Is @ mentioning someone on a thread now not the done thing?

Jinglebellissimo · 17/11/2020 20:36

Noticed people being “told off” for @ mentioning other posters on threads.
I’ve been on MN for probably ten years and never noticed anyone complaining but seen it twice today.

Was it never the done thing? Is this a new issue? Do we not mention who we reply to anymore?

Yes, I'm doing it right now.Grin pull the arrow on the right hand side of the post, it's an option along with report etc.

@icelollycraving

Sorry I'm just testing this . Didn't know it existed! Love it! I'm gonna use the hell out of itGrin

cariadlet · 18/11/2020 06:11

I really appreciate that @tobee 😁

GCAcademic · 18/11/2020 06:27

It makes me cringe when I see people @ ing someone but shortening their name. Potentially someone else entirely will be getting that email notification. I don't understand why they do it either, given that a list of names on the thread comes up automatically when you type the @ symbol.

TheRogueApostrophe · 18/11/2020 06:52

As a reader of a thread @ ing (or not @ ing but just responding to someone by name) irritates me sometimes because I can't always remember what that person said, so the thread can start to make less sense. I prefer it when posters either quote the post they're referring to or copy and paste a few lines of it. I've had a few emails as a result of an @ but I've turned off email notifications on my phone anyway. My phone only alerts me if I get a WhatsApp or SMS.

eaglejulesk · 18/11/2020 07:13

Surely you can turn off the notifications? I never get any if someone @ me.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 18/11/2020 07:24

Just bold it.
No one needs endless notifications.
Also now the Quote function is in place just use that.
I find constant @ - ing quite rude. But not quite sure why.

WitchesSpelleas · 18/11/2020 07:29

Some people feel it shouldn't be used if the other poster is obviously active on a thread, but it's OK to use it if their last post was hours ago.

Personally I think posters should switch off their notifications rather than tell other posters off for using it.

User43210 · 18/11/2020 07:51

I often wonder why people just hold names. Sometimes a thread explodes and it's hard to see if someone replied to you.

I turned off all notifications except the @ function so that if someone wants to reply to me, I get an email and know about this. Surely it's easier for people to just remove this notification if they don't want it?

PleasantVille · 18/11/2020 08:46

That's just odd, do they assume that if someone has made one post on a thread that they the stay on that thread watching all the replies?

Or maybe I'm the odd one out, am I doing it wrong, I post on a thread then might check back on TIO but I don't stay around watching replies in real time.

Bluntness100 · 18/11/2020 08:51

Because it emails the person. You might think your reply is important but not enough to have it emailed to them, if they wish to come back to the thread they will. I think it’s an awful thing to be honest.

If I want to go back to a thread I will, if I want to read someone’s response I will. I do not wish to be emailed about it...

Jinglebellissimo · 18/11/2020 08:56

I dont think anyone uses it thinking “oh that will email them”. How would you know what notifications someone has set up?

Until this thread I wasn’t actually even aware that it does email so certainly haven’t been using it in that way.

If you don't want an email then turn it off in settings, I am sad and have been in lockdown for way too long like getting @ed, it makes me feel special!

Jinglebellissimo · 18/11/2020 08:57

@Pinkywoo there you go Grin

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 18/11/2020 08:59

Mamette

Surely this @ thing only started a year or two ago? Confused Before that you just bolded people’s usernames. I still do that I think.

That's what I thought. The @ is still a new feature in my mind. I use a mixture of the old bold names and italic a quote, @ and the quote function depending on how lazy I am Grin

TeenPlusTwenties · 18/11/2020 09:01

I only @ mention people who are not on the thread as a way to draw their attention to it. (For me this means school admissions threads and maths threads.)

I don't see the point in @ mentioning people who are already there. They can read their own name perfectly well when you just bold it.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/11/2020 09:09

Hilarious responses as usual from posters who can’t manage their own notifications or work their phones sufficiently and instead blame the other users of the site.

Assume these are the same people who are unable to turn their phone to silent overnight so complain about people texting them at night too.

Maybe MN should do a guest post called “notifications for dummies”’or something

NameChange84 · 18/11/2020 09:17

Years ago, under a different username, I had a total douchebag poster say “FFS STOP @ ing me!!!!!!!!!!!”

I never realised it was a contentious issue until then.

However my MN email account is linked to my spammy/marketing email account that I never actually check! I can see how the emails would be annoying but I’d just Mark as spam and never check. As if you WOULDN’T do that and would have your personal email account linked to MN and on your phone etc Confused?!

It does help to be able to @ certain people and avoid confusion IMO. But not if it makes people’s phones ping every second lol.

timeforanewstart · 18/11/2020 09:29

You get emails about every post when someone comments and if your using the site you are aware of the at function so if you don't like it surely you don't use it

Sparklingbrook · 18/11/2020 09:29

You can @ me as much as you like but I have it turned off so I’ll never know.

myhobbyisouting · 18/11/2020 09:39

Mine go into junk anyway
