New washing machine takes 4-5 hours to wash a full load, is this normal?

My old Bosch washing machine died after 15 years, so I bought a new Samsung 9 kg add wash one, after lots of positive reviews both on line and from family and friends. I tried my friends one which was 9kg and had a daily wash cycle and was really impressed. So we bought the latest model thinking thinking they would just have improved on the older model. How wrong we were. After it finally arrived (a whole other story), it has lots of different cycles but only 2 where you can use it for a 9kg load and they take 4-5+ hours and it doesn’t have the daily wash function. It does have a 15 minute one but you can only put in 2kg and it does a cold wash.

I’m not sure how it has a A+++ rating it takes hours to wash a normal family load. I’m not sure why they have a 9kg drum when most of the settings have a maximum of 4kg load. My old machine washed a load in about one hour. Is this normal in new machines?

I’m so disappointed it was quite expensive so I can’t even replace it. I only wanted a machine which would wash my clothes in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only had it just over a week and wish I’d gone for the older model with less options but a one hour daily wash.

To top it off the new Bosch dryer has decided it only want to dry shirts etc and anything like T-shirt’s come out damp no matter how many times you put them back in😬.

I want my old appliances back at least they washed everything in an hour and dried everything you put in there. Are new appliances just not as good?

The ratings for efficiency are based on the standard 40C wash. They all take forever now.

Have you any others to choose from?

My meile is much faster on the 60 wash, and any of those alternative washes where it is supposed to work out what is in it and sort it out for itself. The dark/jeans wash is particularly fast.

Mrstwiddle · 07/10/2020 14:14

I have a top loader (not in U.K.) and it’s great, there are I think 3 options of light/med/heavy load, whites/colours/mixed and cotton/wool. I just absolutely love the simplicity.

@Coughsyrupsucks

Oh crap, I wish I’d seen this a few hours ago. Guess what we ordered an hour ago. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though, at least I’ll be expecting it to not work like my old one now.
Aren't you tempted to amend the order after reading this thread?
isthismylifenow · 07/10/2020 14:18

@ChillerKillerCroissant

I think I have your machine's sulky sibling as a dishwasher OP - it cleans dishes well but I use a lower temp and press the turbo button to get the run time down to 1hr 40mins, the eco setting takes 3 hours to do a load of dishes (Miele) whereas the Cheapo Beko it replaced could wash and dry the dishes in 60 minutes.

You've certainly given me some pointers for when my washing machine needs replacing and I'll be checking the programme times carefully, I hope some of the manufacturers take note of this thread - the price of progress eh? Hmm A washing machine that can only run one load a day isn't that useful!

I have the same dishwasher and I can do 4 clothes loads in the time it takes this to do one eco wash....

I too am a fan of the turbo button.

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 14:18

Coughsyrupsucks Which one did you order?

Coughsyrupsucks · 07/10/2020 14:26

@isthismylifenow I can’t DH put in a next day delivery order when I was out earlier because my washing machine died yesterday. Also that would involve admitting I was wrong Grin

Coughsyrupsucks · 07/10/2020 14:27

@Shopaholic100 We’ve ordered the Samsung WW10N645RBW so I’m going to have to figure out which is the quickest wash when I get it Smile

adagio · 07/10/2020 14:29

We had an LG one - 2012 model, but it’s bearings went a couple of months ago so we replaced with Samsung eco bubble. By contrast, Samsung is noisier and takes longer. On both machines I always just chose a programme that looked like it took a reasonable length of time adding an extra rinse if I feel like it. Totally ignore the ‘dark/sports/synthetics etc’ titles just go on time. Also, ignore weight limit....
Mostly seems to come out clean 😂
Strangely the old LG seemed to weigh stuff (dud a dash-dash thinking thing at the start of a run) but the Samsung doesn’t - regardless of what programme or amount of washing the time looks the same. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.
Miss my old LG.

perfumeistooexpensive · 07/10/2020 14:29

My Bosch does a 15 minute at 30 degrees or a 20 minute cycle at 40 degrees which is the one I use almost all the time. Everything is perfectly clean. I can do the entire family wash in an hour. I love it.

adagio · 07/10/2020 14:30

Oh and LG you could pause and add stuff as the door lock turned off if it didn’t have water in it (sensor). Samsung once it’s decided it’s licked that’s it. Right pain in the butt.

