New washing machine takes 4-5 hours to wash a full load, is this normal?

My old Bosch washing machine died after 15 years, so I bought a new Samsung 9 kg add wash one, after lots of positive reviews both on line and from family and friends. I tried my friends one which was 9kg and had a daily wash cycle and was really impressed. So we bought the latest model thinking thinking they would just have improved on the older model. How wrong we were. After it finally arrived (a whole other story), it has lots of different cycles but only 2 where you can use it for a 9kg load and they take 4-5+ hours and it doesn’t have the daily wash function. It does have a 15 minute one but you can only put in 2kg and it does a cold wash.

I’m not sure how it has a A+++ rating it takes hours to wash a normal family load. I’m not sure why they have a 9kg drum when most of the settings have a maximum of 4kg load. My old machine washed a load in about one hour. Is this normal in new machines?

I’m so disappointed it was quite expensive so I can’t even replace it. I only wanted a machine which would wash my clothes in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only had it just over a week and wish I’d gone for the older model with less options but a one hour daily wash.

To top it off the new Bosch dryer has decided it only want to dry shirts etc and anything like T-shirt’s come out damp no matter how many times you put them back in😬.

I want my old appliances back at least they washed everything in an hour and dried everything you put in there. Are new appliances just not as good?

I should have come on here before I bought it, you’ve all made some really interesting comments.

I've got an old hotpoint top loader in the outhouse.

similar to this one. I did have to buy it a new pump after it did too many hairy horse stuff but I had it over 10 years. I was going to buy a new washer when I move but maybe not.
I want a good fast wash that takes a full load, a wool wash and a long wash for mucky stuff and that's it.

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 07/10/2020 13:20

I have to confess...I actually have no idea what setting I’m supposed to use on our washing machine. I thought the A+ setting meant, you know, really good, but clearly it’s the eco setting and even that only takes 2hrs47 hours so clearly isn’t as eco as yours! Synthetics takes 2.17 so I just use that most of the time, can’t see much difference in the settings.

safariboot · 07/10/2020 13:26

It's fairly common. The Bosch we bought a few years ago isn't quite that bad but slower than our old machine was. (It also brutalises the clothes.)

I think it's because washing the clothes for ages in the same old cold water uses less water and electricity to get the same cleaning. The motor uses little power compared to heating water. Hence why the "Speed Perfect* button makes it use more water and power for a quicker wash.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 13:28

I would definitely recommend anyone looking for a new machine focus on the cycle times and settings you will use regularly and not get distracted by all the other things. I hope this post has helped others too.

We had an AWFUL Indesit washer/dryer in our old house - it was A++++++++++ could save the world on a delicate wash (obvs an exaggeration) but truly it was the worst thing I have ever owned.

We had to wake up at the crack of dawn to wash bedding in winter because if it wasn't on by 7 am then it would still be drying at 8pm.

The tumble dryer was obsolete because it did such a terrible job, the washer would take longer than it should have done, it had no decent settings, no timer to let you know how long etc. I used to take important loads round to my Mum's because it was just easier.

We left it when we moved, cut our losses and bought a new one that is incredible in comparison. Washers are the most important white good we own so having a bad one really affects the running of the house.

If I were you, OP, I'd flog it on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace if you can't return it and buy a new one, put it down to a lesson learnt!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 07/10/2020 13:31

I have a Samsung and honestly couldn't tell you which load takes what weight. I just shove it all in there and turn it on. It washes fine, never had a problem. Touch wood

Derelictwreck · 07/10/2020 13:32

Can't you use the 5kg 55min programme? Even if you have to use it twice Grin

TitsOutForHarambe · 07/10/2020 13:33

Are you sure you can't get a new one? I Would at least try and give them a call and see if there's anything they can do. If not, may be you can sell it on to someone else. I know you'd lose a bit of money but if it's really driving you crazy then it might be worth it.

I have a John Lewis one which is excellent, you can pick different temperatures and different lengths for the washes and also you can pause it mid wash to add things if you want, it also has a 15 minute wash.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 13:37

Iminaglasscaseofemotion, this new model doesn’t let you do that unfortunately, it sets the time automatically once you turn it on.

Mines an older machine.

I press 'speed' to reduce the wash time by half.

shieldedsally · 07/10/2020 13:38

I think you just need to adjust the way you wash: can you put it on overnight maybe so it finishes as you get up? I suspect this kind of minor adjustment is the sort of thing we are all going to have to do more of in future.

homemadecommunistrussia · 07/10/2020 13:38

My machine is from john lewis and has a brilliant 20 minute wash. It's a few years old so it doesn't seem to be available any more. this newer one boasts a 14 minute wash!
I do use the longer washes with a timer overnight, but it really is good to have the option.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 13:40

I might try getting in touch with Samsung and Curry’s (😬 if I can get through) and see if they can help.

sweetkitty · 07/10/2020 13:42

Mine has 3 settings an auto which takes 4 hours, an extra which is 4 hours 30 mins or a speed 1 40 mins, I use the speed mostly or the 60 degree white which is 3 hours.

BlackSwan · 07/10/2020 13:44

Such long cycles. I don't understand how it's energy efficient.

Expect before long we'll have a washing energy consumption scandal like the fuel emissions scandal. Men won't be so interested in that one though - no cars, not sexy.

Maryann1975 · 07/10/2020 13:44

I had similar when I bought my new machine, although the cycle takes 3 hours and I think that is bad enough! I spend my day off doing washing most weeks which was fine with the old machine, when a wash took 1hr38 (how sad that I remember that!) but a nightmare now.

I’ve figured out over time that it’s quicker to do a 60 minute daily wash that can only take 4 kg, rather than a 3 hour wash that does 9kg. Although that’s not helpful if I’m in and out and trying to do other things on my day off too.

It’s definitely something to consider when buying a new washer and something I hadn’t even considered until I bought the new one.

RustyBear · 07/10/2020 13:49

Which? reviews give runtimes for 40° cotton and 40° synthetic washes - if anyone wants me to check a particular model then @ me and I'll check if there's a review for it. They haven't done the OP's model yet though, so not sure how much of a time lag there is.

amusedbush · 07/10/2020 13:49

Just had a look and I lied, I have an 8kg machine - Samsung WW80J5555FC/GH. It was purchased exactly a year ago so it's odd that an even newer machine would have fewer/worse settings!

ChillerKillerCroissant · 07/10/2020 13:56

I think I have your machine's sulky sibling as a dishwasher OP - it cleans dishes well but I use a lower temp and press the turbo button to get the run time down to 1hr 40mins, the eco setting takes 3 hours to do a load of dishes (Miele) whereas the Cheapo Beko it replaced could wash and dry the dishes in 60 minutes.

You've certainly given me some pointers for when my washing machine needs replacing and I'll be checking the programme times carefully, I hope some of the manufacturers take note of this thread - the price of progress eh? Hmm A washing machine that can only run one load a day isn't that useful!

FlorenceNightshade · 07/10/2020 13:59

Jeezuz surely you could get the bucket and mangle out in that time! I couldn’t be doing with that definitely try and send it back!!!

I have a Candy rapido it does a daily wash in 39mins, 9kg 1800 spin. Some of the other cycles are longer (up to 3hrs I think) and I use them now and again but life is too short to be waiting 5 hours for the privilege of sorting out wet washing!

Poor OP, you are a warning for is all

Coughsyrupsucks · 07/10/2020 14:05

Oh crap, I wish I’d seen this a few hours ago. Guess what we ordered an hour ago. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though, at least I’ll be expecting it to not work like my old one now.
