Just trying to live a meaningful life in an increasingly bizarre world in which nothing makes sense any more.

@Thanksitsgotpockets places have to provide an alternative to the app ie pen and paper. I will not download the app and have asked to physically sign in several times now. But you're also right that you know pretty much straight away what the experience is going to be like by how you're greeted.

Rules + attitude = experience.

Can't do anything about the first but companies can do lots about the second and they are the ones who will do well out of this.

WouldBeGood · 02/10/2020 09:55

*Just to be clear, he, and I, do obey the rules and this is general lecturing to the class. Lest I be misunderstood.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 02/10/2020 09:55

The first restaurant is a good walk from the carpark and I've often done it on my own to meet friends. Last night I was glad I was with my husband. The town was dead apart from men wandering around in the dark in masks. That would have been really scary and intimidating on my own.
As the nights draw in, is it going to feel harder for women in particular to be out and about trying to get on with life?

Thanksitsgotpockets · 02/10/2020 09:57

@Orangeblossom7777

Interesting that view on masks from the bear grillys man person, DS says he doesn't mind wearing one 'it is a minor inconvenience to me' he said. However we are all different and some find things harder than others.. here the school is in charge of enforcing mask wearing and provides them..
My husband says he doesn't mind wearing one and just pretend he's going in to raid the shop. When I wear one, the floor starts to move like those old lifts that you had to open and close the doors on yourself, that used to bounce about a bit before settling whenever they stopped at a floor.

Vent away that's very worrying. I hope they get thier act together.

I had that when my dad was in hosp. Lack of communication, lies and shit care, messed up his meds. He went in with a UTI and came out off his legs completely with severe confusion and hallucinations straight into a nursing home. Utterly useless in every respect of his care i was gobsmacked at thier attitude.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 02/10/2020 10:02

IBake, yes, we were asked would we download the app and said no, we'd be happy to just give them our details for them to record manually and we were told this was not possible.
Second restaurant took details as we ordered without making it into a big production.

countrygirl99 · 02/10/2020 10:03

Its heartbreaking to see so many elderly issues not dealt with properly 'cos Covid. Just had a call from DH who, coincidentally has been talking to a senior administrator at the hospital my dad has been pinged out of 3 times in the last few weeks. They have not had a single case in the hospital in all that time. Now my dad is finally kept in and is being properly investigated they are discovering the causes of his problems and it's too late. So Mr high and mighty teacher man, you can stick your opinions where the sun don't shine because attitudes like yours are killing grandparents.

That's truly awful I hope they are doing everything to fix his problems now. I would write and complain the more people who do that at this time the quicker this shitshow will end.

110APiccadilly · 02/10/2020 10:11

Hmm, I wouldn't want someone who thinks the attitude of, "This law is stupid or incorrect, but I will obey it out of respect for the rule of law," is not acceptable teaching my kids.

Freedom to disagree is a fundamental part of democracy.

Ibake · 02/10/2020 10:11

Ironically @Thanksitsgotpockets in that case they are then actually the ones breaking rules/guidelines/law - whatever it is that governs this country these days!

But it's their choice, their books will soon tell them if their policy decision is wrong. And a business policy decision is all that it is.

Sorry for those of you that are going through things with your DPs, I've been there too, it's so difficult Thanks

Grr.. Was supposed to be on holiday in Italy at the end of October - a last taste of normality and warmth before the winter closes in. Only yesterday Easyjet cancelled all flights from my local airport to anywhere in Italy. I did a quick scan through where they were still flying to, took out all of the ones which required a test in advance or quarantine on the way back, and was basically left with Berlin. Don't want to go to Berlin, and there also seems a fairly high chance that Germany will place restrictions on travellers from the UK fairly soon. So, no holiday, and a real feeling that the world is closing in...

amicissimma · 02/10/2020 10:23

I've wondered for some time now what goes on in the minds of people who post their usually poorly-thought-out but strongly-held views on threads where they're irrelevant.

