My mum is really angry about her Christmas card

I sent mine out early this year (I know, I know). My mum got hers today, earlier than expected since I sent them 2nd Class.

She doesn’t often answer her phone but she did today, I rang for a quick chat. She said ‘I got your card, thanks’. She sounded really disappointed (she’s either a really thrilled, happy as a button person or is really down in the dumps and snappy). I said is everything okay, she said ‘well it wasn’t a nice card, was it?’

It was part of a multipack, granted Blush But I thought there were really sweet, with a snowman and red car with a tree on top. I said that I thought she’d like it, they’re just a little gesture. She said ‘Yeah well thanks’.

She then said ‘got to go, really busy, I’ll call you later’. She never does call later though.

Was I really CF for sending a multipack card? Can that be offensive if the person is an important person in your life? I just wanted to do something nice, to let people know they were in my thoughts.

I’m really hurt by this. I know I need to get a grip and I’m probably the silly one for thinking a cheap little card would be well received when people will probably bin it when they get them Sad

Next year, send her a card with this on.

My mum is really angry about her Christmas card

Call her bluff and just don't get in touch or mention the card. She's childish.

Whenwillow · 15/11/2020 17:08

I'm always astonished when I read on here what people get offended about.
It might be why my ex in-laws didn't like me, now I think about it.
My mum gets a multi pack card, but I do try and pick a picture she'll like. She knows I love her, she doesn't sentimental card to prove it!
3/4 of my grown up children give me a card. The other never does, but he just doesn't go in for that sort of thing and it's never worried me in the least.
Someone who sulks about a card can fuck the fuck off and wouldn't be getting one again 😂
But sending cards in November did amuse me!

I always send card form multipacks. I choose very nice ones- looking great mostly from paperchase p, so they look different and not cheap.
I remember once my MiL frowned on the card.
She always sends these large individual cards.
I can afford to buy £3 per individual card sadly.
She can.

YellowPostItPad · 15/11/2020 17:09

I never send mum, dad, niece etc cards. It's multi packs from me to everyone. Never occurred to me to do otherwise.

To be honest I find not many people actually send cards at all anymore. It's all posting amusing quotes on Facebook about not being bothered and having a glass of wine instead.

Hiddennameforever · 15/11/2020 17:09

#i meant to say I can NOT afford to pay £3 per individual card sadly.

@PickAChew

Next year, send her a card with this on.

I’m puzzled by the class thing. Those of you who think this, please tell me: which class does what?

scentedgeranium · 15/11/2020 17:11

Try not to beat yourself up. My mother (and father!) once had a sulk bc I sent pink flowers. She preferred BLUE! How could you!!!
I swear I'm the lowest maintenance mother as a result of this and other mysterious transgressions

thanksgivingchi · 15/11/2020 17:12

I haven't sent cards for years, some people in the family do and some don't.
I certainly wouldn't send one again to someone who behaved like your DM.

catfeets · 15/11/2020 17:13

My mum is like this and has been since I was a child. She never gave us money yet somehow expected us to buy her presents and cards. A relative gave me money to buy a birthday card after listening to her complaining about not receiving one from me. I was 7 Hmm. The local shop had only standard cards, nothing at all that said mum.
I gave her the card and she hit the roof once the relative left. Shouting about how I must hate her and think nothing of her to get her a card as shit as that. The fact that it didn't say mum on it was unthinkable for her.
I haven't dared buy her one without the word mum on it since but stick to as little verse as possible. She on the other hand buys those awful cheap cards with ridiculous verses in them.
My mum would have definitely reacted like yours at a card like the one you sent. But it wouldn't be you that's BU in my opinion.

goingtotown · 15/11/2020 17:14

I’d be more upset about receiving a Christmas card in mid November. Would think the sender just wanted to tick another job off their list.

andannabegins · 15/11/2020 17:15

My mil once completely lost her shit because the birthday card we sent wasn't good enough. It was a very pleasant card with cupcakes on. She was being ridiculous, I hated that woman, I'm glad she and her toxic negativity are gone

Topseyt · 15/11/2020 17:15

@YellowPostItPad, I think it is a picture of a grip. So saying tell her to get a grip!

FourTeaFallOut · 15/11/2020 17:16

It's a grip @yellowpostitpad. I spent a while wondering why the op's mum would need an electric nit comb.

Whenwillow · 15/11/2020 17:18

Lol life is way too short to get upset about an early card goingtotown
Amused possibly, but not upset 🙄

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2020 17:20

I guess if you buy a classy birthday card with a Monet picture on the front your ' lower middle class' and glittery card factory ' to the best whoever' on it is ' working class' ? Who knows or cares? ( some people do though) very rich people have them made and printed individually I suppose.
At least padded cards in big boxes with a bear and a heart died a death a while ago.
They were a strange thing!

feministbias · 15/11/2020 17:20

We have family like this.
Expect a personalised card - one with lovely auntie, greatest uncle etc.
Expect a thank you for the card

Weird
It's another way of demanding time from you.

Babyroobs · 15/11/2020 17:21

Same here. They just clutter the place up as far as I'm concerned and I'd be annoyed at having to find room for it for 6 weeks !!
jambeforeclottedcream · 15/11/2020 17:22

Yanbu
I rarely get my parents Christmas cards multipack or otherwise

RuffleCrow · 15/11/2020 17:23

Is this about the card or her attitude more generally?

InFiveMins · 15/11/2020 17:23

You were thoughtful enough to get her a card at all.

She's selfish and trying to hurt you when she should be grateful to receive anything. It's the thought that counts, multipack card or not.

I would make it clear to her she really hurt your feelings and that in future you won't get her a card if she will be so rude about receiving it.

Quizeerascal · 15/11/2020 17:24

First world problem

Callcat · 15/11/2020 17:27

The world is fucking nuts. That is all.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/11/2020 17:28

@ChooseYourLameName

I'm sorry your Mum has upset you.

My mum always sends cards early. I'm most surprised I haven't got hers yet!! Most years I'm a bit 'it's Nov ffs' but this year I'm all for Christmas a bit early! So I wouldn't worry about sending them 'early'. (Despite the MN grinches)

As fir the card out if a box. Our family is very much 'individual specific' cards, I'm not sure, but it might be more of a 'northern' thing. I always buy specific cards for family & good friends & nice 'pack' cards for more distant friends & neighbours etc.

However, I know on MN that's seen as 'chavvy' or whatever. Personally I don't think your mum is BU to be a bit upset about it, but she's being horrible making an issue of it. Especially when you don't even normally send cards!!

Maybe she's just feeling a bit down/lonely and taken it to heart?!

My mum would be incredibly upset if I sent her a 'box card' but she'd find something nice to say about it. And I know she spends a lot of time finding a lovely card for me.
