Is your idea of hell being locked in a room with Gary Davis or Steve Wright?

I can not believe I’ve just turned the radio on to hear Zoe ball singing ooh Gary Davis Ooh Gary Davis. FFs I’m sure he was in Steve Wrights slot last week I thought I’d gone back to 1985. What is their appeal?????

I once heard them do a hand over to each other, they were doing it as 'Smashy and Nicey' a la Harry Enfield, the poor dears didn't have a clue.

I thought they had gone to wherever has beens who never were are put out to graze.

Blasphemy! I love Gary Davis!

I would hate to be stuck anywhere with Steve Wright - he annoys me intensely. Its just a pity he plays some decent music on his afternoon show! Would much prefer Gary Davies but have noticed that he's more 'shouty' when covering from SW than he is when covering for KB!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 28/10/2020 11:12

Could just about cope with Gary Davies
Steve Wright and I'd be begging for mercy

Sheeplife · 28/10/2020 11:16

I've never heard of them before, so I guess I'm living a blessed existence 😂

EachandEveryone · 28/10/2020 11:20

Where you not a teenager in the 80’s?

OP posts:
Iamthewombat · 28/10/2020 11:24

I was a teenager in the 1980s. I had zero interest in either of them. I used to wonder what was wrong with the people my age who liked that sort of thing because they were so uncool.

Anyway I think Steve Wright would be worse. As soon as he started to form the word ‘factoid’ I would have to punch him.

notonmytime · 28/10/2020 11:28

It is kind of comforting having these voices from childhood on the radio still.

I was surprised that they had dug up the 'ooo Gary Davis' jingle again though.

Radio 2 is full of former Radio 1 DJs - it's how it has been for ages (Zoe Ball, Jo Whiley etc). It seems to be an accepted career path.

One of the most popular Radio 2 DJs was Simon Mayo until the station foolishly messed with his show. He even brought with him his Confessions slot from Radio 1 - very funny indeed.

notonmytime · 28/10/2020 11:31

and it could be worse - they used to have the Red Dwarf guy stand in for Steve Wright a lot. I could not listen to that.

Apparently Scott Mills (also former R1) some times covers for him too. I would be more likely to listen to that.

Born in 88!

Steve Wright was always on in the car so Im thinking he mustve been on in the morning or school leaving time. Which is weird as I cant remember anyone dropping me off or picking me up from school🤔

We clearly have a very different idea of what constitutes funny. That confessions thing was about as funny as a burning orphanage. I’d change the station as soon as Simon Salad Cream (with acknowledgements to Viz) came on.

Sara Cox is miles better.

notonmytime · 28/10/2020 12:27

Just my opinion - you are entitled to yours also, but personally I can't listen to Sara Cox.

He was always on in the afternoon from what I remember.

Yes, I have happy memories of being collected from school early in the car for orthodontics appointments with Steve Wright playing on the radio (instead of the dreary bus ride).

Hailingfrequenciesopen · 28/10/2020 12:41

I'm lucky enough to have the radio on at work and it's normally Radio 2. IMO Steve Wright is getting more and more self indulgent and what's with the long periods of filler background music and him singing over songs. I've listened to Radio 2 for years and I am almost at the point of switching over. The only thing stopping me is the other stations and the relentless ads.

I may have to switch to Spotify, after pop master of course! Smile

PS - I loved Gary Davies filling in for Steve Wright. It was soooo much better!

Peachypips78 · 28/10/2020 12:59

Hate Steve Wright. Love songs show is even worse than the week day one. I find him so self-satisfied

I am amazed his producers haven't cracked down more on the singing over songs- he is doing this more and more.

EachandEveryone · 28/10/2020 13:27

I do like Absolute but theres only do much Oasis I can take.

I can't stand Sara Cox or Zoe Ball. Or Jeremy Vine.

It's a sad state of affairs when by default my favourite radio 2 DJs are now Ken Bruce and Steve Wright. I listen to Magic Radio a lot instead now.

Yes, those types of stations (Magic, Smooth etc) are getting increasingly played here also. A sad state of affairs.

I don't understand why Jeremy Vine is allowed to be so overtly right-wing and anti-public sector. I used to like his show but he has become emboldened (perhaps by the country voting in a right-wing Brexit party) in promoting these anti-public sector, almost public-sector-hating views.

At least on stations like LBC they have both left-wing and right-wing presenters so they balance each other out.

Fricking Gary Davies. I never liked Radio 1, even as a teen. And how he stands in for Ken Bruce and always fucks up on Popmaster. I'd be gutted if I applied to go on it and it was him presenting.

TurquoiseDragon · 28/10/2020 14:04

I didn't listen much to Radio 1, I tended to just play CDs instead back then.

Was much better when I could get Planet Rock, although I'm still looking for a decent metal radio show I can get in my area. It's not worth trying to find a station online, as the speakers on my laptop aren't brilliant.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 28/10/2020 14:07

Well, that's a challenging choice but it's actually Gary Davis! I haven't been able to listen to Radio 2 for weeks now Sad. Can't they find someone else to do the endless holiday covers? He is the most inane person I have ever heard on the radio and that is truly saying something!