It was a big thing over Brexit of course, some people just popped up on every thread, destroying ones where an opposing view and interesting information was managing to get an airing. But it's also a thing on religious threads, where someone will be asking for advice on some aspect of their faith and one of these know-it-alls has to crash in and opine that anyone who believes in God is stupid; which adds nothing to the thread. Why not start a thread outlining the advantages of atheism if you think it valuable, rather than making a nasty atmosphere where someone is looking for help?

'Shut up, you're stupid' does not win arguments. Although know I'm preaching to the converted on this thread. Just wanted to vent.

I think it's because they have done it so often in real life that nobody listens to.a word they say now. MN is a captive audience. It diesnt matter if people agree or not or even respond, they are just so arrogant they think everyone needs to hear thier opinions anyway, to point out how clever they are and how dumb everyone else is.
It's all really rather pathetic.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/10/2020 10:31

DH told me an interesting story the other day. He was coming back from doing our shopping and he passed 2 barbershops next to each other. One was a sort of upmarket hipster place where all the staff were muzzled up and the other was much more casual and not a mask to be seen. The first one was completely empty and the staff looked a bit glum. The second one was a cheerful bustle. Which one was more welcoming?

DominaShantotto · 02/10/2020 10:35

Dear Amazon - get here fucking fast with noise cancelling headphones or I shall be cancelling the noise of husband just being noisy with duct tape.

Well I would be if I hadn't used the duct tape to fix the footrest I bought in an attempt not to get really bad laptop pain from being on this bloody desk forever now - I had shitty cubital tunnel for a good month from the damned thing after everywhere closed down.

But I see now we've all been manfully told we're stupid little women so I shall get back to the kitchen sink in a meek and womanly way.

ISaySteadyOn · 02/10/2020 11:18

I never get that logic. If we're all stupid little women who are irrelevant then surely we and our 'tittle tattle' can just be safely ignored. Why the telling off?

Oh God, what an arse! Where were you meant to be going?
AgentCooper · 02/10/2020 11:35

God I am just feeling gloomy and anxious today. Probably because I’m ovulating but it’s crap. I hate working from home, it’s so lonely. It was DS’s third birthday yesterday and he was a nightmare at bedtime, just screaming and shouting for about an hour about not wanting to go to bed. I ended up shouting at him, on his birthday Sad

Thinking back to this time last week when we went to Center Parcs for SIL’s birthday and me and my two SILs had three hours at the spa, no DCs, no husbands. It was the most casual, fun chat I’d had with other adults in so long and I felt the best I had done in months.

CruCru · 02/10/2020 11:44

I’ve just met a couple of friends for breakfast at the Ned. It was awesome ... and we were all much too busy talking about other things to even mention Coronavirus. I got a great table too, despite us not having booked.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/10/2020 12:05

The spa sounds brilliant. I've still not used my spa day that was by birthday present shortly before lockdown, so that's over 9 months... I hadn't really thought about it. It is viable but it depends on how dementory it all is...

Had a lovely run this morning. Teamed up with two runners over fb. First time I've had any company on a run since the suspension of parkrun. It definitely took my mind off whingy calves Grin

I wasn't expecting to have a great chunk of roof missing from the house today! The roofer only approached DH a few days ago. This time last year when the problem was identified, it was a nightmare trying to get hold of someone. Then soggy winter (kept dry with towels and pans) then lockdown, then everything went into catch-up.
We can normally do the majority of DIY including plumbing and electrical (geek DH has his perks!) but occasionally we do need to get someone in which is a PITA as we don't have the connections.

Worldgonecrazy · 02/10/2020 12:16

Spa sounds lovely. I’m tempted but can’t be doing with the dementoring. No wax ahead of my holiday either so that means spending hours battling with razors 😫

TabbyStar · 02/10/2020 12:21

My gym has just announced the sauna and steam room have reopened, no dementor posts yet!

Reedwarbler · 02/10/2020 12:23

The bbc has a news story today about 20,000 Amazon employees having coronavirus. I found this shocking until I read further and found this was in the USA not the UK. The story has dropped down the rankings during the morning, but, even so, nice bit of scaremongering from the beeb, disingenuously not mentioning it is referring to the USA in the actual headline.
