I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 20:55

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
LittleDoritt · 02/09/2020 23:12

Wow, this is the most irritating thread ever Confused

Soapysoap · 02/09/2020 23:14

Jeez. You sound like a daily express reporter.
Sensational performance.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
I think your report on women actually liking to be referred to as housewives will cause a stir among the professionally offended.
Congratulations. You've done your job.
I'm a housewife by the way 😂😂

gutentag1 · 02/09/2020 23:15

Why would they list that as your occupation then, they must have got it from somewhere?

CheetasOnFajitas · 02/09/2020 23:19

I don’t understand. You arranged the insurance, so what did you write/select on the form when it asked for your occupation? You sure as hell don’t work in writing or communications! Grin

Pipandmum · 02/09/2020 23:20

If you are self employed why didn't you put that as your occupation? I don't understand - surely the policy only has the information given to it when the policy was taken out?
I haven't seen 'housewife' as an occupation choice on any form in years. Self employed is always there though.

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/09/2020 23:20

9 pages and we still don't know what op actually does?

I hate the term housewife I'm with you on that but someone checked that box.. take it up with them

The only way that could happen is if that’s what you declared last year though.......
KeepSmiling89 · 02/09/2020 23:28

OP, in terms of this thread and your argument, what you actually do is VERY relevant.

You're self employed and make your own money....by doing what? Fair enough if you don't want to disclose but you've opened yourself up to the replies you've been getting by not being more specific.

Yes, the term 'housewife' has some negative 1950s connotations but only if you allow it to get to you.
In the grand scheme of things, if this is getting you so p**d off, you must live quite a sad life.

If you are a troll....hope you've had fun 😀 I know I have reading the responses!

PegasusReturns · 02/09/2020 23:28

What I do is irrelevant

It’s not because I don’t think anyone can make out from your ranting what the actual position is.

If you’re not in paid employment then you’re a housewife/homemaker or retired.

If you have a job then you should have doe I died your job.

But why you’re getting your knickers in a twist regarding use of the term housewife when what you appear to be saying is it doesn't apply to your circumstances I have no idea

kleew1 · 02/09/2020 23:31

I work in insurance, one of the questions is what do you do and in which industry... Since you deal with the insurance i'd assume you've filled the quote out wrongly. On our systems there is also houseparent fwiw

nancybotwinbloom · 02/09/2020 23:33

Op what options were there to choose from?

Whitneylilyrose · 02/09/2020 23:33

Congratulations

WerkHorse · 02/09/2020 23:35

'self employed' is not a job title though is it? If you're a plumber you can be self employed or you can work for a plumbing company. Your occupation is plumber. Your occupation is relevant.

What's the big secret? Is it illegal? (Dealer?) Or perhaps you're a del boy wannabe?

FOR GOD'S SAKE WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION???

Kaiserin · 02/09/2020 23:36

The only way that could happen is if that’s what you declared last year though.......

Hmm, no, it could also be an error on the insurer's end.
You can't assume the error was on OP's end.

I had to deal with a few banks and utility providers who were thoroughly unable to correctly record my full name and address, even after being repeatedly corrected, so I can imagine an insurer doing something stupid like defaulting to "housewife" if the occupation field is somehow blank or contains an unknown value.

Wotsitsarecheesy · 02/09/2020 23:39

I have seen the term 'not working' used before now, but not sure that was related to insurance.

I put housewife down for me. It fits what I do, and I don't worry about it. Homemaker feels a bit twee to me, and I refuse to say I am a stay at home mum when my kids are all teenagers.

Deadringer · 02/09/2020 23:40

Jesus who cares? Just put Troll under occupation, seems about right.

BadLad · 02/09/2020 23:40

I think I'll say "Mumsnetter" as my occupation next time I have to renew my insurance.

Although the premium will probably be higher once they assume I'm likely to get livid and incandescent at every other driver.

ZombieFan · 02/09/2020 23:41

Whats wrong with housewife? You work at home and your a wife? If it gets you good insurance whats the problem?

TorgosPizza · 02/09/2020 23:44

I'd probably prefer "homemaker", but there's nothing wrong with being a "housewife", either.

They still exist, even beyond the 1950s, and in my experience, there are a fair few who would like to be housewives, if it were possible. It's not for everyone or every situation, but it's nothing to be ashamed of, and I find it ironic that some who insist that being a "sex worker" is a completely valid career choice turn up their noses at the idea of the humble "housewife".

Soapysoap · 02/09/2020 23:45

@ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup where are you? Please come back 🤣

stayathomer · 02/09/2020 23:48

Just laughing here, I'm an author, but I dont earn well anything really, so when this comes up it goes something like this: 'well, I guess I'm unemployed, like, we have kids, so, um, I guess, can you put sahm?' Dh: 'She's an author. She has loads of books out.' Me: 'I dont make enough money. Honestly sahm is great' Them: 'How much do you earn?' I tell them then we all agree with sahmGrin

LemonyFace · 02/09/2020 23:49

Jeez, you're angry OP! Still, I enjoyed everyone else on the thread Grin

Guineapigbridge · 03/09/2020 00:03

Before I was married, I used to put "trust fund drifter" or "riverboat gambler" on forms.
Gold.

Guineapigbridge · 03/09/2020 00:03

I put politician in sometimes. Just for a laugh.

Guineapigbridge · 03/09/2020 00:04

DH puts 'consultant' which is just as meaningless as 'self-employed'
