What did you want when you were a child?

Inspired by an article I read about a benevolent boss giving every employee their childhood dream. What did you dream of owning/having as a child?

Mine would have been a swimming pool. There were neighbours whose pool I could see from my bedroom window and I was always envious of them having fun in it. We were NEVER invited to play in it. I still want a garden big enough to get one of those solid sided above ground pools with steps, filter, cover, chemicals etc. I bet it would be an absolute expensive pain in the bum. But for one glorious summer I would love it! What was your childhood fantasy item?

@midnightstar66

Mine was a horse. My mother sternly told me aged 12, if I wanted a horse I'd have to save up and buy one. Well, I saved up for four years and bought a horse I'll never forget the look on her face when I showed her my building society balance 😁

@purrswhileheeats I was told this but I was just turned aged 4 at the time. Well, I saved my weekly pocket money and money from my grandad when we visited, birthday/Xmas money etc religiously for years. By the time I was 10 my parents really couldn't refuse. It was a really costly mistake on their part 😆.

The other thing was a keeper (keyper?) I wanted the snail but my parents never managed to find it. They found a plush handbag version but it just wasn't the same. The Clarks shoes with the magic key did not fit my feet which made me really sad!

I wanted the Swan Princess Keyper! Friend had one I was envious!

@SamsMumsCateracts

I apologise if I kill the mood, but the one thing that I wanted more than anything as a child was to be free of pain. I had very, very severe scoliosis and was braced for much of my childhood. I was in pain all the time and the braces rubbed terribly. I just wanted to wear nice things like my friends and to wear a swimming costume at the beach. And a Dreamphone game. I'd have loved one of those!
Flowers. Are you free from pain now?
IAteAlltheAvocadoPears · 16/09/2020 11:11

I wanted my dad to die at times and for the abuse to stop. I wanted to.feel.safe

GoatWardrobe · 16/09/2020 11:15

Somewhere quiet to do my homework.

violetbunny · 16/09/2020 11:21

A play doh kitchen

Fifthtimelucky · 16/09/2020 11:23

When I was three or four I had a major operation. When I came out of hospital my parents were so relieved that they said I could have anything I wanted. I asked for a garden swing and a cat.

Later in my childhood I wanted (but never had) a space hopper, a pogo stick, an etch a sketch, and a pair of clackers (just as well that I never had the clackers as they were subsequently banned).

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2020 11:26

I really wanted a cabbage patch kid. I ended up
With about 60 in the end. Still have them as collected again as an adult!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2020 11:28

I had Clark's magic steps. Used to walk round on top tor's to keep the clear bit of the heel clean.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2020 11:30

I also wanted a mr frosty, a shell suit and a lolo ball. But as I broke my ankle just holding a skipping rope that was banned.

BikeRunSki · 16/09/2020 13:04

White leather ice skates.
I got them once, and grew out of them very quickly.

@Holothane, there is a blind tandem cyclists club near me. I intend to volunteer as a pilot when I retire.

SamsMumsCateracts · 16/09/2020 14:49

@IAteAlltheAvocadoPears I've had a lot of surgery and am now the most pain free I've been. Not completely, but can't complain generally. Thank you for asking.

SamsMumsCateracts · 16/09/2020 14:50

@Toddlerteaplease Were they the shoes with the key in them? I remember those!

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2020 15:22

Yes. With glittery heels. They were awesome.

PaperMonster · 16/09/2020 15:24

I wanted children’s bedding. Duvets were just coming in and my friends had lovely children’s duvet covers, but I had a double bed and double duvet covers were more sensible and grown up. So now at the grand old age of 50 I own unicorn and rainbow bedding!!

PaperMonster · 16/09/2020 15:25

As a teen I wanted a pair of Kickers - but wasn’t allowed them. Goodness knows why.

Witchend · 16/09/2020 16:19

A dolls house.

I wasn't allowed one because my room was too small to store one.
My dsis who had a room twice sized mine didn't want one.

When the dc have moved out, I'm going to have the biggest one ever! Grin

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 16/09/2020 16:58

I always wanted a Paddington Bear with real wellies and a wool duffle coat. I also used to pore over the Sacha Doll booklet - they were so expensive but so beautiful. I loved all the simple details and how well made they were. Never got one but toyed with the idea of buying one as an adult.

I do feel lucky reading this thread though as I had a few Fuzzy Felts I loved and my favourite dolls were Pippa and Carrie. I also got a Tiny Tears eventually, but only after my Mum bought a copy and I wouldn't touch it Grin.

OP, I agree with the swimming pool. We've had above-ground ones for our own children but I loved swimming and would've loved a pool as a child.

spiderlight · 16/09/2020 17:00

A bike, roller-skates or a pony - all deemed too dangerous.
A Sindy horse - begged for years for one of these but my parents steadfastly refused. No idea why.
When much younger, a Weebles funfair. My friend had one and I was so jealous!

spiderlight · 16/09/2020 17:02

And long hair! I had the most awful short pageboy cut all through childhood, and then a Lady Di cut, but I just desperately wanted to grow it. My mum hated long hair though and didn't let me until I was a teenager. Apart from trims, I haven't had it cut since!

Livingthecovidaloca · 16/09/2020 17:04

To go around the world in eighty days!

PinkLegoBrick · 16/09/2020 17:05

Curly hair.

Tootletum · 16/09/2020 17:10

So many things. Wanted to be allowed to watch TV. Wanted my dad to be less angry. Wanted to be allowed all the toys my friends had. We were only allowed paint and brushes, nothing else (in my memory anyway). So we spent all our time at friends houses. Maybe that was the plan...

BikeRunSki · 16/09/2020 17:14

Straight hair!

Popcornismandatory · 16/09/2020 17:25

A pony

Happynow001 · 16/09/2020 17:27

A Resistance swim spa. I saw one in use on CSI years ago and wanted one instantly. I've even got room for one - just not the funds! 🌹
