Social collapse imminent?

DP and I have just been listening to R4 PM, and the unfolding conflict surrounding tiered regional restrictions. DP reckons we are potentially 6 weeks away from some degree of escalating social collapse in the UK, and should take precautions to insulate ourselves from the impact.
Prudent or unnecessary?
What measures might those of you who may be thinking along the same lines be taking?

Um, no.

BillywilliamV · 16/10/2020 17:56

What’s he going to do?

PinkPlantCase · 16/10/2020 17:58

What do you mean by social collapse?

Martial law?
Civil war?
Protests?

I think civil unrest could occur but I don’t really know what protesters would trash. The big riots in 2011 trashed shops and pubs etc. I don’t think people would do that now in a time where businesses are really struggling.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 16/10/2020 17:58

What can you do to prevent an impact from social collapse exactly? Confused

Redcups64 · 16/10/2020 17:58

No, not by a long shot! Hmm

Asterion · 16/10/2020 17:59

What does he mean by "social collapse" Confused

motorcyclenumptiness · 16/10/2020 18:02

Not sure eyerolling constitutes social collapse

Gettingthrough2020 · 16/10/2020 18:02

What exactly is social collapse? What does that look like?

MillieEpple · 16/10/2020 18:06

I think we might see a some rioting and widespread poverty.

I dont think you can prepare for social collapse really.

Asterion · 16/10/2020 18:06

And how, exactly, does he plan to insulate your household from "social collapse"? Buy loads more loo roll?

BrokenBrit · 16/10/2020 18:11

Well, I’m not sure about societal collapse, but we certainly have a recipe/ perfect storm for a winter of discontent coming up.

Further widespread deaths and illness from the poorly managed pandemic.
Coronavirus deniers and libertarians up in arms about their loss of freedoms.
Economic recession and mass job losses.
The utter horrors of a no deal Brexit.
People missing their family and friends and a sense of loss and dread.
Lack of unity between local leaders and no unity between the devolved nations on covid and even less on Brexit.

Not sure what we can do though on an individual level though.

Echobelly · 16/10/2020 18:14

I don't think in the next six weeks, but I think those of us my age (40s) have seen the best years of the world we're going to live in now. Worst of all, our kids have Sad

Between covid, Brexit, political populism and environmental disaster the relatively stable world most of us grew up in in Europe and US is gone and there will be disorder, shifting governments and quite possibly war on the cards.

FippertyGibbett · 16/10/2020 18:15

I am personally trying to keep the Prosecco business buoyant 😉🥂🍾

motorcyclenumptiness · 16/10/2020 18:15

Buy loads more loo roll?
Bulk-buying Andrex is the opiate of the masses

amusedtodeath1 · 16/10/2020 18:19

Not imminent but it's on the list of worst case scenario events. It's been a possible outcome since this all started.

I'd make sure you have enough supplies, make sure your property is as secure as possible and hope you're over reacting.

turnthebiglightoff · 16/10/2020 18:19

War? Wow. What a leap from social unrest. Do you enjoy scaremongering?

tortoiseshell1985 · 16/10/2020 18:20

I honestly think civil unrest is a possibility too

Zzz1234 · 16/10/2020 18:22

Will get my wine and big roll order in now

Viviennemary · 16/10/2020 18:22

Whatever happens it's a total and utter mess.

2bazookas · 16/10/2020 18:23

I expect he dug you a bunker for the previous EOTWAWKI, which was Y2K. Just buy him some camouflage outfits and a mirror.
The mirror is for signalling in morse flashes when phones no longer work.

Dawnlassie · 16/10/2020 18:24

People are pissed off no doubt. But most articles about unrest are purely clickbait. Online newspaper writes articles about worst case scenarios = more clicks = more revenue.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/10/2020 18:24

Social collapse is a tad dramatic, but civil disobedience, protests, possibly unrest in inner city tier 3 areas is possible.

I think we came close in June but BLM captured and focused some of the tension and the pubs opened up in time to stop escalating.

Fannybawz · 16/10/2020 18:25

Actually I do think this might occur and I’m normally boringly rational about such matters

I don’t see how it can’t? One demographic is pretty well cocooned from all effects

The most vulnerable are vulnerable in every way

MingeofDeath · 16/10/2020 18:27

Wait until the lights go out...

Pelleas · 16/10/2020 18:28

The wealth divide in this country means we are only ever a few steps away from social collapse.
