New washing machine takes 4-5 hours to wash a full load, is this normal?

My old Bosch washing machine died after 15 years, so I bought a new Samsung 9 kg add wash one, after lots of positive reviews both on line and from family and friends. I tried my friends one which was 9kg and had a daily wash cycle and was really impressed. So we bought the latest model thinking thinking they would just have improved on the older model. How wrong we were. After it finally arrived (a whole other story), it has lots of different cycles but only 2 where you can use it for a 9kg load and they take 4-5+ hours and it doesn’t have the daily wash function. It does have a 15 minute one but you can only put in 2kg and it does a cold wash.

I’m not sure how it has a A+++ rating it takes hours to wash a normal family load. I’m not sure why they have a 9kg drum when most of the settings have a maximum of 4kg load. My old machine washed a load in about one hour. Is this normal in new machines?

I’m so disappointed it was quite expensive so I can’t even replace it. I only wanted a machine which would wash my clothes in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only had it just over a week and wish I’d gone for the older model with less options but a one hour daily wash.

To top it off the new Bosch dryer has decided it only want to dry shirts etc and anything like T-shirt’s come out damp no matter how many times you put them back in😬.

I want my old appliances back at least they washed everything in an hour and dried everything you put in there. Are new appliances just not as good?

@Shopaholic100 yes!! mine is a 10kg also though ! It is entirely possible to have a large machine that can take an hour. It's all about research! I heard about the Samsung one when I was researching but opted against it for several reasons 🙈sorry I know that's not helpful

In the end I went with the hoover "one touch" 10kg. It was well under 400!

I know, I thought I had especially as I had used one already😭, obviously not enough. It does wash really well, the clothes come out smelling great, just takes hours to achieve that. Glad you found a good one.

Just called Samsung to ask about the 55 minute 5kg cycle which some of you have mentioned earlier and was advertised on the Curry’s website, to be told this model doesn’t do that. To be honest I wasn’t confident in his response he didn’t sound too sure.

Isn't this good grounds for returning the machine OP?

As if Curry's advertised it as so......

Interesting that every fire brigade in the UK will tell you not to run your washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher while you are out or overnight as they are such a high fire risk

Oh god, do they include washing machines in that?! I knew about tumble dryers (and ds1's school friend was badly injured and spent weeks in hospital after a house fire caused by a tumble dryer, so even if there wasn't a general warning I'd have been very wary after that) but I didn't know they also advised against running washing machines overnight or in an empty house. God.

BertieBotts · 08/10/2020 11:38

Well the thing with the washing machine/tumble drier warning - I've never come across this warning in other countries, only the UK, so it made me wonder what is so incredibly flammable about UK washing machines, and then the Hotpoint/Whirlpool scandal came out, that a massive number of their machines have serious defects causing a fire hazard. Which sort of makes me think that actually it's probably not some trait inherent to washing machines, but that it is specifically a problem with Hotpoint/Whirlpool appliances (plus whatever other about seven names they traded under) and that fire brigades hadn't necessarily made the brand link but more the washing machine link.

If anyone can specifically refute this I would be interested to hear it but that's the conclusion I've drawn from the info I have, anyway.

Emeraldshamrock · 08/10/2020 11:46

I mainly use the daily wash it is 102 minutes with a 1400 spin not sure if its ever the full 9 kilos as I do a wash every day.
Clothes come out clean.
Or 36 min for a delicate.
I love my Samsung WM.

Shopaholic100 · 08/10/2020 12:29

It clearly shows it on the website. I’ve just spoken to two more Samsung “Experts”, but no one can tell me. The last person has forwarded my details to the technical team, who should be in touch.

@BertieBotts
To be on the safe side I just don’t have any electrical appliances (except the fridge freezer obviously) on when I’m not at home, personally I just don’t think it’s worth the risk. There’s always a first time for any appliance to go wrong. Maybe I’m just extra cautious.

@isthismylifenow, I’ll see what Samsung say and may consider it.

You know the instructions aren’t great when the company who make it and sell it both can’t decipher them.

@unmarkedbythat turns out washing machines are way worse than tumble driers. Never run anything if you’re not home www.ific.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Home-Laundry-Fire-Risks-Jan-18.pdf

Our Bosch was great - 60 degree wash in 1 hour and 5 minutes, but it started playing up after 2 1/2 years, and at 4 years died. Uneconomical to repair. Our previous Bosch only lasted 5 years, so much as I love the machines, they just weren't durable.

