to me when someone is being passive aggressive and they know it. If I ask them not to @ and they make a point of carrying on then it's a pain in the arse.

All my MN emails go to an account I never check so meh!

PleasantVille · 18/11/2020 11:31

@timeforanewstart

You get emails about every post when someone comments and if your using the site you are aware of the at function so if you don't like it surely you don't use it
You only get emails if you haven't turned them off, I'm guessing most people don't get them as it's really annoying imo

Me too LittleBearPad there is no way I'd sign up to mumsnet with my main account.
