(Socially distanced of course and in strictest obedience of all localised lockdowns and 3 or 5 tiers and whatever illogic the powers that be can dream up next)

The original digital discussion continues...

@CruCru
I think ignoring is the way to go.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/10/2020 11:05

References to the AD threads on other threads usually make me laugh because they are so far off the mark on what we actually discuss!

The word "Dementor" was latched on to in the first thread because it summed up the joy sucking attitude and layers of extra rules being imposed (bearing in mind it was the original lockdown so we're talking essential shopping from the supermarket, length of exercise, the clap and snitching on people checking up on vulnerable relatives). It's never been about quietly getting on with life which is what the majority of us do the majority of the time.

The strange thing at the time was that no dementory types latched onto the original AIBU, there was no bun-fighting, just exasperated people pulling together and shuffling off into Chat when we filled the first 1000 posts. One of the most peaceful AIBUs ever!

Someone having a different opinion to me does not a dementor make. It's that unnecessary puritan moralising that tips it. It's not about following a rule, it's about blindly imposing additional extras on to people. Expecting others to shut up and follow all rules, real or not with beautific reverence and gratitude and being astounded that others have the audacity to have fun and think about other things, including the big picture when we're in a global pandemic. Covid is the only issue. Thou shalt not concern thyself with petty worries like masks causing skin problems, nor larger concerns like childrens access to safeguarding or development services.

@LivinLaVidaLoki So it has, I just noticed.

TheOrchidKiller · 29/10/2020 11:10

I agree with the ignoring stance. It's tempting to try to argue your point back but I know they won't listen, so it's pointless. They seem to get bored & leave if no one responds.

Naturally, if anyone on here wants to argue back none of us are going to stop talking to you if you do.

ISaySteadyOn · 29/10/2020 11:21

I usually scroll past those posts anyway. I only read AD posts. So I agree, CruCru.

flower11 · 29/10/2020 11:30

@Theorchidkiller the cafe needs to shut because the nice owner making a living is not in cahoots with boris. Pubs can stay open because of his mate who owns spoons.
@reedwarbler I'm in the SW and it feels more real this time. My next door neighbour has covid, two teacher from dd school tested positive before half term. There are 3 cases at local college and an outbreak at local pub a few weeks ago.

dingit · 29/10/2020 11:57

I follow This Morning on Facebook. Judging by the comments about Dr Hilary the public hate him too.

NastyBlouse · 29/10/2020 12:11

And if I sit on another Teams meeting which ends “stay safe” I will scream!

A client of DH's starts Teams/Zoom meetings with a safesafesafe roll-call, @Iheartmysmart

"Have you been safe, Sandra? How about you Amir? Lucy, staying safe?" Until everyone has confirmed their respective safeness the business of the day cannot happen.

DH who is even more AD than me demurs with something non-committal like 'just taking things day-by-day'. Not that he wishes anyone unsafety, of course. It's just become one of those business bullshit performing-seal actions that gets thrown around without meaning.

mylittleyumyum · 29/10/2020 12:19

Been a while since I checked in. I've just had a look at the 'Masks for under 6' thread and I could cry. Only this week I made the decision to stop forcing my 9 year old to wear a mask on our infrequent visits to the shops as all she does is footer with it, sook it into her gob and pull it down.

It's definitely doing more harm than good, and I predict most kids are incapable of 'correct mask usage'. I'd have thought that to be the common consensus and I'm shocked to see I'm clearly in the minority.

Add to that someone frothing at people not wearing masks correctly - people weren't wearing them AT ALL before this 'second spike'.

My fitness watch says I'm stressed and I should take some breaths....

TheOrchidKiller · 29/10/2020 12:26

@Nastyblouse
The safety rollcall would kill me.

I feel very irritable today. I feel like I'm living in a passive-agressive flat-share, rather than a family home. We have spent too much time together, but also not enough time doing anything nice. We have few things to talk about because we have nowhere to go.

I feel quite resentful that we didn't get away in August due to work, & now even the tiny opportunities for doing nice things have been taken away.

