New washing machine takes 4-5 hours to wash a full load, is this normal?

My old Bosch washing machine died after 15 years, so I bought a new Samsung 9 kg add wash one, after lots of positive reviews both on line and from family and friends. I tried my friends one which was 9kg and had a daily wash cycle and was really impressed. So we bought the latest model thinking thinking they would just have improved on the older model. How wrong we were. After it finally arrived (a whole other story), it has lots of different cycles but only 2 where you can use it for a 9kg load and they take 4-5+ hours and it doesn’t have the daily wash function. It does have a 15 minute one but you can only put in 2kg and it does a cold wash.

I’m not sure how it has a A+++ rating it takes hours to wash a normal family load. I’m not sure why they have a 9kg drum when most of the settings have a maximum of 4kg load. My old machine washed a load in about one hour. Is this normal in new machines?

I’m so disappointed it was quite expensive so I can’t even replace it. I only wanted a machine which would wash my clothes in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only had it just over a week and wish I’d gone for the older model with less options but a one hour daily wash.

To top it off the new Bosch dryer has decided it only want to dry shirts etc and anything like T-shirt’s come out damp no matter how many times you put them back in😬.

I want my old appliances back at least they washed everything in an hour and dried everything you put in there. Are new appliances just not as good?

I only ever buy the cheap washing machines myself. The companies (and there are far fewer of those than you think as many different "brands" are the same parent company, same as TVs and many other appliances) love to convince you of your need for all their bells and whistles that you'll never actually use or use for a bit when it's new/novel/oooh/ahhh before reverting to shoving almost everything in together on the one cycle you have found that works best for you. That is usually cotton wash and reduce the temperature down to 40/30 for me. Why pay a fortune if that's all you need, mine wasn't even £200.

My personal bug bear is that using less water is such a priority of legislators and manufacturers that you more often than not find modern machines don't use enough water to wash nor rinse properly. Pockets of dry soap powder and dry bits of fabric at the end of the wash are not rare, lots of posts on various online forums attest to this being a very common problem. I have to stand there pouring warm water down the drawer in order to get the cloths wet enough to come clean and I often have to rinse everything by hand again after they finish because I have contact dermatitis/excema and soap residue really sets it off to an NHS bothering level.

So the cheapest machine with decent reviews it is for me.

WankPuffins · 07/10/2020 12:47

Shit, I’ve never even looked at mine.

I just cram as much as possible in the drum and stick it on the 60 min wash Blush. Have done with every one I’ve ever had.

It was the cheapest one I could get out of Argos though, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

@ChocolateCherrybomb I know!

I often add a big 2 litre jug of water at various intervals to my machine.

I want a simple 40C 1 hour wash please that uses loads of water. Can someone do a washing machine with just 1 button that has this option for me?!

Chewbecca · 07/10/2020 12:50

That's annoying but easily resolved by putting on the night before on a timer so it ends when you are ready to get the washing out. Can you do this?

amusedbush · 07/10/2020 12:51

I have a 9kg Samsung washing machine but it has a daily wash setting which is about an hour. I tend to use that for our normal wash as nothing gets filthy, just general day to day wear. I also use the 15 minute 20 degree spin for a small load that just needs a rinse through.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 12:52

It has a sensor which weighs the load and automatically sets the time so you can’t overload. I bought it from Curry’s.

We have a 9kg Samsung ecobubble, we use the 30deg or 40deg synthetic wash most of the time with full loads, always comes out clean, no issues 2 years in.

It’s a 9kg eco bubble we have too that’s the worst machine ever. It doesn’t seem to put enough water in? If I try to use a synthetic wash then it gets things damp but doesn’t wash them. Socks smell, gym tops smell, We smell...

Iwasonceabrownie · 07/10/2020 12:55

Mine has a 30 minute and a 45 minute wash, for washing that just really needs freshening up and not really dirty, it washes at 30 degrees. My other ones I use are about 2 hours, which I think is still too long.

Flaunch · 07/10/2020 12:55

My Bosch has a water button for extra water. I tend to use it for bedding as otherwise some of it comes out still dry Confused

DoIneed1 · 07/10/2020 12:55

Napody 'I have the opposite problem with my Bosch- no separate spin cycle, only a 'rinse and spin'. As I dont have a tumble dryer this is really annoying as a second spin used to be handy before hanging it out to dry'

For my Bosch rinse and spin, in order to just spin I switch off the Aqua Plus button. Hope that helps!

IwishIwasyoda · 07/10/2020 12:55

I saved up and bought a miele washer and separate dryer. I bought the cheaper models with fewer programmes and they are absolutely fab. Longest programme cottons is about 3.5 hours which is fine. Dryer predicts a time but adjusts as it goes along so is often shorter. No way would I buy any other brand after this

isthismylifenow · 07/10/2020 12:57

I just posted today on another thread about how much I hated my new Samsung and I ended up buying a marked down Miele (I had a Miele prior to the Samsung). And the reason was the long washing cycle.

So I am back to my 30 minute washes which cleans everyday clothes perfectly. I do my laundry in a morning, as opposed to all day with the Samsung.

I sold my Samsung on Marketplace and used the money to pay off the Miele that I found a few weeks later.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 12:58

The friends and family who recommended the Samsung all bought theirs about 3-4 years ago and I tried it too, I was really impressed but they all had the daily wash function (1 hour). The new model I bought didn’t have any reviews yet as it’s just come onto the market, I just wrongly assumed it would be better.

@RaisinGhost

How annoying! Is it a front loader? I've found they take an unusually long time to do a load, so I stick with top loaders these days.
Where did you find a top loader? I miss mine.
nightmareneighbour · 07/10/2020 13:04

"WTF does a washing machine need wifi for? To keep it entertained while it takes 4 hours to do a wash?"

:) classic :)

Nat6999 · 07/10/2020 13:06

There should be a button to shorten the programme. My Bosch should take2 hours 40 to do a 90 degree wash but I can shorten the cycle to 1 hour 50.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 07/10/2020 13:07

Another vote for the £200 off Bekos here. I got one with added cover for another £100 which covers it for anything. Still considably cheaper than more prestige brands but reliable and user friendly Smile

JorisBonson · 07/10/2020 13:08

@Shopaholic100 I have the same machine.

Daily wash with the heavy stain and bubble soak buttons takes 1.42 and comes out perfect.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 13:09

😂 hilarious! Maybe it’s spending it’s time on mumsnet. It has a laundry menu so you can set the cycle from your phone and check how long until it finishes and it tells you when it’s finished, just in case you’ve missed the music from the machine.

OP posts:
Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 13:11

JorisBonson mine doesn’t have the daily wash setting only the 15 minute setting.

OP posts:
PearlyPear · 07/10/2020 13:11

My Miele is 1hr 35 for a full load cotton (either 60 or 90 degrees) cycle. It has a 40 degrees 30 min economy/quick wash setting for clothes that need freshening more than cleaning of grubby marks.

randomer · 07/10/2020 13:12

I have a 30 minute 30 degree wash , which I use most of the time. I know people are fond of the hotter, longer wash but it suits me fine.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 13:14

I miss my shorter washes.

Sorry, my fault for not RTFT!
