New washing machine takes 4-5 hours to wash a full load, is this normal?

My old Bosch washing machine died after 15 years, so I bought a new Samsung 9 kg add wash one, after lots of positive reviews both on line and from family and friends. I tried my friends one which was 9kg and had a daily wash cycle and was really impressed. So we bought the latest model thinking thinking they would just have improved on the older model. How wrong we were. After it finally arrived (a whole other story), it has lots of different cycles but only 2 where you can use it for a 9kg load and they take 4-5+ hours and it doesn’t have the daily wash function. It does have a 15 minute one but you can only put in 2kg and it does a cold wash.

I’m not sure how it has a A+++ rating it takes hours to wash a normal family load. I’m not sure why they have a 9kg drum when most of the settings have a maximum of 4kg load. My old machine washed a load in about one hour. Is this normal in new machines?

I’m so disappointed it was quite expensive so I can’t even replace it. I only wanted a machine which would wash my clothes in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve only had it just over a week and wish I’d gone for the older model with less options but a one hour daily wash.

To top it off the new Bosch dryer has decided it only want to dry shirts etc and anything like T-shirt’s come out damp no matter how many times you put them back in😬.

I want my old appliances back at least they washed everything in an hour and dried everything you put in there. Are new appliances just not as good?
@unmarkedbythat turns out washing machines are way worse than tumble driers. Never run anything if you’re not home www.ific.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Home-Laundry-Fire-Risks-Jan-18.pdf
Thank you! Genuinely- I really did not know that at all and am very grateful to be told :)

I will absolutely never be even remotely tempted to buy a washing machine or dryer with WiFi!! Why?

Mine has WiFi (I didn't choose it for that!) and I can see how long it has left to run from the hammock in the garden (not that useful at the moment, obviously). I believe I can also control it from my phone which is only useful given I have to set it to do its fast Spin cycle after the wash has finished (Although I have never got it to work). On all other occasions I am actually at the bloody machine and can use the buttons.

@Thethingswedoforlove

Is there a deeper (hidden)? filter that needs cleaning for the tumble drier to work better?
No, I’ve only had it about 2 weeks and I empty the filter and water tank after each use. I called Bosch today they’ve told me to change the fine adjust setting and seeing if that helps or they’ll send out an engineer. I’ve put a load in now, so 🤞.

I wouldn't choose a machine for that either. I'm pretty sure that it would be one of those things that I would consider a gimmick and would in the end hardly use.

I'd like a hammock in the garden though! 😎 When the weather is right, of course.

😮 at the fire risk from washing machines!! I didn't know that either. They shouldn't really sell ones with timers then should they?

I never have mine on when I'm not in due to a disaster in our old house - not a fire, but what was essentially a flood. The sensor thing that tells it to stop filling up bust while we were out for the afternoon. Never had any problems previously but the fucking thing just endlessly filled up for 5 hours which, by the time we got back, meant it had been pishing out water for that entire time.

kittykat35 · 08/10/2020 18:54

I don't know why people are so shocked at the fire risk from washing machines. Fridges are just as risky and we have them on 24/7!! Nobody gives those a second thought though. Hmm

Cantbreathe2020 · 08/10/2020 21:20

@Dontfuckingsaycheese

Have you actually weighed your washing? I did and it didn't weigh anywhere near what I thought!
The weight refers to WET clothes not dry
Topseyt · 08/10/2020 21:24

I don't understand why people are so shocked when told about the fire risk posed by washing machines. They contain powerful heaters and electric motors. The water is obviously in close proximity to these.

unmarkedbythat · 08/10/2020 22:47

I suppose I think of tumble dryers as more creating the conditions for a fire- hot, dry, lots of fabric to catch light- and because washing machines contain water and wet laundry, it seemed in my mind less likely to burn. Idk. I'm not even looking up fridge fire risk as referenced above, that would finish me off tonight.

I have a hisense ( cheao make i think ) it only takes 7 kgs though
But a mix 40 wash is 58 mins a 60 degree wash close on 2 hrs
Also has loads of other settings but i mainly use this
I did have one bosch one larger drum that used to take ages and one of reasons buying this was foe the hr wash ( i assume i can fill it for this one - never read manual properly but the clothes come out clean ) the only thing is it probably won't last as long as my bosh but then was half the price
I found doing larger 9 kg loads left me with too much to dry in winter anyway

user1471538283 · 09/10/2020 08:11

Oh my goodness I thought an hour for a 60 degree wash was alot! But then despite our washer (LG) being marketed as quiet it is not. It does have a 40 degree quick wash for 45 minutes. When I get a new one I want it to be quiet!

goingtotown · 09/10/2020 08:28

I’m very happy with my 6 month Hotpoint.
1400 spin, 30 minute quick wash, 60 minute Anti stain, temperature & spin can be adjusted, very quiet.

Suzi888 · 09/10/2020 08:30

We have Hotpoint there’s a 30 min and one hour cycle then 3/4 hours.

MollyButton · 09/10/2020 17:07

My last Bosch lasted 17 years or so. My new one has a "night" mode - does that still mean it shouldn't run over night.

I do think Bosch tend to build their machines to separate out the parts likely to cause fires eg. the lint in Tumble driers is totally isolated from the motor or other bits that get hot - which is how the Hotpoint fires started.

And for fire precautions having working smoke detectors is a top priority.

woodhill · 09/10/2020 18:42

My LG is fairly quiet

NigellaAwesome · 09/10/2020 20:28

@Shopaholic100

seeing if that helps or they’ll send out an engineer. I’ve put a load in now, so

Noooo!!!

I didn’t know that, thanks for letting me know.

Well the suggestion by Bosch seems to have worked for a full load and all the clothes came out dry! When only put a few in 2 dresses they came out dryer than before but not fully dry, Is this normal?

MollyButton · 11/10/2020 12:22

If you aren't drying much I'd bung in a towel - it helps things dry. Otherwise talk to Bosch again.

TherapyClient · 11/10/2020 13:52

What's the fine adjust setting op?

DilysPrice · 11/10/2020 15:18

The Fine Adjust setting is the thing I was banging on about - it’s the magic combination of buttons which tells modern tumble dryers to dry the washing completely rather than just more or less dry. Each brand calls it something different, which is why I didn’t know it was called Fine Adjust for Bosch, but if you search in the manual, probably under Trouble Shooting you will find it.

Shopaholic100 · 14/10/2020 16:52

Fine adjust is the button which adjusts the heat level, 1 sun is light drying (default setting), 2 sun icons = medium heat and 3 is the highest which should completely dry your load, this has worked as long as you put in a full load.
