Can I ask, what the kick up the bum you got to loose weight?

I looked at my feet today in sandals. Swollen feet and ankles. Last years loose size up trousers now digging in and restrictive. Face looks round on zoom meeting no matter the angle.
It's time to loose weight!! I just want this burst of realisation and motivation to last, as it hasn't for at least 18 months now.
What was your 'moment' that began your weight loss journey!! Please share, I'm in need of some inspirational stories

I got gall stones and realised my diet and being overweight hasn't helped the situation!

ForeverRedSkinhead · 17/09/2020 19:51

Back pain. I get less when I'm lighter.

MrsAvocet · 17/09/2020 19:53

Buying an item of clothing in size 16. I've been an 8-10 for most of my life but had gradually crept up to a fairly generous 14 since my youngest child was born. I'd managed to talk myself into believing that I wasn't really fat as size 14 is still average, even though my BMI was actually in the obese range, but when I bought a 16 I knew I had to take action. I've lost just under 3 stone since the beginning of the year and am now back to a size 10-12 and feel a great deal happier and healthier. Ideally I'd like to lose another half stone in tbe next couple of months though.

For me it was turning 60 and wanting to be as fit as possible. I took up Park Run , bought some scales and joined a gym. Over a year later I have gradually gone from 10st 4lbs to 8st 9lbs. No Parkrun or gym at present but I have kept running during lockdown.

Mooey89 · 17/09/2020 19:57

I started worrying about going on holiday because I was worried I would need a seatbelt extender.
I told people I didn’t like rides because I worried about not fitting. It meant I couldn’t go on any rides with my son and couldn’t take him to legoland.
Our furniture started creaking Blush

I had a gastric band fitted in July. My BMI was 43.5 when I started. I’ve lost 2 stone 10lb ish so far and BMI now 38.

Pickles89 · 17/09/2020 19:57

Lockdown happening and (nearly) everyone no longer working. I'd been unemployed for so long, and comfort eating all the while, feeling so miserable and alone. Then suddenly everyone was in the same boat and I wasn't feeling ostracized any more, so I didn't need to comfort eat. I lost 2 stone.

Mmsnet101 · 17/09/2020 19:58

Knee pain after pregnancy, which was referred to physio but then covid. Dr basically said to lose weight or take painkillers daily and wait it out.

I've lost just over a stone in the last 2 months, trying to do it gradually so I stick to it and can't do much exercise because of my knees!

MaMisled · 17/09/2020 20:00

I always thought my sister was lying about her weight and that I was actually a good stone lighter than her. Then I saw a full length photo of us together and realised I was much, much fatter. Turns out she'd added a stone to her weight, when we discussed it, to make me feel better!

veryvery · 17/09/2020 20:01

Breast cancer. Wasn't told it was because I was overweight. But after treatment I wanted to feel better about myself, body image and health and fitness wise. So I started running and logging what I ate on FitBit. I make sure I have a deficit in calories most days. Fast forward 2 years later, I have lost 3 stone. Gone from a dress size 14/16 to a size 10. And I run 10k most days!Smile

CasuallyMasculine · 17/09/2020 20:03

Being told by the GP that my BP was getting close to medication territory, and that it would be an irreversible step.

Started MFP and lost 3st 7lb over two years - my BP is normal now Smile

itsme · 17/09/2020 20:04

Buying a wedding dress, it was an 18 and was tight around my tummy. Since January I've lost around a stone and my dress now fits perfectly. But, recently I've found out I've got gallstones which has given me an extra kick up the arse.

Butterbeeeen · 17/09/2020 20:06

My hen party pictures. I saw the pics and cried.

woodlandwalker · 17/09/2020 20:08

I put on 2 stone when I gave up smoking. I retired the following year and started exercising but the weight stayed the same so thought that's what happens with age.
A friend said that she is careful about her weight as she didn't want to become one of those older women whose stomach stuck out further than the rest of them. I realised that was me and I had to do something. I went to Weight Watchers and slowly lost 3 stone.

ilovespinach · 17/09/2020 20:12

When I weighed myself for the first time in a couple of years and realised I had a BMI of 32 and classed as obese. I knew I'd steadily been getting bigger but it was a big shock.

anascrecca · 17/09/2020 20:13

Being told I was pre diabetic and had fatty liver

Baggingarea · 17/09/2020 20:20

Someone thought I was pregnant :(

ImANosyNeighbour · 17/09/2020 20:21

I started a new job and there was a long length mirror in the locker room with awful lighting that you couldn’t avoid. I felt like total shit every time I saw myself in it. That was the start of a 4 stone weight loss!

EugenesAxe · 17/09/2020 20:25

Nothing much else besides a friend saying she was going on a diet plan and me deciding to join her.... then getting good results and wanting to keep going.

It’s a quick weight loss plan and I’ve lost about 9lbs over three weeks so far. I’m feeling determined to just keep going until I’m finally back to roughly where I started, at 11.5st. I’m quite tall but was just within the obese category. I’m fairly fed up of not being attractive anymore (and I don’t give a fuck about all the body beautiful stuff; I know I think slim bodies far more beautiful than ones like mine). Also my age puts me at the edge of not being able to correct things acceptably - like skin remaining saggy and stuff - so I’d like to give it my best shot while I’ve got some vestiges of youth about me.

CathyorClaire · 17/09/2020 20:29

I realised my weight was steadily going in the wrong direction and wincing at the scale reading wasn't going to cut it.

Bought a second-hand cross trainer and went from there. Four plus stone off and stayed off. I'm now the proud owner of four home gym machines and use them daily. As a bonus I'm now an expert on the world's worst ever DVD's Grin

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 17/09/2020 20:34

One of my best friends has just lost 2 1/2 stone . I don't want to be the last fat one in our friendship group. So, fear and jealousy, basically.

Cauterize · 17/09/2020 20:43

I had to have an MRI a month ago, they insisted on weighing me and I was the heaviest I've ever been and really disgusted with myself.

I knew I'd porked up over the past 6 months but I'd been in denial about how bad it was.

Anyway it gave me the kick up the arse that I needed. I've lost 6llbs so far and completely overhauled my diet and really upped my daily exercise.

I've got 2 stone more to lose to reach my target weight!

BishopBrennansArse · 17/09/2020 20:45

Saw a photo of myself on facebook and hated it. I'm enormous again.

Juanmorebeer · 17/09/2020 20:45

Saw photos of myself and was shocked. I knew but just kept going. Also barely getting into my work uniform.

Am 5 weeks in and have lost 12lb so far. Feel so much better. 20lb to go.

Y0ubetterwerk · 17/09/2020 20:46

My friend has the most unforgiving full length mirror. I caught sight of myself in it and was fucking horrified.
Im very little so that extra half stone is extremely noticeable.
I'm doing well with 16:8. Training my body to feel hunger after so many months of just stuffing my face is hard, but I'm feeling miles better.

juneflowers · 17/09/2020 20:46

My kick up the bum moment was today at work. I've seen a picture of a potential colleague that I'll be working closely with if she passes her vetting. She is beautiful. Thin, blonde. I'm truly happy for her....

But as of that moment I opened a myfitnesspal account, set my calories to 1600 and have been tracking since lunch time. I went for my first ever run after work (more like run for 60 seconds than quick walk) but still!

I don't want to look even bigger because a thinner woman is working with me for six hours a day (call me shallow I know!)

I've been feeling frumpy and horrible on and off (more on than off) for the last couple of months, but she seeing her beautifully chiseled collar bone and tiny waist has made me realise that today is the day!
