What did you want when you were a child?

Inspired by an article I read about a benevolent boss giving every employee their childhood dream. What did you dream of owning/having as a child?

Mine would have been a swimming pool. There were neighbours whose pool I could see from my bedroom window and I was always envious of them having fun in it. We were NEVER invited to play in it. I still want a garden big enough to get one of those solid sided above ground pools with steps, filter, cover, chemicals etc. I bet it would be an absolute expensive pain in the bum. But for one glorious summer I would love it! What was your childhood fantasy item?

Mr Frosty
Barbie
My Little Pony
A Popple

On a larger scale when I was about 4 I made friends with a little boy in a beer garden (where most of my childhood was spent)
He took a real shine to me and his parents asked mine if I could go back to their house to play. Mine agreed ShockConfused and off I went to their house. Anyway it was amazing. His playroom was gigantic and like Toys R Us.
However what blew my mind as a four year old was there was a mezzanine floor which was his bedroom and he had a twirly slide to go from his bedroom to the playroom. There was also a train track that went around the whole room. I wanted those two things soooo badly.

Mr Frosty snow cone maker. On my list for xmas every year and never got it. I got a chocolate coin maker one year. Which was nice. But totally not the same. DH said he'll get me one for xmas this year just to shut me up 😁

Twigaletta · 15/09/2020 20:33

@Wavingwhiledrowning that's a lovely ending!

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius simple pleasures 😊 It never occurred to me to own an umbrella until I was in my late 20s. I just used to put my hood up and run. I can't remember what made me finally decide I was an umbrella kind of person but you obviously had insight as a child that passed me by for over 2 decades Grin

I wanted a handheld portable tv so I could watch whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Much like an iPad/phone now!

MsFrog · 15/09/2020 20:35

@PatVPeggy

1) a Paul Daniels magic set 2) a Forever Friends Parker fountain pen. I never got one and a girl in my class did and she’s a doctor now 3) a pair of those trainers where you could inflate the tongue with a little pump 4) a Global Technicolour t-shirt which changed colour in hot weather. Our neighbour’s son had one and I was obsessed with it
@PatVPeggy. "A Forever Friends Parker fountain pen. I never got one and a girl in my class did and she's a doctor now"

🤣

A pony.
A cape.
Black patent shoes
An etch-a-sketch
A bike.
A Barbie/Sindy

Showing my age, I expect

Oceangirl82 · 15/09/2020 20:37

Holothane

A bike being virtually blind no chance.

Did you ever get to ride a tandem either as a child or adult?

nancy75 · 15/09/2020 20:38

I really really wanted a set of Russian dolls.
My grandparents went to Russia every year for a holiday (Weird in itself, I think they were spies)
Every one of my cousins got a present from Russia apart from me (Mad family, loads of aunts, uncles & cousins - my dad was the gps least favourite child)
The first xmas I was with DH he bought me a beautiful gold & white set (and now I’ve got loads)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/09/2020 20:39

The Playmobil Victorian Mansion.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 15/09/2020 20:39

Oh I know what I wanted and was never allowed when I was very young - shop bought playdoh with the plastic accessories! We had homemade but I'd played with the shop bought stuff with plastic rollers and cutters and other tat at a friend's house and really wanted it - the same is true of cheap mass produced white bread with shop bought jam - a luxury I tasted at a friend's and my mother made a face about and wouldn't allow GrinBlush

ISpeakJive · 15/09/2020 20:40

Clark’s Magic Steps! My mum thought they were too expensive.

Barbie House.

thelegohooverer · 15/09/2020 20:41

Suction cups for my hands and knees so that I could scale tall buildings like Marie Bonnet in Catch The Cat and help the French Resistance.

Given how often my suction phone holder falls off my windscreen it’s probably as well I never got them.

Grapesoda7 · 15/09/2020 20:42

I really wanted my own bedroom, a Fisher Price Tree house and proper playdoh rather than homemade.

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/09/2020 20:42

OP we got one of those pools at the start of lockdown, second hand. It isn't expensive or hard to run.
As a child I wanted exactly what I want now. Space. I shared a room until age 14 and hated it.
Now my kids have a room each which I think is lovely for them. And I have to share with dh!

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/09/2020 20:44

I also really wanted long hair, but my hair was thick and my mum made me keep it short. I was often mistaken for a boy.

RainingDogsAndDogs · 15/09/2020 20:45

A Sega Mega drive - I absolutely loved technology and games. Me and my best friend both wanted one but the presents under the tree from our parents were different shapes. Both hoped ours was a mega drive. Christmas morning I opened a Chocolate shape factory set. Gutted. My friend got a mega drive. My dad was very against gaming stuff. I can still remember that disappointed feeling but acting like I loved the other gift. Sorry, that sounds very ungrateful of me.

Daphnesmate01 · 15/09/2020 20:45

I wanted to spend a day with my mum, just doing something nice. For her to choose something I would like and to enjoy spending time together. I remember suggesting things when I was about 9/10 but didn't get anywhere. I wanted her to care enough to want to do it too, and it not be a forced thing. I gave up.

This. I try to do this with my own dcs now every once in a while - 3 dcs and I try to give them each a special day/time out alone with me.

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/09/2020 20:47

That's funny. My sister and I got a Megadrive one year. We were very confused, having never expressed an interest. It was secoond hand. We only ever played Sonic and Columns, mastered them and got bored of them very quickly. I hate tech even now.

missyB1 · 15/09/2020 20:48

A doll called Pippa, she was a smaller version of Sindy. You could get a wardrobe for her with clothes. My mum said she couldn’t find her in the shops Hmm

KinderWild · 15/09/2020 20:50

A Mr frosty
A shellsuit
To be a mermaid

Smudgeis13 · 15/09/2020 20:53

My sisters girls, now in their 30s, regularly complained that they never got Mr Frosty, despite asking every year. Last year she bought them one and they agreed it was rubbish.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 15/09/2020 20:54

I desperately wanted to go on Jim'll Fix It. Fortunately for me that childhood wish was never granted!

toiletpaper · 15/09/2020 20:56

I always wanted a super sticker factory and I never got one. I still remind my mother about it to this day!
