Can I ask, what the kick up the bum you got to loose weight?

I looked at my feet today in sandals. Swollen feet and ankles. Last years loose size up trousers now digging in and restrictive. Face looks round on zoom meeting no matter the angle.
It's time to loose weight!! I just want this burst of realisation and motivation to last, as it hasn't for at least 18 months now.
What was your 'moment' that began your weight loss journey!! Please share, I'm in need of some inspirational stories

Having DH take a pic of me in some new clothes I'd ordered (we didn't have a mirror) and just looking awful. That was 2ish years ago; I've lost and kept off around 24kg.

Mintjulia · 18/09/2020 08:44

I had a baby at 45 and decided that I needed to be fit to guarantee being around for at least another 25 years.

So I started running, c25k, parkrun etc. Gave up alcohol. Cut red meat consumption to twice a week. It made a big difference.

Penners99 · 18/09/2020 08:54

My kick was my Doctor telling me I was a fat fucker and needed to lose weight before I dropped dead.

I lost 7 stone in a year and have kept it off for the past 20 years.

CeibaTree · 18/09/2020 12:15

I had a miscarriage, and although it turned out to be due to chromosomal issues, while I was waiting for those results (which took 5 weeks to come back) I did a lot of reading about being overweight and miscarriage/infertility and this gave me the incentive that I had not seemed to be able to muster before! I had been overweight before having my eldest, and afterwards was just into the obese BMI category.
One book that really helped change my mindset was 'The Obesity Code' by Jason Fung. Low carb is what works for me and I have lost 3 stone so far, with one more to go.

Headingtowardsforty · 18/09/2020 12:23

Realising that I was getting too fat to get on roller-coasters, which I love, and that the time was coming when I would have to get off as they couldn't lock the restraint on me. Just over a year later I am 7st lighter, with 3 more to go, but almost out of the obese weight category for the first time in my adult life.

Two things:
First, a photo taken in Rome. On it, my husband (Mr Sporty) looks absolutely amazing whereas I look nine months pregnant (without the glow).
Second, a gym opened up directly opposite my office with extended opening hours and I realised that it was decision time. Exercising was never going to get more convenient than that.

Noshowlomo · 18/09/2020 13:58

A photo of me and my son and husband. I look 9 months pregnant and my thighs are huge!
I started WW on 9th sep and have lost 7lb and I’m feeling so much better for it already.

What did you do to lose Sven stone? That's amazing willpower.

@whatsoccuringnow

We've found the big difference is ( what I've since discovered but didn't know at the time) is fasting.
We don't eat until 12 each day and then eat a 'breakfast ' so fresh berries with nuts, yoghurt and something like shredded wheat.
Teatime usually try to eat fish or chicken with a salad and cous cous. Herbs, spices and things like sweet chilli sauce help with flavour.

We also have a weekly homemade veg/lentil based curry with naan or a homemade chilli and rice. Fish, prawns or chicken in a fajita or wrap, with garlic and salad is great with perhaps homemade guacamole. Steak and salad, meatballs and a home made tomato based pasta sauce, omelette are all fine.

We like to pick at snacks in the evening. By not eating during the morning, we can, when we are tired and have less willpower. We eat nuts, olives or buy 'bite sized' chocolate bars just for a taste. Liquorice sweets to chew are also quite satisfying.

We've lost weight before now, eating similar to the above and lost a few pounds. The late breakfast ( fasting) really has made a surprising difference. As posted earlier by DP has lost 3st. I'm tiny 5ft 2, but have also lost about 9lbs and weigh 7st 12. So far I'm easily maintaining that, including the odd glass of wine!
Good luck.

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 18/09/2020 20:08

I was just diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension which is generally caused by being overweight. IIH can make you blind and it’s vision loss is not always reversible, so the weight needs to come off.

littlefireseverywhere · 18/09/2020 20:10

Knee pain, high BP, and getting on the scales! 20 st Blush so doing something about it. DH helping too & of course he’s lost more than me.

NatalieH2220 · 18/09/2020 20:11

We weren't having any luck TTC so I wanted to get back to the weight I was before my first son in case that was why. It worked! I now have to lose it all again after this one!Blush

OhioOhioOhio · 18/09/2020 20:12

I think mine is going to be my wee one asking why I always wear the same clothes.

peonyblossom · 18/09/2020 20:13

My knees and ankles hurting when I got out of bed at age 36. Realising that I wasn't carrying 'a bit of baby weight' after two babies in three years that I'd actually hit 15 stone when I'm only 5"4. Reading that COVID is much more likely to kill you if you're fat. Looking in the mirror and seeing a very very fat person. Moonface. Not wanting to be the really fat mum at the school gates. Dressing only to hide my body, not to actually like what I wear. Realising that I turned down an invitation to a wedding that I really wanted to go to because I was too fat to look nice in anything.

Nearly three stone down since June 💪🏻Two more to go!!

Haven't read the whole thread but why are people still writing loose (rhymes with mousse) instead of lose (rhymes with snooze) weight? This never used to be a problem and it's so frustrating to see it everywhere. Is it bloody autocorrect?

Gosh does that really matter in the context of this thread? I'm sure everyone reading knows what the misspellings mean. People are really trying to help the OP by sharing some quite personal experiences and you are judging their spelling? 🤦🏻‍♀️

COVID. Fear of being morbidly obese. Had BMI of 42 now BMI of 30... can't wait to tip into the overweight category. 4 and a half stone down since March.

You’ve lost 4.5 stone in six months? Have you been eating anything at all? Shock
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/09/2020 08:46

Not as extreme as others on here (luckily I caught myself in time), only about 6 kg.
Found out that I am actually 4 cm smaller than I thought, looking overweight when sitting down in my underwear in front of a mirror,
witnessing MIL (95) lose/loose her independence bc. of her weight,
knowing I need an OP on my foot - the less weight the better, not wearing dresses or skirts because they don't look "right" anymore.

I downloaded fatsecret - they put me on 1400 calories for a slow loss.

NerrSnerr · 19/09/2020 08:52

For me it was that none of my clothes fitted any more and I was going to have to go up another size. I was also feeling massively sluggish with a bad back. I have lost just over a stone so far with another 2 or so to go.

dorothysredshoes · 19/09/2020 08:54

Asked for a blood test and found out I was pre diabetic

Mrslafayette · 19/09/2020 08:56

I found out I was pre diabetic 18 months ago. Still find it hard to give up the sugar. It's very silly of me.

Whatabouteryallaboutery · 19/09/2020 09:08

A photograph of me looking like I'd been inflated. I took up running, including completing a marathon, and lost 4 stone.

monkeytennis97 · 19/09/2020 12:42

@CasuallyMasculine yes😊 Around 1500-1600 cals a day- try to do at least 600 cals a day exercise too.

veryvery · 19/09/2020 14:00

I've got to say walking is a really good way to up the calorie burn. It's pretty much zero recovery. I'm a runner so run most days anyway but walking about 3 or 4 miles add a burn if 300 to 400 calories to the 700 I burn running. I run just over an hour and walk just over an hour most days now so burn about 1000 cals through exercise. My TDEE is only about 1500 if I were sedentary so you can imagine that extra 1000 calorie burn make the food choices much more flexible.
