Is my thumb weird?

If I give someone a thumbs up with my left hand, this is what it looks like... I tend to use the other hand because DP says it's weird. Confused

Do your thumbs do this? Is my thumb weird or is DP weird? Grin

I have never seen a thumb that curves back like that. Has it been broken at some point?

bubbles519 · 18/09/2020 14:13

I have this, its called a Hitchhikers thumb. Everyone I know thinks it's so weird and it's freaks them out ha Grin

SarahAndQuack · 18/09/2020 14:13

It's double-jointed, isn't it? That's not all that uncommon. I have double joints in the lower knuckles of both thumbs; you look to have one in the upper knuckle.

DumbThumb · 18/09/2020 14:20

It's double-jointed, isn't it?

Idk, I thought it was just a bit flexible and DP just had stiff thumbs! Other thumb just does it a bit. He struggles to stretch his legs for example Grin honestly thought double-jointed would mean I could bend it all the way back, which would be pretty fun as DP is weirded out from just the tip and it doesn't even go that far back!

My DD can click her finger in and out by wiggling it left and right at the base, you can hear it click sometimes, proper freaked me out when she was a toddler Blush

Mine does it too. Smile
I have also just noticed that I have broken the nail really low down. I have it when that happens.

SarahAndQuack · 18/09/2020 14:26

Yep, I can do the thing your DD does. Grin

If you think about it, your fingers don't (or do they?!) bend all the way forwards either, right? I mean, there's a natural limit to the joint. But I would think yours is probably double-jointed if it bends like that. Can you sort of feel the joint reverse in itself when you move it from pointing forwards to pointing back?

DumbThumb · 18/09/2020 14:28

Has it been broken?

No, never. Tbh I never really noticed it or paid it attention until DP said wtf is wrong with your thumb?

Hitchhikers thumb never heard of it! Thanks, maybe I will use this hand even more now and really put some welly into it Grin

We need our own 👍emoji, with a bent tip

You're not alone.

HoratiotheHorsefly · 18/09/2020 14:33

I can do this but I'm hyper mobile.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/09/2020 14:34

Mine is similar though not as curved. I also have hyper mobile finger joints.

unimaginativeusernamehere · 18/09/2020 14:34

Your thumb is kind of weird Grin

sporkle · 18/09/2020 14:39

Hitchhikers thumbs here too! Both bend to 90 degree angle, also hyper mobile.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 18/09/2020 14:41

I knew this is what it would be when I saw your thread title! Grin

Mine does it too and it really freaks people out. I have no other particularly mobile or flexible joints. Just bendy thumbs. If I try and make my thumb straight it feels so strange, like I'm being really lazy and giving a half-effort thumbs up or something.

DumbThumb · 18/09/2020 14:43

This is why I'm not convinced I'm double jointed tbh, it feels normal, just like how my other thumb feels but that one can't go back as far as this one. If I push it down the tip will get a right-angle, but won't go any further.

OP posts:
timeforawine · 18/09/2020 14:44

Both my thumbs do that :-D

EyeDrops · 18/09/2020 14:46

Mine do this! My fingers do too, though don't bend so far. If I stretch my fingers they don't go straight, they bend backwards.

I find it a bit of a pain if I'm honest, trying to push stiff buttons or use cutlery if somethings tough like pizza, they just bend! I don't know if it's double jointed or hyper mobile. It doesn't seem that weird to me!

DumbThumb · 18/09/2020 14:47

I have found my people!

If I try and make my thumb straight it feels so strange, like I'm being really lazy and giving a half-effort thumbs up or something.

Yes, that's exactly what a "straight thumbs up" feels like to me. At first I thought DP must be lying that his can't really bend at all, I even tried forcing his back a bit and turns out he was telling the truth Blush

tiredanddangerous · 18/09/2020 14:49

Mine are the same and my fingers also bed back the wrong way when I straighten them. The dc call them my freaky fingers Grin

bigoldwimp · 18/09/2020 14:56

Hehe mine too and my fingers also. It drives my husband mad when I point as he thinks everything is round the corner!! Smile

LizzieMacQueen · 18/09/2020 15:13

Can someone post a picture of a 'normal' thumb cause I'm not seeing the issue.

DumbThumb · 18/09/2020 15:34

Found this Lizzie

If you Google Hitchhikers thumb (thanks pp) and then I guess "thumbs up" maybe see a difference

My husband has thumbs like this Grin he says they are useful Hmm His bend a bit further than yours and when he puts the palm of his hand flat on a surface, his thumbs lies flat alongside it, and face the same direction. whereas I have thumbs like 'A' on your post and mine stick out to the side.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 18/09/2020 15:43

I have this and so does my baby daughter.

OublietteBravo · 18/09/2020 15:45

Yes! Both thumbs.
