New washing machine takes 4-5 hours to wash a full load, is this normal?

My old Bosch washing machine died after 15 years, so I bought a new Samsung 9 kg add wash one, after lots of positive reviews both on line and from family and friends. I tried my friends one which was 9kg and had a daily wash cycle and was really impressed. So we bought the latest model thinking thinking they would just have improved on the older model. How wrong we were. After it finally arrived (a whole other story), it has lots of different cycles but only 2 where you can use it for a 9kg load and they take 4-5+ hours and it doesn’t have the daily wash function. It does have a 15 minute one but you can only put in 2kg and it does a cold wash.

I’m not sure how it has a A+++ rating it takes hours to wash a normal family load. I’m not sure why they have a 9kg drum when most of the settings have a maximum of 4kg load. My old machine washed a load in about one hour. Is this normal in new machines?

I’m so disappointed it was quite expensive so I can’t even replace it. I only wanted a machine which would wash my clothes in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only had it just over a week and wish I’d gone for the older model with less options but a one hour daily wash.

To top it off the new Bosch dryer has decided it only want to dry shirts etc and anything like T-shirt’s come out damp no matter how many times you put them back in😬.

I want my old appliances back at least they washed everything in an hour and dried everything you put in there. Are new appliances just not as good?

I've got a BEKO 10kg washing machine, I bought it second hand, but its similar to this. It's brilliant.

Mix56 · 07/10/2020 11:34

I would look for a tuto on youtube. There must be a shorter program?
Try a sportswear program?

Boringnamechanging · 07/10/2020 11:37

My new Bosch 9kg has a 4.5 hour 40 deg wash. It also has a speed button which means it'll do the 9kg wash in 2 hours or 5kg in a bit over an hour (which I also use if the washing isn't very dirty with a full load)

megletthesecond · 07/10/2020 11:39

That's awful. I'd never keep on top of laundry with that.

I mainly use a 40° shirts and blouses 1hr cycle on my Bosch. Or the 15 min wash a few times a week. The cotton eco wash takes almost 4hrs, I don't use it often.

MondeoFan · 07/10/2020 11:42

I have the Samsung Addwash bought in January I use the quick wash a lot for school uniform and my work uniform etc it's 1 hour 2 min, I also use the bedding one 1 hour 45 min and sometimes use the cotton one and when it first comes on it says 3 hours but then changed to 1 hour 58 as I think the load wasn't full.
I've been really happy with the machine so far.

Oldraver · 07/10/2020 11:46

Yep ours is an 'Eco' machine and a normal 40 wash takes 2 hr 59 mins (dont ask). Though it rarely takes that long as I dont fill it to the brim

I love my beko - everday 30 wash takes 39 minutes. When this one dies I will be buying another one.

spiderlight · 07/10/2020 11:51

That's crazy. Our cheap-and-cheerful Beko does a daily quick wash at 40 degrees in 38 minutes or a fast cottons wash in an hour, and you can adjust the temperature and spin speed independently for every cycle. It's similar to the one linked above.

This is timely. I just replaced my Samsung Ecobubble after five years - it needed expensive repairs so bought a cheaper machine from AO.

It regularly fails to drain and I am being told on newer machines I need to adjust the load and they have told me to put clean towels in. I have already checked the filter (which was clean) and put towels in to even things out. It makes it even worse.

To me, if a machine does not wash clothes efficiently then it is not fit for purpose. My dd has the same machine without these issues. It does not do it each time but it is doing it more and more regularly indicating more than a load adjustment issue.

I wanted a quick cycle which the machine has but I then have to rewash so what is the point. So frustrating. Could you give them a ring for some suggestions? Sometimes the manufacturers are more helpful than the retailer.

I have a samsung one (eco bubble) washer dryer. It’s around 4 years old now though.
I use the baby wash for my daughters clothes, bedding, towels and work clothes (nhs) as it’s a 90 degree wash. It takes 2hrs.
I use the outdoor wash for most other things. Choice of 30,40 or 60 degree and takes 1hr 30. I’ve never had an issue and they usually finish quicker than that. I never use the eco bubble setting but I do have a 1hr eco wash and a 15 minute quick wash that I use depending on how dirty the clothes are. The longest wash is 3hrs and I have never used this ever.
I do sometimes fill the washer and never had a problem with the amount put in not being cleaned properly so am unsure how lenient the weight of the washing is for the amount of water used.

rwalker · 07/10/2020 11:54

Ours is the same just takes some getting used to we use the timer function start at 5.30 and ready at normal time to sort before go to work.

peachescariad · 07/10/2020 11:55

I have a BOSCH 9kg drum......40 degree easy care takes 1hr 35 and 40 degree cottons take 2hr 35.

