What did you want when you were a child?

Inspired by an article I read about a benevolent boss giving every employee their childhood dream. What did you dream of owning/having as a child?

Mine would have been a swimming pool. There were neighbours whose pool I could see from my bedroom window and I was always envious of them having fun in it. We were NEVER invited to play in it. I still want a garden big enough to get one of those solid sided above ground pools with steps, filter, cover, chemicals etc. I bet it would be an absolute expensive pain in the bum. But for one glorious summer I would love it! What was your childhood fantasy item?

A 6 months off school 😂. I keep telling my kids they've had my childhood dream!

schnubbins · 16/09/2020 17:45

A bought dress. My mother sewed all my clothes herself .Always simple cotton dresses , shorts and tops .(We lived in Africa) when we moved to this side of the world she continued to make my clothes and knit my jumpers .I had never had anything bought out of a shop. I had a friend who always got beautiful dresses from the best shop in town. One day she showed me yet again a selection of smashing new dresses and it was too much for me.I went home and burst into tears and bared my soul.My mum brought me into town straight away and bought me a dress.. a red one.I will never forget it.

A puppy.

HaudMaDug · 16/09/2020 17:54

A Grifter or a Chopper bike instead of the poxy Budgie that I had.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 16/09/2020 17:57

I'm another one who yearned for Mr Frosty. No fucking point now, I've got sensitive teeth Angry

daisychain1620 · 17/09/2020 09:38

Looking back Mr Frosty must have been a pain in the ass for parents. I had a Mr Frosty and it took so many ice cubes and a lot of hard work to shave enough of them into one slushy! I have memories of drinking my 'delicious' slushy but there was more of the flavouring than ice in my cup.Grin

Did anyone have mousetrap? I really wanted this as a child and have no idea if this was as good as I had imagined.

BertieBotts · 17/09/2020 11:55

I loved Mousetrap! I never had it but played it at several friends' houses. My memory of it is that it was temperamental and often fell apart too early.

I also really wanted Mousetrap. I bought it for my dc about 10 years ago. It was a massive PITA didsapointment.
spiderlight · 17/09/2020 14:18

I really wanted Mousetrap. I remember one of the boys bringing it into school on end-of-term toy day when I was about 8 and it looked so complex and colourful and exciting, although I never got to play it because the boys monopolised it all day. Still haven't played it to this day!

luckystarmaking · 17/09/2020 14:21

All I wanted was a passport. My mum wouldn't allow it in case my dad kidnapped us to his country.

Got one at 20 and been to a few interesting places. I always save money towards a trip abroad and its something I want to do for the rest of my life.

Satsuma2 · 17/09/2020 14:27

A horse and my own home. Had horses, still waiting for my own home.

Cactuslockdown · 17/09/2020 14:28

A puppy and a mr frosty. I got both in the end as an adult... dog is good, mr frosty was very disappointing!

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/09/2020 15:03

I really wanted my ears pierced from about 7/8 years old. Eventually got them done aged 12 after years of nagging and pestering

TV in my room I never got until I was 26

Fantastic! Has the reality lived up to what you dreamed of??

@Sunnydaysstillhere

A sibling!! When df told me he had gotten married my hopes were risen. Until I actually met my sm. Am certain she didn't have dc just to upset me. My dgm worked in a top toy store in out hometown and I had every toy imaginable over the years. Pointless with nobody to play with.. Sad
I find this very sad to read. Just curious as to whether you have any children?
Dee1975 · 17/09/2020 22:08

An ‘a la carte’ (toy) kitchen. Santa never bought me one. They don’t sell that brand anymore, but I took great pleasure in choosing and buying a toy kitchen for my DC :-)

Icequeen01 · 17/09/2020 22:09

I had desperately always wanted a little wooden cot for my tiny tears doll (this was in the late 60's) and Father Xmas finally brought me one. Sadly, one of the sides didn't drop down like it was supposed to so my dad took it back to the toy shop. Unfortunately, the shop didn't have any others to replace it so instead of bringing it home again and explaining the problem to me my dad decided he would do me a huge favour and swap it for a Dr Who projector and slides set. I was gutted and never saw that cot again!

Boopeedoop · 18/09/2020 00:06

I really wanted a train set.

Mum wouldn't let me have "boys toy's"

Bloodybridget · 18/09/2020 07:48

Oh @schnubbins! Your post brought tears to my eyes!

BikeRunSki · 18/09/2020 16:39

Some very grounding reality checks from
@luckystarmaking*,*@Sunnydaysstillhere and @schnubbins. It’s what we all need from time to time.

If it makes you feel better my dc don't play with their toys together- they fight and argue and refuse to let each other borrow anything. Dd2 steals her sisters best things and hides them. My brother and I had entirely different interests so would never have played together with anything. I mostly remember him trapping me at the bottom of sleeping bags and turning off the things I was watching so he could watch heavy metal or skateboarding videos. My friend brother used to take her toys for target practice for his air rifle. I feel your impression of siblings playing happily together could be a wishful thinking one

Sunnydaysstillhere · 19/09/2020 09:45

Ahem I have 11 dc ...
Blush
2 fingers up to my dps or what??.
Grin

midnightstar66 · 19/09/2020 09:49

I guess if you have 11 there is a higher chance some of them might get on and play with each other - maybe that's where I went wrong limiting friendship chances. My 2 actively hate each other! 😆
