I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 20:55

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
LadyLairdArgyll · 02/09/2020 22:35

weird OP... weird thread... Hmm

bestnest · 02/09/2020 22:36

"If you have a job outside the home and don't feel that ' housewife' is appropriate then get it changed on the insurance. You phrased your OP as if you were a housewife but objected to the term."

This!

ProfessorPootle · 02/09/2020 22:38

My husband put this on our youngest’s birth certificate as my occupation, it is there for all eternity. When they asked him if I worked he said no because I was on maternity leave, idiot.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 02/09/2020 22:40

Very weird thread. Either you or your dh have listed you as housewife. Not sure why you are so affronted. Call the insurance company and change it.

littlecatfeet · 02/09/2020 22:40

Before I was married, I used to put "trust fund drifter" or "riverboat gambler" on forms. Grin

jackstini · 02/09/2020 22:42

My DH is listed as househusband - that's what he is

If you have another job, fair enough to be annoyed; if not, I don't know what you are worried about

LonginesPrime · 02/09/2020 22:42

I do the insurance for both our cars, including the one I’m a named driver on. Insurers don’t care!

They don't care whether they have a valid contract?

Pizzaonthebeach · 02/09/2020 22:43

So just say what your job title or business is. Simple really and no need to create unnecessary fuss

loobylou10 · 02/09/2020 22:44

WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 22:45

You don’t stop being a parent when you’re at work, or when your kids are in school, or out with friends, or with a babysitter... or when your children grow up...

You nest of vipers, yes I arrange the insurance, and hell would freeze over before I describe myself as a housewife. I have changed to a different provider with a better premium.

Self employed = MLM or prostitution, really? What I do is irrelevant.

OP posts:
Otherpeoplesteens · 02/09/2020 22:47

I have, in the very recent past, had to list myself as "housewife" for insurance purposes as that was the closest description.

I am a man.

ChickenwingChickenwing · 02/09/2020 22:48

OP who has described you as a housewife? It's not the insurer that selected the job description Confused

purpleme12 · 02/09/2020 22:48

Well to be fair if you'd given them chance to make the change on there for occupation you don't know if it would have made it cheaper so it's not really comparable to the new company anyway is it. As it's not got the same information on it Grin

Rachie1973 · 02/09/2020 22:49

Lol. I love it when it gets to snake reference point,

Housewife/support worker/mum

I don’t care. I know my own value.

SummerSummerSummertime · 02/09/2020 22:52

Oh ffs just don't put housewife on the form if you are not a housewife OP 🤷🏻‍♀️

arethereanyleftatall · 02/09/2020 22:53

@Worried234
Spot on!! That is exactly what I was thinking as I read the thread.

nancybotwinbloom · 02/09/2020 22:55

I'm still not sure why your angry though?
Can someone please explain?

Jux · 02/09/2020 22:55

What? So they didn't even ask dh, let alone you? They just assumed your employment status? From what information?

Yes, I would change provider too.

I once refused to have a particular building firm do a - quite large - job for us because the guy they sent round to size it up and quote only spoke to dh even though I had arranged for him to come and was paying, the job was being done entirely for my convenience and no one else's (all of which he was aware of). I made no bones about telling his boss why as well.

SummerPoppies · 02/09/2020 22:56

Did the occupation list have Troll option?

I do the insurance for both mine and Husbands car. He is the main driver of his car, with me as named and i'm the main driver of mine with him as named.
The insurers have no idea who is filling in the details online, it could be a martian from mars for all they know. As long as the details are correct, no one cares.

purpleme12 · 02/09/2020 22:56

@nancybotwinbloom

I'm still not sure why your angry though? Can someone please explain?
Presumably she's angry they made a mistake But she's not bothered to correct it instead she's posted this on here and changed providers lol
Tootletum · 02/09/2020 22:58

I don't really understand the issue tbh. I'm also self employed and am shortly quitting all my clients to stay at home (or rather stay at home without getting paid). So I'll update with whatever is closest in the job title database. Obviously I would prefer "unpaid housekeeper and domestic administrator" Grinbut who cares what someone else wants to call me.

ViciousJackdaw · 02/09/2020 22:58

I renewed my insurance recently. I cannot recall there being an option for #livingmybestlife in the drop down menu. How many more people do you need to recruit until you get the pink Range Rover?

MarinaMarinara · 02/09/2020 22:58

My husband is a stay at home dad so his insurance says “homemaker” this year, previously it has said “househusband”, whichever the insurance co happens to have as an option. I can see why you would object to having the wrong thing listed (although they do tend to go off what the client tells them...) but really don’t understand why the term seems in and of itself to be so objectionable to you. If DH wasn’t a househusband my job would be a lot harder, and I suspect my career would have stalled a bit after having children. As it is, thanks to having him at home I am confident that my children are well cared for by a loving parent, and I have the flexibility to work late/be away overnight/go to networking events whenever necessary. I also do not have the mental load of ensuring there is good in the house or the washing is done etc. That is an incredibly valuable role and I appreciate him hugely for doing it - I think we work well as a partnership.

AlwaysLatte · 02/09/2020 23:07

I think it sounds slightly outdated but it wouldn't bother me too much. If you have a job then obviously they've made a mistake as they should have put 'long distance lorry driver' or whatever it is you do, on there.

Pobblebonk · 02/09/2020 23:12

The insurance company wouldn't accept "self-employed" as an occupation, any more than it would accept "employed" - because they're not occupations.
