To be mortified by this

Dd has free school meals. She's off school (half term has finished here) because she was in contact with a teacher who has tested positive but because she sits at the back of the classroom she was more than 2m away so doesn't have to self isolate but they are being taught by zoom lessons as precaution.

We have just had a letter through the door with a voucher to cover the cost of her lunches for the week. I am so embarrassed that the school felt it necessary to come and hand deliver it to us. At least they didn't knock on the door!

It’s not embarrassing to get free school meals. How rude.

Cassilis · 28/10/2020 18:38

Unless I have misunderstood why you are embarrassed?!

devildeepbluesea · 28/10/2020 18:38

Why is this mortifying? Personally I'd just be touched they thought of me and DD.

Oh yes how awful that they are trying to make sure the kids get fed...

Communities/businesses are realky pulling together to try and ensure that kids are getting food at a time that so many have list their jobs. I think its lovely

OP is embarrassed because they've assumed she'll be desperate and skint. Wonderful.

Cassilis · 28/10/2020 18:42

Are you embarrassed that they had to make the trip to you and you would have preferred to pop in yourself?

iklboogeymum · 28/10/2020 18:43

Seriously? Isn't that the point of the vouchers?

user183684257424 · 28/10/2020 18:43

Why is it embarrassing to have people care about your family?

BrumBoo · 28/10/2020 18:44

This is odd...

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/10/2020 18:44

They probably dropped them off to all the kids on fsm given they are at home and parents are off work looking after them.

Unless they spray painted "hobo" across the door i doubt there's been any judgement or assumptions about financial solvency

unmarkedbythat · 28/10/2020 18:45

Why are you embarrassed?

rachelvbwho · 28/10/2020 18:45

YABVU to come on a forum of parents to say that it is embarrassing to get free school meals and have people care about your children!

mortifiedmam · 28/10/2020 18:46

None of you get it, and why are you calling me an arsehole because I find it embarrassing that they did that? I don't think they judge me but it's embarrassing ok. You've made me feel worse about it now Sad

Honestly OP I’d be embarrassed too but this is standard procedure when your DC receive FSM and have an imposed isolation.

My DC have FCM and have both had imposed isolations because their bubble has had a confirmed case and the school did exactly the same with us.

triceratops12 · 28/10/2020 18:47

????

ghostyslovesheets · 28/10/2020 18:47

Baffling - they have covered the cost of her school dinner - why is this mortifying?

Sunnydaysstillhere · 28/10/2020 18:47

Be grateful! I get tax credits so no lunches and 5 x dc at home

.

maxineputyourredshoeson · 28/10/2020 18:48

*FSM

And I was embarrassed when the vouchers were delivered to us. But then that is my issue.

BrumBoo · 28/10/2020 18:48

@mortifiedmam, why are you mortified? What exactly is the backstory here? You're the only one who got them? You think you don't need them and worried youre being judges by the school? You are genuinely in need (like millions of families) yet have convinced yourself it's workhouse level of shame?
riotlady · 28/10/2020 18:48

No, I don’t get it, sorry. They just put it through the door, it’s not like they knocked and gave you a patronising speech about charity. They’ll have delivered them to everyone on fsm.

Glitterynails · 28/10/2020 18:49

@mortifiedmam I understand. I’m a teacher and I see lots of parents receiving FSM who feel embarrassed by it. They (and you) shouldn’t. But I understand.

The school is legally obliged to continue providing food/money support to children receiving FSM during periods of isolation. The school are not making a judgement about you and your family at all.

stackemhigh · 28/10/2020 18:49

Would you have preferred for everyone else in school to get the FSM voucher and leave you out?

The arsehole comment is OOO, you can report it, it will be deleted.

Meowza74 · 28/10/2020 18:49

Why is it embarrassing? Instead isn't it amazing that we're lucky enough to live somewhere that does this?
