Curry I hope you do not mind?
I put the last message in, and didn't find a new thread. Which I found disquiting, so to calm my nerves here goes.

Another fruitless training day, now I have to go to the milk machine as DS someone has used all the milk.

amieejust · 08/10/2020 16:26

@SallySeven

So sorry for your disappointment *@amieejust*.
@SallySeven thank you.
MissConductUS · 08/10/2020 16:34

@amieejust - I'm so sorry to hear the job opportunity fell through. My DH works in IT and due to outsourcing and recessions has had to look for work a number of times over our marriage. The job-hunting process is full of false starts and dead ends. You just have to slog through it and stay hopeful. He has generally wound up in better situations and I hope that is true for yours too.

@kitschplease - I think I went a bit overboard yesterday posting on Jaffa cakes. Amazon does have them for sale in the US but they are crazy expensive and mostly come in huge boxes. I'm going to check the international section of my supermarket and see if they're there.

We Facetimed with DS last night to discuss the change in his uni's semester end calendar and what it means for Thanksgiving. He really wants to come home for it. It's just so much driving (400 miles round trip) if we pick him up on a Wednesday and then have to take him back the following Sunday. He has a car up there but he's not a confident highway driver and it's a long, complicated drive with lots of road changes. There will also be massive traffic on the roads because of the holiday. No decisions were made but at least we're thinking about the options.

Lovely fall weather here. Lots of drama about the election and covid of course. @giletrouge I'm regularly suprised on MN about how much people in the UK follow American politics. I went to bed early and skipped the debate. When there are elections in the UK people here are generally aware of them but they don't tend to get a lot of detailed coverage in the news media. I read The Economist so tend to follow UK politics more than most Americans, but I don't tend to get excited about it.

giletrouge · 08/10/2020 16:53

@MissConductUS I think I can begin to explain that, in a vastly encapsulated and over-simplified way. I'm 65, and for the whole of my life I've been told and observed that the world is divided and conflicted and that the US is one of two superpowers, the other being Russia. The US president is regularly refered to as 'the leader of the free world' and 'the most powerful man on the planet'. Anyone who isn't myopic and parochial therefore would at the very least take quite a strong interest in who you guys elect, let alone now. And our media, trust me, is obsessed with your president and your election.
Personally I think the US is not what it was (I do not mean the people, I mean geo-politically) and of course globally all the power bases are much more diverse and shifting, but a strong and liberal leader in the states is still something that would be a force for immense good in the world, and therefore your election is very important.

Whereas the UK is maybe a bit of a busted flush right now and looking a bit small, and I can't imagine, if I were an American, I'd take much notice of our elections either.

Anyway, back to quiet, dull, unexciting news (I hope I haven't raised anyone's blood pressure, I just wanted to give you an answer).
I'm just off to pop two chicken legs in the oven for mine and DH's dinner.

BaldAndWild · 08/10/2020 17:11

Cowboys and aliens!
I remember telling a colleague about it and they said that it sounded "too far-fetched".
I wasn't sure how to respond to that.

I've been watching money heist instead of applying for jobs. Tomorrow I will, I promise myself.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/10/2020 17:19

Just back home from work - and got wet on my way home.
DH wanted to visit his aunt in her care home at the end of the month, but as he is now coming from a high risk area, they won't let him in. So he'll return a day early.

Off work tomorrow, so I can avoid the strike action by staying home.

KoalaRabbit · 08/10/2020 18:05

Just phoned doctor and they think kidney infection is back and are doing 4th course of antibiotics. DH just fetching them now.

Kids back from school. DH went to sleep earlier and cat was very cross and sad and howled for the first half hour of his sleep. But she also did some howls in the night to get him to see her so he had quite broken sleep.

Aimee So sorry about the job situation. I had to stop work in March when schools went out, kids went back in September but so many been sent home not really viable to work with SN child. It must be really hard when its both of you, my DHs job is safe thankfully. Hope you get something soon.

DH was supposed to go to see estate agent today in old town but stayed with me as I'm not well.

FawnDrench · 08/10/2020 18:08

@giletrouge - what a simply wonderful phrase "busted flush" is - I haven't heard it for ages!
I'm going to try my damnedest to slip it into a conversation this weekend.

DH has gone to do something in the garage with a bandsaw.

I can see some attractive-looking clouds out the window but have no idea which type they are as I'm insufficiently knowledgeable about nephology.

MissConductUS · 08/10/2020 18:41

I watched Cowboys and Aliens a few years ago on Netflix I think. It was great fun and even an older Harrison Ford makes my knees wobble a bit. I just checked on Netflix and it's no longer on there and Amazon Prime wants $3.99 to rent it. Greedy bastards. Smile

@KoalaRabbit They really should take a urine sample and identify the bacteria before prescribing an antibiotic, and they should do that every time it happens. If they're just shooting in the dark I'm not surprised it's recurring.

