How on earth have I got to my mid 30s and never noticed this before? I only know now because it was pointed out to me!

Put your thumb and little finger together and flex your wrist slightly towards you. See the long, hard thing sticking out from your wrist going down your arm? That's it! Some people don't have it at all and some seemingly only have 1. I just can't believe I've never noticed I only had 1 before now.

If you have no idea what I'm on about google it and you'll know from the pics. Quite a fascinating little muscle and what they can use it for if necessary during surgery on the rest of your body.

Two on the left arm, one on the right. I don't know if it's important, but I am 78, and have lived without two on both arms all this time.

Peachbubble · 29/09/2020 06:46

I don't have any.

Witchend · 29/09/2020 07:10

I have 2 on each arm. They're quite obvious even without bending my wrist but if I loose weight they're very obvious.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 29/09/2020 07:13

i cant see my right one but i am right handed

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/09/2020 07:18

Can't find any...

I do have very flexible wrists, and they are a bit week. I struggle with push ups and pull ups, and chest presses, even when I could lift quite heavy weights in other positions.

StillMedusa · 29/09/2020 09:13

Two on the left arm one on the right.. I now need to check the whole family Grin

Seriously79 · 29/09/2020 09:29

I'm not sure I even have one 🤔 what are you talking about ?

Gingernaut · 29/09/2020 10:13

Bring your little finger and thumb together and properly 'strain' like you're lifting weights.

Your palmaris longus will 'pop' up, like a hard string.

If you can't see anything and have to feel for it, it's probably absent.

That muscle you feel for is the flexor carpi radialis.

I appear to have 2 in my left arm and one in my right. I’m left handed though so it could be that the ones in my left hand are more developed so stick out more?

TheFatBottomLine · 29/09/2020 10:27

I don't appear to have one in either arm Hmm

Gingernaut · 29/09/2020 21:26

There's only one palmaris longus per arm, if you have one.

The other muscle you can feel is the flexor carpi radialis

JacobReesMogadishu · 29/09/2020 21:41

I also have a Darwin tubercle on one ear.

EspressoX10 · 29/09/2020 21:56

I have none on both arms.

EspressoX10 · 29/09/2020 21:57

I have none on both arms and no wisdom teeth. Clearly an evolved specimen (ahem)

Oldraver · 29/09/2020 21:57

I dont have any either

Frunkle · 29/09/2020 22:07

I have only one.

One of my DC has only one. The other DC has two. Their dad has two (the ape).

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/09/2020 22:24

I don't have anything stick up when I do that at all. On either arm. I'm so weak in my arms and wrists is this related? @Gingernaut you seem to know about this! Is this related to my weakness?!

CormoranStrike · 29/09/2020 22:29

Two on the left, one on the right

TildaKauskumholm · 29/09/2020 22:36

I have a book on Trigger Point Therapy, and am always amazed when I read about various parts of our anatomy and the frequent mentions of such things as the OP says. I had always thought we all had exactly the same muscles.

Gingernaut · 29/09/2020 22:38

Nope. The palmaris longus is redundant.

As stated upthread, sometimes surgeons 'borrow' it to repair other muscles and are suprised when it's missing.

Haybo26 · 29/09/2020 22:38

Oh so I'm just a weakling?! I had a whole few mins of thinking I'd found the reason! Grin

Thanks though
CorianderLord · 29/09/2020 23:16

I have two of equal size - one on each wrist. I can see them clearly without flexing Blush Also have four wisdom teeth. Clearly an ape.

And if I do flex, three things pop out? What's the third?

CorianderLord · 29/09/2020 23:17

Excuse my wrinkly hand that I now realise looks a bit like a penis. Sorry.

ClinkyMonkey · 30/09/2020 00:05

Just one here, on my right wrist. Fascinating! I'm willing one to appear on the left wrist because that sort of asymmetry really annoys me.Grin
