What did you want when you were a child?

Inspired by an article I read about a benevolent boss giving every employee their childhood dream. What did you dream of owning/having as a child?

Mine would have been a swimming pool. There were neighbours whose pool I could see from my bedroom window and I was always envious of them having fun in it. We were NEVER invited to play in it. I still want a garden big enough to get one of those solid sided above ground pools with steps, filter, cover, chemicals etc. I bet it would be an absolute expensive pain in the bum. But for one glorious summer I would love it! What was your childhood fantasy item?

A Tree House.

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/09/2020 22:51

OP ours was sloped too! We spent a lot of time levelling it. Worth it in the end.

I also really wanted long hair, but my hair was thick and my mum made me keep it short. I was often mistaken for a boy.

As a light skinned mixed race kid with an 80s Afro, you can't imagine the hours I spent praying to Santa to give me long hair.
In the end I used to wear tights over my head with tennis balls in the feet and pretend. I do now have long hair, maintained with a fuck ton of keratin.

That and a puppy... I never got the puppy. I did get a Keyper though, I bloody loved that thing!

@Littlepond

I wanted one of those things that look like Saturn - the bouncy ball with the plastic ring around it that you stand on and bounce. I can’t remember what they were called
Ah I had one of those! I think it was called a disco hopper?! I had a few as they sometimes burst. I used to skip with mine Grin
Strokethefurrywall · 15/09/2020 23:04

Oh oh and the little blue shoes from Annie. I wanted those satin bad boys soooo much!!

I always wanted a Mr Frosty set. The next door neighbour got one and it turned out to be boring. So I don’t know why I never got over not having one.

bellinique · 15/09/2020 23:18

And crutches! I was desperate to break my leg for some bizarre reason.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 15/09/2020 23:22

A Chopper bike.
My mother said they were for boys and instead got me a folding shopper with a basket. Oh The disappoint!

Thecomfortador · 15/09/2020 23:28

I wanted to go to boarding school, specifically Mallory Towers. I remember realising I was turning 12 and it didn't look like plans were being put in place for it.

I also remember someone's mum coming to play school with a massive ice cream in her hand for her little girl. My parents only ever bought ice lollies and I longed for an ice cream with sprinkles and sauce.

fairydustandpixies · 15/09/2020 23:47

A pogo stick. *boing! I'd still love one and I'm almost 50 now!

fairydustandpixies · 15/09/2020 23:51

Oh, and a scooter!

fairydustandpixies · 15/09/2020 23:52

And a poncho. My little sis was given a poncho - OH the ENVY!!!

Floralnomad · 16/09/2020 00:00

A horse , my dad said we could have one when we ( my sister and I) were old enough to look after it and we got our first one when I was 13 . It was every bit as good as I thought it would be .

SamsMumsCateracts · 16/09/2020 00:12

I apologise if I kill the mood, but the one thing that I wanted more than anything as a child was to be free of pain. I had very, very severe scoliosis and was braced for much of my childhood. I was in pain all the time and the braces rubbed terribly. I just wanted to wear nice things like my friends and to wear a swimming costume at the beach. And a Dreamphone game. I'd have loved one of those!

Magentastorm101 · 16/09/2020 00:27

I really wanted :
The big yellow teapot toy
Polly Pockets
And to be on the show Dempsey & Makepeace lol 😂

Snorkelface · 16/09/2020 01:23

Barbie Campervan - still a bit bitter.

MiniTheMinx · 16/09/2020 01:31

A pet seal. i was an only child, spoilt with things. I never asked for anything, things just appeared. The only other thing I wanted was an older brother.

Rafflesway · 16/09/2020 01:34

A lock for my bedroom door to keep my mother's perverted husband out! 😥

Sweetcorn, Lego and brand new books, rather than library books.

PhilistinesAreUnderrated · 16/09/2020 02:24

Big Trax

FallonsTeaRoom · 16/09/2020 07:39

A lock for my bedroom door to keep my mother's perverted husband out!

Sad

All I wanted was something that wasn't also given to my younger sister too so when she invariably immediately broke hers mine was than handed down as ”she’s only little” Shock

Giggorata · 16/09/2020 10:45

I wanted long hair, too, but it was curly and I think my mother feared the tangles, so it got sheared off at shoulder length.

I wanted fashionable clothes, and jeans, and high heels (1/2 inch, I think they were) and I really had to fight for them, as my parents didn't get it at all.

And having been given loads of American comics, I firstly wanted to go to Disneyland, then to America generally;
I was desperate for the dancing skeleton on the back of the comics, imagining my own little pet skeleton, not realising it was all cardboard and invisible threads.

But mostly, I wanted secret passages, fairies and witches, caves, Narnia, and magic to be real.
