Its a bit played down to what they have produced in the past.

JL ad was fairly underwhelming this year. I feel like avoided the whole virus as a topic and it's a shame. They could have done something more reflective of what everyone has been through. They chickened out.

The different animation styles one?

It was ok. I only like the last part with the girl in fixed glasses and the tag line
Otherwise it felt too patchy and disparate

The McDonalds one left me completely cold. Didn’t really like it at all

Just scrolled back I was thinking of something else. The inner child McDs is better than the one I was thinking of. Not favourite though.

I just watched and you are all right Aldi and McDonald’s have taken the crown

Considering most JL stores are currently closed due to the lockdown they must be only too aware of the virus and what their staff are going through... I think it's good to escape from it for a bit.

Nothing beats the Supervalu one, I cried in the car when I first saw it. It hits the spot exactly.

Just watching it again, and I have leaky eyes again!

@Margaritawithlime

Feel the same OP. It’s ok... but I feel there’s been a missed opportunity. I’d be interested to see how much it cost. Ironic to spend ££££ and then ask us to give a little.
Would rather have seen a black screen, white words ‘this year has been different’ sort of thing. Lovely song like this year in the background.
And ‘we have donated the cost of our advert to these charities’
Or even reinvested in the workers and not cut so many jobs!
Perhaps I’m being a total cynic,
Prefer aldi this year I think!

This would have been much better.

I don't understand the McDonalds one. Blush Is there a back story as to why the child is so unhappy?

Okay I'm leaving this thread now because I just watched the Coca cola advert and now I'm a mess!

@Sparklingbrook I saw it as a child is a moody teenager, too cool for daft Christmas fun.

Oh is that it? I thought I was missing something. Like what happened to Dad? It seemed to end but nothing happened.

I'm not a great fan of any Christmas ads. They all tend to be very emotionally manipulative and hypocritical, given the fact that their main concern is persuading us to spend money we probably can't afford on things we almost certainly don't need and, in some cases, don't even want.
(Bah, humbug!)

I shared it with my work colleagues today and a few of them were emotional after watching. It really sums up the way many are feeling right now. Lonely and missing family / friends, and how the simple gesture of someone being allowed to visit is all many would like this year.

I think that's why it doesn't "grab" me tbh-I can't really see the need for any great upset about that!

Love the Supervalu one though.

Reminds me of when my Dad used to stay with us.

So relieved I am not the only one. Ghastly song. I had a job to sit through it.
My friend posted the comments on the Waitrose site and they are all overwhelmingly positive.

Aw the Supervalu one is so cute, it made me fell all warm inside. I'm not in Ireland so I'm glad you pointed it out to me.

I think the McDonalds one just reminded me of when DS was a moody teenager who didn't want to get involved in the Christmas fun and how difficult that could be.

I think it's great they used the opportunities to support very worthwhile charities, that's a fresh take on an advert.

Maybe I'm a hard hearted bugger, but I can't imagine ever crying at an advert, that's something I read on here I'll never get. How the he'll do some of you manage when real life difficult events happen??
