Social collapse imminent?

AdultHumanFemale · 16/10/2020 17:53

DP and I have just been listening to R4 PM, and the unfolding conflict surrounding tiered regional restrictions. DP reckons we are potentially 6 weeks away from some degree of escalating social collapse in the UK, and should take precautions to insulate ourselves from the impact.
Prudent or unnecessary?
What measures might those of you who may be thinking along the same lines be taking?

The Russians managed to hold 2 revolutions during february and October to be fair.

Nandakanda · 16/10/2020 20:05

Time for the "Great Reset" according to the World Economic Forum:

ancientgran · 16/10/2020 20:05

Well that just isn't British is it.

ladiessmock · 16/10/2020 20:06

HOLD IT - did somebody really say Black Forest mince pies?! Sounds like social collapse is already upon us.

emmcan · 16/10/2020 20:07

No.
There will be riots/civil unrest in the usual areas.
Liverpool, Manchester, London, Birmingham.

Would be nice to get rid of Westminster though.

Coconuttts · 16/10/2020 20:08

Are you bit scared of a northern accent? Bless you

Do you really think modern day British people can get themselves together to organise a revolution?
Whatyoucanandcantdo · 16/10/2020 20:08

DH and MIL are VERY smart individuals
Especially MIL who recently retired from an influential government role.

Oh well, we ought to be very scared then shouldn't we Hmm

Your right OP. I'm off to make myself a toilet paper fort, that'll keep out the hordes.

Andante57 · 16/10/2020 20:10

I am being serious when I say that Brexit, Covid and Boris are all empowered by Putin

Do you think the Chinese government are also trying to destabilise UK?

SixesAndEights · 16/10/2020 20:10

Supermarkets were pretty bare here. It was like locusts had descended!

I didn't take it seriously and was left with a single toilet roll before I found a small supply at my local Spar!

I think it's a bit naive to think that a no deal Brexit isn't going to have an affect with, at the beginning at least, huge delays at ports. This will affect the supply chain. The UK is by no means self sufficient.

I've been stocking up on pantry items, yes and loo roll. If nothing happens then they can be used as and when, if there's some kind of disarray then at least I won't be having to trundle about trying to find stuff at a time when Covid risk is going to be much higher than now.

Spike 'em with enough Kirsch and nobody will be doing anything other than falling asleep on the sofa for the evening.

This is very specific of him. Can he show his working?

The Russians are tough bastards!

Are the British? Er......

AuntieLydia · 16/10/2020 20:16

No, people won't want to go out and riot, too mch effort.
They'll just carry on hurling abuse at strangers on the internet.

AdultHumanFemale · 16/10/2020 20:17

Just seen there are quite a few responses. We were cooking when I posted and have just finished eating.
I posted for some kind of counter-point to what DP was saying, because I thought he was over-thinking.
FWIW, Ruffle, I haven't described any kind of 'peace' in my OP? Maybe you're referencing another poster.
DP is saying pretty much what you're saying, RedToothBrush.
He definitely has not been reading conspiracy websites as a PP suggested, he's just interested in current affairs and economics and works in a field where this kind of thinking is considered prudent. He's not talking about holing up in a small-holding with a shotgun and a year's worth of canned peaches, more like making sure necessary repairs are carried out, having some cash in the house and enough fuel for the winter. That kind of stuff.
I jokingly referenced the MN peppers threads, and posted on a whim, definitely not intending to annoy anyone.

I find this behaviour of revelling in predictions of societal doom to be a very masculine characteristic. Much like vindictiveness and, for the most part, shadenfreude.

They just love the (proxy) excitement and the notion of others' suffering.

MuserOwl · 16/10/2020 20:22

escalating social collapse sounds like an oxymoron.

What does this mean?

Dustballs · 16/10/2020 20:23

I want to go out protesting but am scared of catching Covid. I think there’d be riots happening now if there wasn’t the fear of COVID getting us.

I’d mostly be rioting about a no deal
Brexit.

BathtubGin · 16/10/2020 20:24

@Chumleymouse

I've got the street mafia mobilised and making petrol bombs in my garage as we speak.
They look lovely burning at halloween - unique lanterns
wherethewildthingis · 16/10/2020 20:28

This thread reminds me of threads in Feb /March where some people were saying Covid was going to be very serious, result in lockdown and panic buying. Absolutely the same tone in terms of sarcy, scathing responses. A lot of posters on this site are more interested in coming over as clever and snarky than they are in considering someone might have a point.
An absolutely huge swathe of the population is about to lose their job. If we have another wave of this disease like we did in march, then essential public services may not be able to run. And yes a very real possibility is that this would result in social collapse. As someone above said, wait until the lights go off.

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/10/2020 20:31

@Echobelly

I don't think in the next six weeks, but I think those of us my age (40s) have seen the best years of the world we're going to live in now. Worst of all, our kids have Sad

Between covid, Brexit, political populism and environmental disaster the relatively stable world most of us grew up in in Europe and US is gone and there will be disorder, shifting governments and quite possibly war on the cards.

WTF? I’m in my forties and have lived through four wars, and decades of terrorist bombings. Three economic collapses/crises including high unemployment. I have lived through rivers catching in fire due to the pollution and smog alerts where the air was so polluted you could not go outside. And you think these were the “best years”
PicsInRed · 16/10/2020 20:32

@Pelleas

The collapse of the infrastructure, if it necessitated a return to a more primitive way of life, would be a good thing for every species on the planet except humans. If it happens I will embrace it unselfishly.
It'd be marvellous to be a man - especially a white man. For everyone else, particularly women and children, more particularly if not of independent means, it would be spectacularly shite. Specifically? Loads of forced labour, rape and "disappearances".

You can keep your brave new world.

user1471565182 · 16/10/2020 20:32

My russian mate at work genuinely complains about the british weather.
