How on earth have I got to my mid 30s and never noticed this before? I only know now because it was pointed out to me!

Put your thumb and little finger together and flex your wrist slightly towards you. See the long, hard thing sticking out from your wrist going down your arm? That's it! Some people don't have it at all and some seemingly only have 1. I just can't believe I've never noticed I only had 1 before now.

If you have no idea what I'm on about google it and you'll know from the pics. Quite a fascinating little muscle and what they can use it for if necessary during surgery on the rest of your body.

Oh I love random facts like this!
I think I have 2 but one is thick and one is thin Confused.

Pamelaaaaa · 28/09/2020 21:13

Ooo it gets weirder! It's my left that has it too, not my right, yet I'm right handed.

Two here. Have you been watching Only Connect?

Pamelaaaaa · 28/09/2020 21:13

Only connect?? No but I'm off to Google it.

I'm pretty sure I have 2. I can see one clearly, the other is quite hard to see but I can feel it.

BurtonHouse · 28/09/2020 21:15

Ooh I've got one on my right but not my left. How have I lived this long and never noticed??

Prettybluepigeons · 28/09/2020 21:16

One here

Howmanysleepsnow · 28/09/2020 21:16

I have 2 equal on the left, and 2 on the right if I feel for it, but one is much smaller.

mamapants · 28/09/2020 21:17

I don't think I have one. Shock

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 28/09/2020 21:17

I've got one on my left but not my right.

Can't believe I have never noticed before😳

ScrambledSmegs · 28/09/2020 21:17

Ooh I just flexed and twisted my left wrist and it popped out! How funny. It was practically invisible before.

Imissmoominmama · 28/09/2020 21:18

I have two!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/09/2020 21:20

Nothing at all sticking out on either arm. I’m going to accost DH or one of the DC and check them out.

I can bend my little finger independently of my ring finger, but only on my left hand.

user127819 · 28/09/2020 21:21

Apparently 14% of people don't have one?

TimeStoleMyYouth · 28/09/2020 21:21

I have two!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/09/2020 21:24

Two on my left and one on my right.
Didn't even know they / it had a name!

Pamelaaaaa · 28/09/2020 21:24

All these weirdos with missing muscles that had no idea Grin
And what's with some of you saying you have 2 in one arm?? Maybe that's why some of us don't have both Wink

2 here, I am very symmetrical in the palmaris longus department.
Shame my face isn't -i am soooo unsymmetrical and therefore un-photogenic in the face department.

goose1964 · 28/09/2020 21:28

I have one on each arm, but the one on the right seems to be a J shape

BrennieGirl · 28/09/2020 21:33

I don’t have any. I discovered this after injuring my hand a few years ago. The surgeon wanted to use the tendon to help repair my hand but couldn’t.

Apparently it’s a throwback to when we were all swinging in trees. So people without it are more evolved. That’s what I like to think anyway 🤪.

KrakowDawn · 28/09/2020 21:33

I have one on each arm. Is there a chance the other is hidden behind some other muscle/sinew/bone etc and doesn't show?
How can people have a different number of them.

Catiopea · 28/09/2020 21:41

I’ve two on each arm, like Brennie says about her surgeon they are apparently handy as ‘spare parts’ pretty sure it was QI or OC that I heard about them on too.

TaxTheRatFarms · 28/09/2020 21:53

I have this! But I think I’m genuinely really unevolved as I have really long grippy toes (for climbing trees, like my palmaris longus muscle!) and my ear visibly twitches if there’s a loud bang beside or behind me. Also I’m quite short with long arms and legs and pretty hairy so if you dropped me in a chimp colony they’d just be like “alright Dave” and accept me as one of their own.

Please tell me I’m not alone?? Grin

DivGirl · 28/09/2020 21:55

Eh, you probably just don't have either of them. They allow us to retract our claws, except we don't have claws so you're not missing out on much.

Feel free to use it as a fun fact at office "icebreakers".

megletthesecond · 28/09/2020 22:01

Two in both hands.

I can still do monkey bars at the age of 46 Grin 🐒. You might be right @brenniegirl
