Do you have an unfortunate name? Or know someone else that does?

It's been drawn to my attention by DH this week, that because of my habit of trailing the end of the word away to a squiggle when I'm signing my name, I've been signing everything as TWat_ for quite a while. He found this hilarious.

And I can't even blame him for his unfortunate surname beginning as I was another name beginning with Wat...before I married.

DH once worked with a Pearl Nicholas Grin

dancingindungarees · 10/10/2020 17:56

I know a Rosie Dick she never considered not changing her name on marriage.

LadyFannyButton · 10/10/2020 18:00

That poor man on twitter called John Lewis Grin he’s so busy every December.
I know a Mrs Dix
Someone used to be Mr Pratt but changed their name when getting married as they didn’t want their kids getting picked on in school like he did.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 10/10/2020 18:00

DH used to deliver post to a Pooja Pantts. Also knew a Richard Mycock.

Ohdoleavemealone · 10/10/2020 18:01

I knew someone with the surname "minger".

EAsy target for bullies!

FrancesFlute · 10/10/2020 18:02

My maiden surname has been mentioned up thread. I was teased about it at school and ended up changing it by deedpoll when I was about 13. Good decision as I was very very paranoid about it. I was so embarrassed and it knocked my confidence in formative years and I remember the teasing/bullying most days.

Those of you laughing at unfortunate names, remember noone can help what their name is Sad

Thankfully DH has an easily heard and fairly common surname I was glad to take.

LittleTiger007 · 10/10/2020 18:04

My first initial with my surname spells an unfortunate word. 😣😩 sigh. I use my middle initial a lot.

When I was at uni I knew a girl called Tess who married a Mr. Tickle. I kid you not. 😂. In that instance I would have kept my maiden name.

TheMarzipanDildo · 10/10/2020 18:06

kness

But everyone is agreeing with you! People are only saying it’s unfortunate because some arseholes use it in a derogatory way, not because it’s not a nice normal name. I don’t know why pointing this out is enabling misogynists.

WellTidy · 10/10/2020 18:12

DH works with a Michael Hunt. Always Michael. Never, ever Mike.

Derekhello · 10/10/2020 18:13

Someone I knew years ago knew somebody called Ophelia Balls, I kid you not

LittleDoritt · 10/10/2020 18:15

Tess Tickle is awesome!

I've posted before about my friends twins Sam and Ella. I still feel bad that I didn't have the guts to say anything at the beginning.

I took a booking from an Ally Gator once.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2020 18:15

@Hoppinggreen beat me to it.

I went to school with a Ronnie Rennie, and once knew a P.Orridge. I work with someone whose surname is Penistone, so his driving licence number starts with PENIS. I share a name with an infamous male rock singer!!

Marmite133 · 10/10/2020 18:18

@badbanana
Where I'm from, Belcher is a really common name. I've never thought of it being funny until you said! Isn't it weird how you get used to stuff.
I'll certainly be chuckling from now on when addressing one 😂

CatRamsey · 10/10/2020 18:21

Isaac Cox.

Also I almost don't believe this but my colleague swears she was in school with a boy called Joseph who had a sister called Mary, and their surname was Virgin.

IvysMum12 · 10/10/2020 18:21

My mother knew a Lancelot Funge.

ReggieCat · 10/10/2020 18:21

My mum used to get teased because her married name was Doris Wallis. She'd probably got more teasing if everyone had known her middle name was Alice.

I wouldn't have changed my name when I got married if I'd been her but it was a different era in the late 40s.

IHateCoronavirus · 10/10/2020 18:21

My DS is taught by a Dr De’ath.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/10/2020 18:23

Ex- colleagues Honor Head (maiden name) and Randy Katz (he was from the US where it wouldn't raise an eyebrow but living in the UK where it did). Doctor Doctor coming to deliver a lecture at the university where I used to work. Judge Judge (read about that one in the papers).

workhomesleeprepeat · 10/10/2020 18:26

I worked with a guy who’s surname was Grocock

Leah2005 · 10/10/2020 18:27

In Weymouth today - a dentist called Iona Pelican.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 10/10/2020 18:28

I used to work with Wilbur Wright.
He retired about 5 years ago.
Yes, my work is related to aviation

itssquidstella · 10/10/2020 18:30

I went to school with a Jenna Taylor. She's changed it.

MaosChaos · 10/10/2020 18:31

Knew a Gary Oke.

Miriel · 10/10/2020 18:34

I had a teacher called Mrs Pratt. Why on earth didn't she keep her original surname?

I also knew a Victoria Beckham who was quite annoyed when the Spice Girl got married!

kness · 10/10/2020 18:35

@toffeekiwi and @TheMarzipanDildo "Sods" is a derogatory word and comes across as a throwaway comment that you didn't really take seriously, like you're treating it like a joke. If you really cared, you would've chosen a different word.

My name is not "unfortunate". Stop trying to claim it is, as you are making things worse. My name does not belong in this thread. The context of this thread is names that accidentally sound rude.