SallySeven · 07/10/2020 14:34

I'd go back to a simpler machine If I could.l
The ancient twin tub of my childhood was more user friendly than the current machine we have.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 07/10/2020 14:41

I have a Bosch....it has a 1 hour wash at 40 degrees or a 15 minute quick wash...these are the only 2 cycles i use....its a fab machine and i dread the day it gives up the ghost.

earthyfire · 07/10/2020 14:54

I have an AEG and wash cycles are long but if I press the wash cycle button twice I can shorten the cycle time length. I would never get through my washing if I kept the wash cycle to 4 hours!

Coughsyrupsucks · 07/10/2020 15:15

@Shopaholic100 I have just checked the model I ordered has a 15 min speed wash an a super fast one so fingers crossed it’ll be ok

Shopaholic100 · 07/10/2020 15:22

I hope so, the super fast setting sounds promising. At least yours has reviews.

Derelictwreck · 07/10/2020 15:42

OP this sounds daft but have you checked the instructions? The ones for your model says it has a 55min 5kg function.

ChillerKillerCroissant · 07/10/2020 15:52

We had a twin tub, I remember it as being unreliable tbh! As a kid, I was thrilled to receive a toy twin tub machine that worked, could only wash doll clothes in it as the drums were tiny.

@isthismylifenow have you ever tried the glasses programme on the dishwasher? I should try it myself because I think that one might only be 30 mins to see how well it cleans. I very rarely use it without the turbo button! Or my ideal combo - short glasses programme with turbo button, blink and it's done - we can dream Grin

AriettyHomily · 07/10/2020 16:22

My samsung looooooooong wash is 2 hrs

SallySeven · 07/10/2020 16:34

Our twin tub was reliable and quick though it needed the swap over to the spinner of course.
It was hard on clothes though. I do love the wool wash on.modetn machines.

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 07/10/2020 16:37

My AEG has the same "feature" as lots of others; only cottons can have max weight and max spin etc.., but although it might bleep if you put more than 4kg on a mixed wash, it will do it. There's a warning that you may get less perfect results, but my stuff usually isn't dirty enough to notice. There's also a time saver option which can be used twice, but if I'm using detergent, I don't want to shorten the rinse. If I'm using an Ecoegg, it's fine.

ScouseQueen · 07/10/2020 16:42

I've got a Bosch that replaced our previous Bosch about two years ago - that one had lasted over a decade. Think I must have bought just before all this set in as the 40 degree wash is just over an hour and you can trim that to 45 mins. The quick wash is 30 mins or 15 minutes if you are really stuck. Cotton cycle is nearly 3 hours BUT the quick version is 1 hour. Like @Mummyoflittledragon and others though, I've found it's really hard to find out the length of a wash cycle now! Seems almost like shops know you won't like the answer.

123456abcd · 07/10/2020 16:43

I have a Samsung 8kg, it's brilliant. I only ever use the daily wash cycle (1 hour 5 mins), I didn't even realise it had a supposed weight limit - I just shove everything in and it washes really well!

Sgtmajormummy · 07/10/2020 17:12

I bought this Candy 9kg 1400 spin machine in September because I did NOT want a machine making noise in my kitchen and taking three hours a day to do a wash!

It has a variety of short (39 or 59’) programs BUT like a PP’s Bosch it doesn’t have a “Spin Only” option Confused.

I’m not particularly impressed as the quick options really are for light dirt. The full cotton cycle takes nearly 4 hours and that’s what gets it the A+++ rating as it soaks rather than boils!

Kpo58 · 07/10/2020 17:25

I find it ironic that washing machines were invented so that it didn't take all day washing clothes and now we are back at the start, taking all day (if not longer) to do the laundry.

it still takes minutes to load and unload. I can do whatever I want/need to whilst the machine does it's thing. I don't need to chain myself and not leave it's side.