@giletrouge thanks for the insights into your interest. I have peeked at the endless Trump threads on MN and mostly they seem steeped in schadenfreude about what a rubbish president we have. They have a point but seem a bit overly gleeful about it so I've never posted on those thread. Trump is toast. He's down 16% in the national polls and that's a hole he'll never climb out of.

I had a lovely walk at lunchtime and some leftover takeaway for lunch. We're all voting by mail this year and DS's ballot is due to arrive in the post today, so I'll repost it to him tomorrow.

We had our master bath shower redone over the summer. It's now like a posh hotel shower with a fancy hand shower and two big shampoo niches in the wall. They're coming tomorrow with the glass shower door. I'm so pleased with it. It's like an everyday luxury now. We've been making do with a shower curtain on a tension rod up until now.

soddingkitten · 08/10/2020 18:54

Trump is toast. He's down 16% in the national polls and that's a hole he'll never climb out of.

That’s such cheering news. Thank you. I will keep everything crossed.

Does anyone know if pesto is OK for cats? Sodding found the empty tub, knocked off the counter and is chasing it around the kitchen floor with his tongue. I could take it away, but its leaving us to eat in peace. 🎉

I’m trying to get enthused about going for a walk. Meh. I hate this time of year.

cheeseychovolate · 08/10/2020 19:03

My toilet is still blocked!
It drains very slowly, not sure how to sort it out!

MissConductUS · 08/10/2020 19:18

sodding take away the pesto if it contains garlic, which is not good for cats.

Predicting elections in the US is tricky because of the electoral college. The Economist has an excellent model they update regularly that you can follow.

projects.economist.com/us-2020-forecast/president

The only downside is that he'll move back to New York when they boot his arse out of the White House. Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/10/2020 19:18

Cheesey
Our blockage went with buckets of really hot water and time (I already had my spiral out but it wasn't needed).

DH confessed that yesterday when he did the taxes he thought tidying up the papers in his office would be a good idea. The thought vanished when he pressed send.

M & S usually have cranberry Jaffa cakes at Christmas, just for a delicious change.
Cowboys and Aliens is a fun movie.
Our new guttering appears to have passed the 'downpour' test.
I bought some new slippers today but had to take them off as my feet were too warm!

ScaramoucheFandango · 08/10/2020 19:23

UK GPs don't seem to test in the same way that some other nations doctors do.

ScaramoucheFandango · 08/10/2020 19:23

We are watching cycling on TV. It's not gripping.

Squirrel26 · 08/10/2020 19:30

I washed two of the door mats yesterday. Got them out of the machine, hung them up, pottered around doing things.

Then I noticed the washing liquid thing, which I had poured washing liquid into...and left on the side by the washing machine. I did remember to add the antibacterial stuff though, so I suppose they might have come out slightly cleaner than they went in.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/10/2020 19:38

Why do you antibac door mats? I have noticed people on mumsnet antibaccing things a lot.

The last flower of my hibiskus plant has faded, it's just green now. But a pretty dark green Smile

Squirrel26 · 08/10/2020 19:51

I'm not really sure why. I have got it into my head that my laundry needs EXTRA cleaning. Possibly I read somewhere that lower temperature washes don't really clean things. More likely I've just fallen for the advertising.

In other news, I moved my patio table and chairs about two metres to the right. Patio now looks about twice the size it did before.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/10/2020 19:58

Yes, you are right, rooms (no patio here) look bigger when you move the furniture about. When we suddenly all had to work from home I created work space for 4 people by moving a few Kallax and Ivar sets about. It was the day our w-lan decided to be lan only and I just managed to get 4 lan cables of sufficient length.

@MissConductUS and @KoalaRabbit thank you...it's so hard and soul destroying too. We used to have a great life and lifestyle Sad Will probably start a separate post sometime soon.

giletrouge · 08/10/2020 20:20

@FawnDrench busted flush is great isn't it? You can come back and tell us how you introduced it into a conversation.
MissConductUS let's hope for all of our sakes that Trump is toast. I remember vividly the night he was elected because my DH slept through it all blissfully predicting that he could not win, and I had to wake him with the news which seemed barely credible at the time. I'm a news watcher which is why this thread is so restful for me. And now I've spoilt it. Apologies.

So resolutely back to calm mundaneity - I am having my second alcoholic drink this week, which is masses for me - a nice glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Most of the rest of my Amazon order turned up - so they've sent five things in three parcels two of which came on the same day. I don't think the human race knows how to organise itself. But I can talk, my DH is fond of saying that I'm feral (but then he's anal, so we really are alien to each other Grin).

giletrouge · 08/10/2020 20:23

@amieejust I hope things look up for you and yours soon. Flowers
