Is your idea of hell being locked in a room with Gary Davis or Steve Wright?

I can not believe I’ve just turned the radio on to hear Zoe ball singing ooh Gary Davis Ooh Gary Davis. FFs I’m sure he was in Steve Wrights slot last week I thought I’d gone back to 1985. What is their appeal?????

I'll take Gary Davies over Steve Wright any day of the week. I just can't bear all of the 'extras' with Steve. That being said, I'm in the US, so my afternoon listening is actually Sara Cox and Jo Whiley. I like Sara and Jo is back in her happy place. I still haven't forgiven R2 for effectively forcing out Simon Mayo.

I do quite like it when Scott Mills fills in (it's like Logan's run where older R1DJs are lined up for dispatching onward 😀) but I also love Liza Tarbuck who I know is a very acquired taste on here.

Felineflutter - just my opinion.
Do they get much say in the music choice? Sara Cox does seem to have a lot of old disco type music, which isn't really my taste. Plus JV has the 80's alternative stuff (is it like the Cure etc?).
I just tried Greatest Hits - so many adverts, bit like Smooth etc. More adverts than music.
Really I want something calm but uplifting, so am not keen on the louder DJs.

I do think the BBC's days are numbered. I used to listen to BBC radio or TV by default but now they are more like a last resort! I prefer stations like LBC or watching Netflix or Sky News and Amazon Prime.

notonmytime · 28/10/2020 18:21

Yes, I have LBC on a lot - even though, the constant news reel is bad for mental health and depressing at the moment. Quite addictive though.

jambeforeclottedcream · 28/10/2020 18:35

The only thing I don't like about Steve Wright is "serious jockin'" the theme tune goes straight through me

TheDogsMother · 28/10/2020 18:39

I love it when Gary Davis stands in for Steve Wright. He plays some decent music and more importantly, doesn't bloody sing over the tracks. I love it even more when Amol Rajan stands in for Zoe Ball.

RishiMcRichface · 28/10/2020 18:43

Yeah I used to be ok with Steve Wright a few years ago, but I caught his Serious Jockin' bit the other day and had to turn it off. I don't really like the music on R2 now either.

NorbertMeubles · 28/10/2020 18:44

Steve Wright must know some stuff about the BBC to still be in a job

iklboogeymum · 28/10/2020 18:45

Steve Wright, no question. I'd end up doing time.

wowfudge · 28/10/2020 19:06

I don't like Craig Charles at all. Love Sara Cox though. Warming to Jo Whiley though I've never been very keen.

AgeLikeWine · 28/10/2020 19:09

I always listen to Popmaster when Gary is sitting in for Ken. It’s guaranteed that there will be at least one car-crash during the week Grin.

In fairness to Gary, hosting a live pop quiz on national radio with two random members of the public, who are often extremely nervous on air may not be as easy as the master makes it sound.

Lalalatte · 28/10/2020 19:16

See what you did there @jambeforeclottedcream Ball, Willey and Cox Grin [childish emoticon]

I might be a middle aged Ken Bruce listener but I've remembered I quite like Rylan too.

Now, the show on a Sunday with Elaine Paige & the show tunes- why?!

I have 2 main issues with Elaine a Paige
  1. her giggle
  2. I like to think I know my show tunes. But I never know any of the songs she plays ever!
wowfudge · 28/10/2020 20:21

I always think Elaine is on the gin in the studio, scoffing rose and violet creams her fans send her.

EachandEveryone · 28/10/2020 21:03

What about Paul O Grady? I love him.

Simon Mayo is now on Scala Radio (classical), weekdays and Saturday. I love Scala but don't tend to listen to his show - too chatty and has people phoning in. I just want to hear music with a minimum of chat. Scala's music is good background music to listen to while working from home these days although they have more ads now than they used to.

user1471565182 · 28/10/2020 22:37

He was singing and talking all over a Helen Reddy song the day after she died the other week.

jambeforeclottedcream · 28/10/2020 22:48

I quite like that show before Sunday love songs with Kate from googlebox and Jason Mohammad

MrsAvocet · 28/10/2020 22:53

I had headphones unceremonially plonked on my ears by the radiographer when I had an MRI scan recently and to my horror had to listen to the Steve Wright show through the whole thing. Obviously I couldn't take them off and had to lie completely still. I did seriously consider pressing the emergency button at one point but I'd had to wait months for the appointment and didn't dare spoil the scan so I gritted my teeth to the end. It was definitely one of the most unpleasant hours of my life though - a particularly fiendish method of torture. I'm surprised M16 don't use it. Or maybe they do...Hmm

You are such a drama queen. Listen carefully. What I said was that Simon Mayo’s ‘Confessions’ thing was about as funny as a burning orphanage. That’s what we call a simile. And an opinion.

For the avoidance of doubt, whilst I think that anyone who actively enjoys listening to Simon Mayo has a very different idea of what is funny to mine, I do not believe that anyone who likes Simon Mayo’s show endorses the burning of babies.

Have we got that clear now?

Iamthewombat · 28/10/2020 23:00

Christ, is the dreaded reverend Kate Botley now occupying radio 2 on Sunday mornings? If I am driving anywhere at that time I will need to find alternative listening, because I can’t stand her.

SteeperThanHell · 28/10/2020 23:00

Sounds of the 80s with Gary Davies is bloody brilliant - not heard him standing in for Ken this week.

Craig Charles is dreadful though and has terrible taste in music - I gave up on Sara and Zoe years ago.
