What has happened to all the tinned sweetcorn

There was absolutely none of any brand earlier this week in tesco. I thought nothing of it but have just been to sainsburys in a different town and none there either. Both seemed to have plenty of fresh sweetcorn.
So is it Brexit, covid, zombies or what?

It disappeared around the same time as flour did here. Managed to get some in home bargains

lifesalongsong · 05/09/2020 13:57

No problem in my local aldi, I buy it every week, plenty there today.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/09/2020 13:57

It's disappeared here aswell (Lincolnshire). Can get Asda value, but in salt water.

HyggeHeart · 05/09/2020 13:58

.. and here (the midlands) along with all the tinned tuna!

Horsemad · 05/09/2020 13:59

Couldn't get any last week in a large Tesco in Lincs, I was after Green Giant but they had absolutely none at all, not even own brand. 🤔 Haven't tried since.

Horsemad · 05/09/2020 14:00

Wonder if people are stocking up again...?

StealthPolarBear · 05/09/2020 14:01

Ooh interesting. There was plenty of flour and loo roll. I wonder if there are rumours that tinned sweetcorn cures covid :o

God I hope not, it was bad enough the first time around!

Op try an ethnic store if you have one, they served me well for pretty much everything in the midst of the madness.

HermioneWeasley · 05/09/2020 14:04

There’s a shortage due to bad harvests

Horsemad · 05/09/2020 14:05

Aah, that makes sense @HermioneWeasley. Apparently bread is going to be more expensive too now because of poor harvests. Good job I've given it up then! 😆

chocolatepudandchocolatesauce · 05/09/2020 14:07

What about all the chocolate Penguins? I've looked in four shops and can't find any!!! Not an issue, I was just intregued after the first two shops so now look wherever I go Grin

LunaLoveFood · 05/09/2020 14:11

I've been trying to get some for weeks as it's one of the few veg that DC with ASD will eat. Finally managed to get 2 tins delivered today.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/09/2020 14:11

Spam appears to be in short supply too, not that most Mumsnetters would notice or care.

StealthPolarBear · 05/09/2020 14:12

Lol at spam being in short supply, there's an oxymoron

What about all the chocolate Penguins?

It's a bad season for penguins. Poor breeding season earlier in the year apparently - something to do with global warming. There was a story in the Times.

Hahaha 😆😆😆

I heard in the radio that McVities are needing new jokes for their Penguin chocolate - maybe they're reducing stock until they get some?! 😆

MJMG2015 · 05/09/2020 14:17

Yeah, bad harvest affecting a number of products!

But it makes for a far less bun fighty thread if we can't find a Covid/Brexit angle 🤣

It's odd though, the distribution of some things must be quite unbalanced as shortages in some areas & a good supply in others, of the same thing, with no apparent reason. I mean, I doubt there some sweet corn fritter convention right near you @StealthPolarBear

@LunaLoveFood. Just 2 tins? I think I'd have been tempted to order 2 trays! It's a nightmare when you can get the handful of things they will eat!!

simpson · 05/09/2020 14:17

I haven’t been able to get any from Tesco or Asda for weeks…thank god for the local corner shop!

mogtheexcellent · 05/09/2020 14:19

Tried for weeks to get some, in the end gave up and ordered frozen.

It's weird.

StealthPolarBear · 05/09/2020 14:21

Showing my ignorance here but the fresh sweetcorn is piled up, sainsburys had it on offer fairly recently. So was the bad harvest last year's?

OP posts:
clearsommespace · 05/09/2020 14:21

Definitely not Brexit related.

I'm in France and can only get branded tinned sweetcorn. There hasn't been any supermarket own brand for a few weeks.

RingtheBells · 05/09/2020 14:21

The bad harvest is also affecting wheat as well, mention of price rises on the news a couple of weeks

StealthPolarBear · 05/09/2020 14:22

I will look in coop later

OP posts:
MrsMoastyToasty · 05/09/2020 14:24

Plenty of sweetcorn plants in the fields and near us waiting to be harvested.

RingtheBells · 05/09/2020 14:25

Hopefully you will get some there, Iceland and Waitrose sometimes have stuff that is in short supply also. Tesco seems to be the worst place for harder to get things
