Do you have an unfortunate name? Or know someone else that does?

It's been drawn to my attention by DH this week, that because of my habit of trailing the end of the word away to a squiggle when I'm signing my name, I've been signing everything as TWat_ for quite a while. He found this hilarious.

And I can't even blame him for his unfortunate surname beginning as I was another name beginning with Wat...before I married.

I once knew someone called Sally, who refused to marry her long term partner because his surname was Lally. Sally Lally, always made me chuckle

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 10/10/2020 16:47

@LyndaSnellsSniff

We genuinely know someone called Richard Head.
My best friend's husband is Richard, but he goes by Dick. Their last name is Long. He has other choices of nicknames so I think he LIKES being Dick Long haha

A (very nice) girl at my secondary school was called Mystica Rudolph. No embarrassing connotations, but I always thought it would be something of a burden. Mystica, if you're on here, hope you love your name!

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 10/10/2020 16:59

@Hoppinggreen that's such a coincidence! I first spotted (and childishly sniggered at) Mr Wayne Ankers on said local newspaper only this morning!

JanewaysBun · 10/10/2020 17:01

I went to school with a breezy cox...

Frownette · 10/10/2020 17:01

Name's alright, I guess.

I did know a Gordon Bennett once.

Justgivemesomepeace · 10/10/2020 17:10

I used to work with Lynn Wynn and Honey Arneja. . Yesterday I dealt with a lovely customer called Bob Dinn.

PissPotPourri · 10/10/2020 17:11

I have known a Muff Dudgeon, a Titus Dragon, a Crystal Mayes and most unfortunately, a Gaye Tease

Councilworker · 10/10/2020 17:15

I know Wayne Ankers. He's a very nice chap. God knows what his parents were thinking.

My ex husband worked with a Peter Minge.
I dealt with a social worker called Jenny Taylor which is unfortunate.

I knew a lovely American called Randy Pratt. I never said anything as my maiden name was/is US slang for a toilet.

TartanDMs · 10/10/2020 17:25

I know a Richard Long that goes by Dick too, wonder if its the same one?

toffeekiwi · 10/10/2020 17:37

Please consider how your "poor sods" comment came across.

Probably that I felt for them having a name being hijacked in that way.
If you choose to be offended by somebody who feels for people called Karen because they have had their name used for a series of stupid names then you are easily offended.

zafferana · 10/10/2020 17:37

We had a policeman in the town I grew up in. He was surname was Balls, which he changed to Ball.

He looked like Foggy out of Last of the Summer Wine, so he was always known in our house as Foggy Balls.

Gah. Stupid memes not stupid names. Stupid auto-correct.
toffeekiwi · 10/10/2020 17:41

@Chicchicchicchiclana

What do you mean "only misogynists think it's unfortunate". Surely you mean "only misogynists use the name Karen in a derogatory way".
You'd think so wouldn't you. DSil is called Karen and loves her name but finds the memes annoying to say the least, she knows I think it's unfortunate and hasn't accused me of being a misogynist yet.

Guess what my name is and I've got to ring and ask to speak to a manager Monday

Oh, tricky - I hope you don't get an idiot on the end of the phone.

Didlum · 10/10/2020 17:43

I worked for a school records office in the late 80s and there was a child with the first name Labia. Also met a Poonam . I don't think either name works that well in this country

Mommabear20 · 10/10/2020 17:45

My old area managers name was Mike Hunt. 🤦‍♀️

TinkersRucksack · 10/10/2020 17:50

TroysMammy · 10/10/2020 17:54