MagdaS · 29/10/2020 12:32

@NastyBlouse I would eyeroll so hard if there was a ‘safe’ check in at the beginning of a meeting I suspect I’d spend the remainder of it looking into my brain. What a load of virtue signalling crap.

I suspect my answer ‘yes I’m keeping myself safe by going into the office pretty much every day and talking to people’ wouldn’t be the one they wanted.

We do have a morning WhatsApp check in for the team when we confirm we’re OK but that’s so we can make sure no one has fallen down the stairs in the night etc etc with many of us WFH and some living alone. No one has yet said, no not OK, I’ve got Covid. A number of people have been poorly with other things here and there, which given we are 8 months in is not surprising.

AcornAutumn · 29/10/2020 12:33

“ "Have you been safe, Sandra? How about you Amir? Lucy, staying safe?" Until everyone has confirmed their respective safeness the business of the day cannot happen.”

Oh. my.GOD. this would certainly send me over the edge.

IwishIwasyoda · 29/10/2020 12:40

@NastyBlouse

See that would bring out the worst in me - I would love to say ' yes I was staying safe under I got hammered last night and fell over the cat.'

Iheartmysmart · 29/10/2020 12:41

@NastyBlouse The company I work for is pretty obsessed with safety but even they haven’t gone that far yet! Do people think that “stay safe” is some kind of spell which keeps the nasty virus away?
I’ve agreed with my boss that any of our calls will end with “stay pissed” which is far more appropriate.

Yep, this is pretty much my definition of a dementor too.

And yes, I think people think that “Stay Safe!!!” is a magic spell (an irritating one) that stops anyone getting ill.

justasking111 · 29/10/2020 12:54

Posted elsewhere that student DS 2nd year had covid in March back at uni. all teaching online he only goes to supermarket so is isolating pretty much. One deranged poster said

"What the hell is he going to the supermarket for if he's in isolation, or are you ok that he's spreading this virus to others while in the supermarket, disgusting he should be staying in until he's clear not shopping."

The world has gone mad.

justasking111 · 29/10/2020 13:04

Oh if I had that safety roll call I would have to say, well I`ve been dogging in a car park but me and OH both wore masks as did the audience who were a metre from our car.

TheOrchidKiller · 29/10/2020 13:04

@justasking111
People don't read things properly. If they seek to be outraged they shall find.

Just burst into tears over DH about everything. This was slightly embarrassing because we were stood in our front window as the posrman came up the path with 2 parcels, which he then had to hand over to the deranged householders.

Needless to say one parcel has been opened & the other is awaiting the adressee's return home whilst sitting defiantly on the kitchen worktop.

Sorry Orchid did not understand that post. xx

TheOrchidKiller · 29/10/2020 13:24

@justasking111
I think I meant that some people want to feel outraged & indignant about rule-breakers - your DS clearly isn't breaking any rules. So they don't read posts properly & misinterpret things.

Sorry to be confusing. Not functioning straight today.

JamSarnie · 29/10/2020 13:27

It's ironic that a little bit of me dies inside whenever anyone says 'stay safe'. I am surprised I am still alive Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 29/10/2020 13:35

@JamSarnie
It's a wonder any of us are.

DominaShantotto · 29/10/2020 13:50

I love the emails that start with "I hope you are all well and staying safe" - I always want to reply with, "fuck, now you've said that I'll cancel my naked skydiving without a parachute I had scheduled for tomorrow"

Spent the morning in the hairdressers. I love my hairdressers. Not only has she now blinged up her visor - she's got fucked off and started blinging up the hand sanitiser bottle on the reception desk!

starfish88 · 29/10/2020 13:52

With regards to the government bots, surely the government have to have a clear, consistent message for the bots to put out before they do so?

Although knowing the current government, they would pay twice for D bots to tell everyone to lockdown forever and AD bots telling everyone to eat out to help out and the bots would just waste time and money fighting with each other no doubt!

justasking111 · 29/10/2020 13:52

They said today in London 100k a day are catching covid, someone did the math for them and said that means in 8 days every londoner will have it. Not being a statistician who can extrapolate data I tend to believe them.
