What's the best European city break you've been on?

I love a weekend away exploring, obviously not at the moment. Our last trip was to Paris in January this year. We've also been to Vienna, Copenhagen & Barcelona.

Where are some great cities you've visited in Europe and why? How long did you go for? Did you travel as a couple or a family?

Verona was lush - l preferred it to Rome although you wouldn't need a while weekend there. Bruges was really nice too. Oh gosh too many to mention!! I love a European city!!

Venice. We went at Halloween and it was just shifting from Summer into Autumn. We went to Burano and came back just as the sun was setting behind the city. It was so magical. Never forget it.
Also Boston in the fall. Two amazing trips.

Quite a few of these places are on my wishlist. I liked:
Bruges
Utrecht (especially over Amsterdam)
Lubeck.

I join the other recommendations for Lisbon.

Athens and Venice

Maybe we should keep this thread going until we can all go to these wonderful places again. Adding to my wishlist from all of yours!

@Ignacious

Florence for me - my absolute favourite place.
Mine too. It’s one of my happy places.
Vello · 14/10/2020 17:15

Lisbon, for sure. Incredible architecture, restaurants, history.

LionLily · 14/10/2020 17:19

Venice or Florence, even if I'm a bit skint.

It's the wonderment of standing in places you've spent years looking at in books or on the telly.
Or the realisation that stuff you would have found deadly boring in your teens, you now find totally fascinating.

FinTutuola · 14/10/2020 17:23

Rome. The first city break I went on with my now husband and I still think wistfully about it. We went right at the beginning of December - the weather was perfect and it was lovely and quiet.

winterinmadeira · 14/10/2020 17:23

Florence and Ljubljana and Salzburg

MintyIguana · 14/10/2020 17:25

Seville, Prague, Berlin, Llubljana

NatMoz · 14/10/2020 17:26

It depends on what you're looking for.

In Europe for me hands down my favourite city is Lviv. It's cheap as it is not the Euro but the city was designed on the style of Vienna so has gorgeous squares and churches etc. The markets are lovely and there are so many amazing things to do at night.

It's a gem of a city and I love it. Don't expect everyone to speak English though. The older generations generally can't but there is at least one person who can in every restaurant/shop.

Palermo

katedan · 14/10/2020 17:29

Amsterdam or Florence

There are lots of Dutch cities nicer than Amsterdam..in a good way as I love Amsterdam too. The Netherlands is quite under rated.

We also enjoyed Rotterdam for its modern architecture and eco friendly shopping.

areyoubeingserviced · 14/10/2020 21:30

Loved Croatia - did a Dubrovnik / Korcula / Split trip which was lovely. Split was an eyeopener - didn't know much about it before I went and I was amazed by Diocletian's Palace.

Notreallyawaitress · 14/10/2020 22:05

Bordeaux was a wonderful city break - fabulous wine & food, very pretty architecture and the people we met were so friendly. Would love to go back.
Also enjoyed Rome, Seville, Barcelona, Lisbon & Prague

European mainland - Madrid. Both the food & art are fantastic.

UK - York. Delightful streets, great food, The Minster.

CherryPavlova · 14/10/2020 22:22

I think there are so many and it’s Les s about the city and more about the people. My favourites are
Rekyjavik for the swimming and otherworldliness.
Budapest for hidden history, swimming and so much to do.
Salzburg for nothing to do with the Sound of Music except a gazebo.
Bucharest for being a bit less ordinary but incredible history and Transylvania.
Valencia for sea and city, human scale, cycling.
Amsterdam for small cheese, history, beer, history.

greenemerald · 14/10/2020 22:47

Istanbul. I've been back more than 5 times. One of my favourites. Sarajevo & Mostar were also amazing
