Do you have an unfortunate name? Or know someone else that does?

It's been drawn to my attention by DH this week, that because of my habit of trailing the end of the word away to a squiggle when I'm signing my name, I've been signing everything as TWat_ for quite a while. He found this hilarious.

And I can't even blame him for his unfortunate surname beginning as I was another name beginning with Wat...before I married.

Probably everybody called Karen, poor sods.

Spottydoggy · 10/10/2020 14:54

We have a regular customer with the surname Vulgar.

I’ve also come across a person called Maninder with the surname Bath. 😂

purpleleotard · 10/10/2020 14:56

A lad called Yoni.

Oh how did I know this was going to be the first comment? Seriously just stop this shit. Karen is only an "unfortunate" name because other people are idiots. It's actually a perfectly normal name, and now because of millions of idiots, lots of actual women called Karen are now being harassed and bullied, both online and in real life. Just stop this misogynist crap.
Hoppinggreen · 10/10/2020 15:00

The editor of my local newspaper is called Wayne Ankers. He always uses his full name.

toffeekiwi · 10/10/2020 15:01

@Kness I agree, they must be thoroughly sick of it.

DioneTheDiabolist · 10/10/2020 15:01

I knew a woman called Atracta Feeley.

Please consider how your "poor sods" comment came across.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/10/2020 15:18

What a weird argument you are working up over toffeekiwis perfectly reasonable post about Karens. I am sure most Karens genuinely are fed up with the way their name has been hijacked!

I knew a Jolyon Stiff many years ago and always thought his name was a bit unfortunate.

ImaSababa · 10/10/2020 15:20

I feel sorry for people surnamed Seamen and Cumming.

Wetweekend99 · 10/10/2020 15:20

I know of a Norman Norman. Poor man. I have no idea what was running through his parents heads when they named him that.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 10/10/2020 15:23

We genuinely know someone called Richard Head.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 10/10/2020 15:23

Also know a Robbie Robinson at school.

I used to work with a Robert Roberts. His mum's favourite boys name had always been Robert and the fact she married Mr Roberts did not change that. Or so he said. Like Dave Allen's finger, the story changed with every telling.

I went to school with Jo King and Richard Bottom.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 10/10/2020 15:26

I used to work with a Paul Ennis.

A teacher in my old primary school took the wise decision to use her maiden name for work purposes as her married name was Hoare. Kids can be especially cruel

kennelmaid · 10/10/2020 15:26

Don't know how it was spelt but it was pronounced Alan Faeces.

kness · 10/10/2020 15:26

@Chicchicchicchiclana Yes, I'm genuinely fed up. But what makes me even more fed up is the fact that it's been featured on an unfortunate names thread. Only misogynists think it's "unfortunate". Everyone else thinks it's a normal name. It's not like being called Michael Hunt where it sounds rude if you shorten the first name.

BlackberrySky · 10/10/2020 15:29

I once came across an American man called Randy Bumgardner. Always had a giggle at that one!

zafferana · 10/10/2020 15:29

We had someone from British Gas called Anal (pron: Ann-al) once. Poor guy!

Surnames starting with the prefix Porn_ seem to be reasonably common in (I think) Thailand, which is another one that doesn't translate too well to English.

BonnieTellyLass · 10/10/2020 15:30

My grans next door neighbour is Mary Christmas. I think its cute rather than unfortunately

Through work I met an Iwona Kiss. Again not unfortunate but noteworthy!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

ProudAuntie76 · 10/10/2020 15:31

I met a beautiful young woman on a course once and she embarrassingly introduced herself as “Sultana”. “Ahhh I replied, how lovely! Your name means Queen, I think?” Her face lit up and she explained that in her parents language it does indeed mean Queen but most British people made fun of her because it’s a fruit and she’d been relentlessly teased at school. I felt so sorry for her...it’s a beautiful sound and meaning otherwise.

I have a very unfortunate name. It's 'Mum'.
Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 10/10/2020 15:32

A man called ‘Maboob’

Badbanana · 10/10/2020 15:33

My Ds’s teacher is called ‘Mr Groom’.

The head teachers name is hyphenated and ends with ‘Belcher’.

I’m not even pulling your leg. I did look and think teaching is the last profession I’d have gone in to with a name like that!
