Just posted on a vaccine thread about whether nhs staff would have the vaccine but didn’t get much response to my question.
I’m admin but patient facing and I’m not sure if I’ll have it. I understood that the vaccine doesn’t stop you getting the virus but that if you do the symptoms could be less severe but does it stop you spreading it? And what difference would it make to isolating etc?
The consensus on there is that it’s a no brainer but I’m sceptical.

WouldBeGood · 22/11/2020 12:11

I will definitely get it as soon as I’m offered it.

I’m not at huge risk from Covid but I want to get out and about and it also benefits the vulnerable if everyone gets the vaccine.

I’ve given it a lot of thought and read about it and am quite happy to take it.

I don’t support mandatory vaccination but I really hope take up is good.

DrDiva · 22/11/2020 12:23

The local garden centre has a sign saying “due to COVID 19 please do not climb in the exhibits.” Which are animal figures.

Yes, because any other year you’d be happy with everyone clambering over them, or even putting their sticky paws on them. WHY IS EVERYTHING DOE TO BLOODY COVID??

Argh. I may have ranted at DH a bit Blush

WouldBeGood · 22/11/2020 12:34

Sometimes I want to change the “due to Covid” signs to “due to senseless rules”

My friend has a senior backroom position and is involved in making the vaccine happen withing her organisation. They're vaccinating highest risk Covid staff first, through to lower risk admin. There is still a risk of exposure through the organisation so all staff will be covered.

I always felt like that "due to health and safety". More that it was such a cliché. Sometimes a change of phrasing to something like hygiene scans better. But mostly that if it's reasonable, it doesn't need backing up with a cliché.

@AcornAutumn

I want businesses to survive

But is anyone else in my boat - can’t go to pub or restaurant due to risk of T&T and two weeks isolating?

Yep, same here. When the restrictions were loosened last time I didn't go to pubs or cafes etc as I don't want the risk like you. I do a lot for others, as in getting shopping for my mil, plus an elderly neighbour, I look after my grandchildren all day one day a week so my daughter and son in law can work (both key workers, as am I). I worry about what will happen to those plans if I'm told to isolate. I'm not being a martyr and thinking no one else can do these things for them, as if I was dead they'd have to find solutions! ( that's not a morbid thought, mind, I've always said to people no one is indispensable, if you dropped down dead they can't get you up and work you with strings!). I'm just trying to do the best I can with social distancing etc., but I've worked all through in a supermarket, without any ppe and screens and gloves at the start of it and so far I'm ok, touch wood. I've got an hospital appointment soon which has been outstanding for months, won't necessarily sort out my issue but it's halfway there. I don't want to miss that. I have no objection to anyone going to cafes and pubs, each to their own, but the hysterical attitude of some people makes me wonder about them.
Aztectrousers · 22/11/2020 12:42

I need to know a bit more about it before I decide but I’m definitely in favour of the vulnerable having it if they choose to do so.
Don’t want to feel pressurised though.

Just catching up. Best wishes for you @110APiccadilly

Flowers @Reedwarbler So sorry you and your husband are going through this. Had somewhat similar situation with my grandmother a few years ago. Had to fight some unexpected battles with people who were supposed to be on her side. You discover your core of steel at times like this, but also despair that you should even have to. The processes at times seem inhuman.

110APiccadilly · 22/11/2020 13:01

Notices with strange reasoning... one of the rail companies has (or had) an announcement something like this: "Please be aware that CCTV cameras are installed in this carriage for your comfort and security."

Security, yes, that makes sense. I fail to see how a CCTV camera will make me more comfortable!

Reedwarbler · 22/11/2020 13:06

I really think it's a big mistake banning certain (or is it all?) outdoor sports. I mean, tennis - people standing metres and metres away from each other. I waliked past our local tennis club this morning, it just seems so senseless for it to be shut up. And riding. This is a very horsy area and I saw two groups out hacking together this morning, but riding schools can't give lessons. Believe you me, you can't get too close to anyone else on a horse in the general scheme of things, unless you want a possible kicking match. And it's out in the fresh air for heavens sake. What is the logic behind banning healthy activity?
Just had a look at the figures for our council area and the death rate (92) is the same as it was in August. So no one has died of covid for ages. Cases are dropping too week by week.
Nothing makes sense to me anymore. I feel like Alice and her looking glass.

AcornAutumn · 22/11/2020 13:08
@AcornAutumn that sounds horrible, the vertigo.

I guess I don’t cope well with being cooped up- went proper mental in the last lockdown and still in bed on day two of this one.

Getting out and about is really important to me and I’m confident I’ve been I’ve never been in two metre contact with anyone for fifteen minutes. You wouldn’t need to isolate if a waiter or waitress tested positive.
That’s the problem though

If T&T call and say you have to, that’s the law, you could get a massive great fine if you don’t.

If a waiter tests positive, I bet the restaurant would pass on details of every diner on that shift.

Also, less than 1meter seems to have a 1 minute rule on the government website.

NastyBlouse · 22/11/2020 13:08

On meaningless wording... I enjoy a casually deployed ‘for your convenience’ which actually means ‘for our increased profitability’. Hotels are especial bastards for this one.

I suppose they mean you’re less likely to be flashed at.

How’s that baby coming along?

NastyBlouse · 22/11/2020 13:10

Or ‘dear valued customer’ which is how my energy company chooses to address me, despite knowing my name and having £200 off me a month.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/11/2020 13:14

8 posts left... we need a new name pronto.

ADs and The Fairy Tale of New York?
Any other offers?

@AcornAutumn I suppose I'd think being flashed at fell under security rather than comfort, but fair enough!

Baby... is not being highly cooperative! Have had first stage of induction, and am now getting period-type pains, which is good, but I'd be amazed if they don't have to move to the second phase and put me on a (oxytocin?) drip. But as long as we're both ok in the end, that's what counts (though I'd really like to avoid a C-section if at all possible.)

Poor DH is stuck at home which I think is probably worse for him than me at the moment.

How would an immunity passport work? Would you produce one to go into a restaurant? To attend a party? Obviously no one will actually ask for it. To fly abroad, perhaps.
Ridiculous.

As is this idea of this “freedom pass” I’ve just read about. Apparently if you’re tested regularly and negative you will get a freedom pass which will allow you to do things like meet friends and family without masks and social distancing.

First of all, the focus should be on the vaccine not about mass testing anymore. I’d hoped this “moonshot” idea was dead and buried now we know the vaccine will be available. The effort and money to come up with this “freedom pass” exercise seems ridiculous.

Secondly, who wears masks and social distances with friends and family anyway? Do people seriously do this? Are people wearing masks when they visit other people? (Outside of actual lockdown I mean).

The article said that if you are walking down the street without a mask and you get challenged you can produce your “freedom pass” .. but we don’t have to wear masks for walking down the road anyway? Most people round here are still maskless until they enter a shop.

AcornAutumn · 22/11/2020 13:43

Zig - this was all discussed at the Conservative party conference. They’re deadly serious.

A vaccine that might make your symptoms mild enough to miss but still potentially be contagious is a big fail. Gut instinct is I don't feel enough at risk from covid to protect myself yet leave those around me at risk.
