To be mortified by this

Dd has free school meals. She's off school (half term has finished here) because she was in contact with a teacher who has tested positive but because she sits at the back of the classroom she was more than 2m away so doesn't have to self isolate but they are being taught by zoom lessons as precaution.

We have just had a letter through the door with a voucher to cover the cost of her lunches for the week. I am so embarrassed that the school felt it necessary to come and hand deliver it to us. At least they didn't knock on the door!

Don’t be embarrassed, ignore the horrible comments , there are lots of horrible rude people on mumsnet, sitting behind their computers like cowards being cruel to people. xx

buggeroffvirus · 28/10/2020 19:59

You should be grateful, a lot of families would be. If you are so well off why do you not donate food to hungry families from your high horse.

Frestba · 28/10/2020 20:00

I get what you're saying. I think a lot of us are one job or one relationship away from needing them. It would be better if they came more anonymously.

Don't get free school meals then if you find it so embarrassing. Let them save the money for children who actually need it and will be grateful.

TartanLassie · 28/10/2020 20:00

Totally understand why you're embarrassed. I have never claimed FSM for my kids. Don't think less of people who do, just something I won't/can't do.

So yes I'd be mortified if I had them delivered through my letterbox.

But that's my problem. I think it's great they're available, and what a wonderful school actually going out and delivering them.

But yes I can understand your discomfort.

No, not seriously. It's a joke around here , now and again. Not very often apparently 😃

Although I do have a rough mental list of usernames that I think are particular wankers. I can't remember what I went into the next room for but have little problem remembering who to avoid. Grin

MudSmudge · 28/10/2020 20:01
@MudSmudge reread my post. I said help someone feels they shouldn't need not doesn't need
Eh?

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 20:02

Seriously, no one is querying the need for free school meal, people are rightly shocked that the scheme being maintained AS IT SHOULD when kids cannot attend school is being attacked!

That's what's disgusting, and so are the comments accusing others to be "trolls" for questioning the outraged.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/10/2020 20:02

@TartanLassie you should claim if you're entitled to. The school receive extra funding for all children who are entitled to fsm. (The income based one, not the universal KS1 meals)

Jessicabrassica · 28/10/2020 20:02

When we had a low income I was desperate to get the kids on fsm because it would generate additional income for the school for a number of years. We got just enough tax credits to tip us over the threshold.
At least supermarket vouchers are subtle at the till. Our local high school issued co-op cards for fsm families which worked well.

flaviaritt · 28/10/2020 20:03

Oh yes, the grateful poor. I wondered when they would be making an appearance on this thread.

Newmumatlast · 28/10/2020 20:03

@Pinkyandthebrainz

OP is embarrassed because they've assumed she'll be desperate and skint. Wonderful.
Is the point of fsm not that they are given to families who really need the help?
onedayinthefuture · 28/10/2020 20:03

God there's some nasty people on here. Posters who would wouldn't know what it's like to feel embarrassed in such circumstances because they have nice cushy lives, how dare you feel embarrassed at such goodwill. Get in your box OP and be grateful, nothing else you say or do will be good enough.

In real life however, many others will feel exactly like you do.

The circumstances are no different to free school meals on school premises.

I know! I know! Just can't do it!

Took all my pride to apply for grant for son's travel to college £1,500 a year.

By the way are you famous?

BritWifeinUSA · 28/10/2020 20:05

Send it back to them then if it’s such a problem for you to accept it. I’m sure someone else would be glad of it.

TartanLassie · 28/10/2020 20:06

Severe bold failure 🙄

Caroncanta · 28/10/2020 20:07

Do you think it's a prerequisite that the poor are suitably grateful then? I don't believe it is. It's assessed on need. A perceived suitable level of gratefulness is not required. Hope this helps.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 28/10/2020 20:07

Nope, because my name is a collection of inane words, some sweaty, not a nasty comment aimed at someone who has said they are feeling awful

Whathasthiscometo · 28/10/2020 20:07

I understand O.P.
I'm a teacher. Perhaps people would view it differently if their child's teacher started calling out the free school meals in the register. Its private information for a reason.
I really don't understand why you're getting a hard time.
Try not to feel embarrassed, its weird times at the moment. Like you said, at least it was put through the door.
I would ignore ridiculous comments on here.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/10/2020 20:08

Am I famous? I could tell you but I'd have to kill you Grin

WorraLiberty · 28/10/2020 20:08

The circumstances are no different to free school meals on school premises.

Well the circumstances feel different to the OP because someone's taken the time to come to her actual home and post vouchers through the door.

No need to feel embarrassed OP Thanks

And no need for some of the snarky comments on this thread Hmm

stackemhigh · 28/10/2020 20:09

Look at all the rich people taking up the free tube / train / bus pass, free £140 every year for gas bill. They’re not embarrassed, why should you be?

neonjumper · 28/10/2020 20:09

Please don't feel mortified .

We have to encourage our parents to take up their entitlement to FSM as some see it as a stigma.

During lockdown , we delivered meals as well as vouchers to all our eligible families ( and those that did not qualify but we were aware it would be appreciated ) .

Please don't be hard on yourself .

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 20:09

exactly.

At a push, it's dealt with in the privacy of your own home.

When you see how people are battling to try to get the free meals during isolation and school closures!