4 hour wash is ridiculous .....your clothes wont last long being exposed to all that water and movement!

over50andfab · 07/10/2020 11:55

Most of my clothes are only lightly soiled so I tend to put on an eco wash (changing down to 40 degrees) then half way through put it onto rinse and spin. Not sure if this makes it more eco but it makes it a shorter wash. Other option is to always use the shorted synthetic wash, or the quick wash mode, which seems to adjust time-wise to whatever weight I load it with.

ekidmxcl · 07/10/2020 11:57

Get the washing machine on eBay and buy a much cheaper one that actually washes clothes. The money you lose will be worth it. Modern appliances can be a nightmare, your situation is common.

The tumble dryer - absolutely get rid as well.

I’ve had to do it. It feels crazy and wasteful getting rid, but believe me, you have to use this crap daily and it will cause you a lot of problems.

1990s · 07/10/2020 11:58

I also ignore the size limits and fill it and put it on whatever setting I feel like rather than the one is “says” is for full.

All comes out fine.

viques · 07/10/2020 11:58

I was horrified when I got my new John Lewis machine and saw how long the programmes took because my old, very old , machine had a super fast wash option that I used a lot. Then I discovered the reduce time button and find that works perfectly for me , stuff comes out fine.

The only complaint I have is that I don't need/use the denim, the outerwear, the sportswear or the anti allergy wash options. I didn't know you could get washing machine FOMO , but that's what I seem to have. Grin. But I am not overhauling my wardrobe just to test out wash programmes.

WaffleCash · 07/10/2020 11:58

How annoying! Is it a front loader? I've found they take an unusually long time to do a load, so I stick with top loaders these days

Nobody has top loaders in the UK do they? Do they even sell them?

Beck30 · 07/10/2020 12:00

Have you checked with family and friends (those who gave +ve reviews on it) if they are all stuck with long washing cycles? Maybe you have missed something in the settings?

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 07/10/2020 12:01

I have a Miele that weighs the load (up to 9kg) and adjusts the time and water consumption accordingly. It also has a twenty-minute wash, and auto plus which is about an hour. It also washes pillows brilliantly and has all sorts of settings that I have no need for like cashmere, and proofing wax jackets. It was bloody expensive though, thankfully I won it. But there are cheaper Miele models, I highly recommend the investment as they are meant to last ages too.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 07/10/2020 12:01

I'd send it back and get a cheap one from AO (really quick delivery) with a daily cycle and a 15 min quick wash. That's mostly what people need. I never use the settings on my machine which take 2hrs plus to do a cycle.

LadyWithTheNeonSparklers · 07/10/2020 12:01

I think my 9kg beko is couple of years old but 9kg mixed fabric wash at 40 takes about an hour an half - the daily quick - 15 minutes- and super short - 20 min- can't take a full load but some of the more expensive models could do those cycles with full loads.

Our first machine took 4 and half hours for normal cycle and I just couldn't keep on top of the washing - with five people and not leave it running while we were out.

unmarkedbythat · 07/10/2020 12:01

I got our washing machine in March and it has such a range of cycles, everything from a 15 minute quick wash to an apparently neverending cottons cycle. But usually I just use 'daily 60' and turn the temperature down from the preset 60 degrees to 30 or 40. Ours is Bush, 7kg load, 1200 spin and cost around £200 iirc. My mum has some super duper Miele one which cost a lot more and is no better!

fluffedup · 07/10/2020 12:02

There were some changes in the law that meant washing machine manufacturers found it difficult to comply without having ridiculously long wash cycles.
The Bosch washing machine that I bought mid 2019 was like this. I googled others at the time and they all seemed to have the same problem.
But there was an unrelated manufacturing fault in my machine and Bosch replaced it with the 2020 version of the same model. With this one, you can choose between 'eco' (takes ages) or not (more reasonable). It still takes longer than they used to though - I'm sure a standard wash about 15 years ago used to be less than an hour.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 07/10/2020 12:02

Forgot to add that a handwash setting is also useful for stuff you CBA to dry clean

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/10/2020 12:03

I have a 2 year old Bosch. It was reduced and I presume an older model. I use the easycare wash then reduce to 30 degrees for almost everything and it all comes out clean. Sometimes the machine flashes that the washing is too heavy ie a full load of towels. I just ignore and press start. This takes 1 hour 39.

If you can just ignore the weight and wash on the faster cycle, I would. I pretreat any stains so my clothes are generally only lightly soiled. Mine even washes dogs towels perfectly fine on this setting btw. Like hell am I going to wait 3-4 hours for every wash!
