Social collapse imminent?

DP and I have just been listening to R4 PM, and the unfolding conflict surrounding tiered regional restrictions. DP reckons we are potentially 6 weeks away from some degree of escalating social collapse in the UK, and should take precautions to insulate ourselves from the impact.
Prudent or unnecessary?
What measures might those of you who may be thinking along the same lines be taking?

No, it’s winter now. Everyone will be inside till April.

ColonSemiColon · 16/10/2020 18:36

Societal collapse no, but civil unrest almost certainly. Have you ever seen a scene in a film where something happens like the charismatic mayor stands on the steps of the library and gives a stirring anti-government speech to the townsfolk? Did everything go smoothly from there?!

StealthPolarBear · 16/10/2020 18:36

I don't think it's out of the question

StealthPolarBear · 16/10/2020 18:37

@Echobelly

I don't think in the next six weeks, but I think those of us my age (40s) have seen the best years of the world we're going to live in now. Worst of all, our kids have Sad

Between covid, Brexit, political populism and environmental disaster the relatively stable world most of us grew up in in Europe and US is gone and there will be disorder, shifting governments and quite possibly war on the cards.

Agree and I suspect the same is true of my parents and in laws, all late sixties or 70/71
Destinysdaughter · 16/10/2020 18:40

Agree im 55 and have never been so grateful to be old as I had the freedom to do what I liked when I was younger. Really feel for the young pp at the moment, this is not what life is supposed to be like and you can't get those years back!

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/10/2020 18:41

Mmm. I think quiet disobedience is more likely Govt says ‘no one still allowed to see family’
People ‘ stuff that. I’ve had enough ‘

Admittedly that’s already happening but I think more and more people will just quietly meet up until almost everyone’s doing it

Sodamncold · 16/10/2020 18:43

Can you pass on my thanks to your DP

He really made me chuckle

ancientgran · 16/10/2020 18:46

Wrong time of year for riots, trust me the British don't like rioting in the rain or cold weather. If we have an unusually mild week they might.

I used to sort out policing for riots, first thing I did every morning was check the weather. This was the mid 80s.

EvilPea · 16/10/2020 18:47

I know at the beginning of all this police were told to prepare for riots.
I do think there will be fewer people complying this time but I don’t think there will be riots.

randomer · 16/10/2020 18:47

I think your DP has a point and its frightening. Still, lets not let a chance to be nasty and sarcastic pass us by eh?

BathtubGin · 16/10/2020 18:47

@FippertyGibbett

I am personally trying to keep the Prosecco business buoyant 😉🥂🍾
How will that go with a no deal Brexit?
MsPeachh · 16/10/2020 18:48

Honestly I hope so.

BrazenlyDefying · 16/10/2020 18:49

DP reckons we are potentially 6 weeks away from some degree of escalating social collapse in the UK

Has your DP been reading conspiracy websites?

ancientgran · 16/10/2020 18:50

FippertyGibbett I'm doing my best for mince pies and chocolate. It's a shame they reckon obesity is a bad thing for covid so I am keeping an eye on the scales and when I hit a BMI of 25 I'll cry.

everythingisginandroses · 16/10/2020 18:50

Have a Biscuit

romeolovedjulliet · 16/10/2020 18:50

good grief talk about scare mongering, we've had all this previously in some shape orform and the masses have not ransacked houses for food nor have we had the projected doomsday scenario, so many people were predicting.
watching with interest as i seriously think this is daft but i might be going against the hive mind here and get a good kicking as a result.

MissConductUS · 16/10/2020 18:52

Your DP is obviously a keen observer of social dynamics. In six weeks it'll be Mad Max meets Oxfordshire.

picklemewalnuts · 16/10/2020 18:52

Has anyone got any information about the wealth tax/emergency tax measures where the government can take a slice off the top straight out of bank accounts.

neveradullmoment99 · 16/10/2020 18:54

But thats the thing, its not just the government that is going to suffer. They are. Its like cutting off your nose to spite your face. I really feel that it is a possiblity. Maybe on bonfire night? Smile
frumpety · 16/10/2020 18:55

What does he mean by social collapse ? all of society , the whole shebang ? because the only way to insulate against that would be fleeing the country , is that his plan ?

MagicSummer · 16/10/2020 18:57

@Mingeofdeath - get a generator! We have 3!

Cocklepops · 16/10/2020 18:57

May I suggest you take precautions to insulate yourself from your DH?

bibbitybobbitycats · 16/10/2020 18:58

One demographic is pretty well cocooned from all effects

Which one is that?

Asterion · 16/10/2020 18:59

So social collapse is on its way, but sarcasm is a step too far? Hmm
LizzieMacQueen · 16/10/2020 19:00

There was a news report of somewhere's civil unrest after the introduction of no more than 5 people meeting up. Can't remember which country but think it was Europe.

So @AdultHumanFemale , your DH may be right after all.