We have just bought a Grundig 9kg 1400 spin from Currys on advice from the manager. So far we are happy with it. About 1 hour 16 for a 60 degree wash.

NigellaAwesome · 08/10/2020 14:02

Op, if Currys have advertised it wrong, then just return it to them. Make sure you do it promptly though.

Consumer Rights Act specifies 30 days for full refund if faulty or not as described. From experience, if you try to do it on day 31, Currys won't entertain it.

Iwantacookie · 08/10/2020 14:07

I dont leave applicences on when I'm out because yes a fire would be devastating if we lost the pets it would be 1000 times worse so it's never been worth the risk.

sashagabadon · 08/10/2020 14:10

I love my machine. It is a Bosch excel 7 varioperfect. Maybe 3 years old. Has variety of washes cotton, easy care, dark wash, delicate, wool plus just spin cycles and a super quick wash and for each wash type you can adjust the spin speed, the temp, the time length. And a timer too.
It really is great.
In real life I use the cotton wash at either 40 or 50 depending on what I am washing at max spin speed and also the wool wash for hand wash items at a lower temp and spin speed

fussychica · 08/10/2020 14:15

Blimey this sounds like a total nightmare. I'm dreading my fabulous, variable everything, 12 year old AEG going wrong for this very reason. Surely clothes laying in water for hours on end isn't good for them and will ultimately shorten their life so there's nothing eco about that.
Judging by many of the comments on here what manufacturers are producing for the supposed good of the planet is definitely not what most people want from their washing machine.

Emeraldshamrock · 08/10/2020 15:22

I only realised the daily wash should only have 4 kilo load.
I always fill 3/4 of the drum.

gubbbbbddaaaa · 08/10/2020 15:31

My 90 cycle takes 2.5 hours which is long enough. I use the quick wash which is an hour for 30 wash which works fine .. isn't there a quick wash on yours?

Mishmased · 08/10/2020 15:37

@Mummyoflittledragon

I have a 2 year old Bosch. It was reduced and I presume an older model. I use the easycare wash then reduce to 30 degrees for almost everything and it all comes out clean. Sometimes the machine flashes that the washing is too heavy ie a full load of towels. I just ignore and press start. This takes 1 hour 39.

If you can just ignore the weight and wash on the faster cycle, I would. I pretreat any stains so my clothes are generally only lightly soiled. Mine even washes dogs towels perfectly fine on this setting btw. Like hell am I going to wait 3-4 hours for every wash!

Same here and I use the exact same cycle, extra rinse and eco. Eco halves the washing time
GlmPmum · 08/10/2020 15:43

What a pain in the arse, sounds like it would be quicker for you to hand-wash it all!

Sheepareawesome · 08/10/2020 15:53

We thought that we had that too but when you select rinse and spin, we then press the water button and it removes the rinse so it just spins. Does yours do that? We found reviews online complaining that it had no spin only so I think lots of people don't realise you can remove the rinse part

Is there a deeper (hidden)? filter that needs cleaning for the tumble drier to work better?

MJMG2015 · 08/10/2020 16:12

@Shopaholic100 I'd be fiddling around to see if I could find a wash that suited me (you might find it hiding behind a random name) & if not it would be going back.

AO is my supplier of choice. Far nicer/easier to deal with than curry's!

My LG is fabulous. I'm renovating the kitchen though and to fit everything in, it needs to move & needs to be an integrated one (this one isn't), it's partly why the kitchen hasn't progressed! 🤣

4 hours - not in this lifetime. I thought 1.5 hours was too long! (But I think quick wash 30 mins isn't long enough!).

Not looking forward to replacing it (sadly LG don't do an integrated one -)

Topseyt · 08/10/2020 17:08

I always wonder when washing machine manufacturers will cotton on that most of us just don't want or use their super-duper all singing and all dancing massively long wash cycles!! We want simple ones that do the job without taking most of the day on one load. It really isn't difficult to understand, and years ago machines were much more like that.

I have the Bosch Varioperfect too. I do like it and you can shorten the cycle to something more reasonable. I only use two or three of its programs though.

Same with my tumble dryer, also a Bosch. It is 11 years old now and was one of the simplest I could find at the time. It still has 9 fancy programs though, of which I use just one. I simply want it to dry my laundry. Nothing else.

I will absolutely never be even remotely tempted to buy a washing machine or dryer with WiFi!! Why?
