I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 20:55

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/09/2020 19:13

MLM? Surely not!!

DonnaDonna01 · 03/09/2020 19:15

This must be a joke, in the middle of a world pandemic, employment at an all time low (and only going to get worse) and our economic on it knees, your biggest worry/problem us being called a housewife in error! There will be lots of people out there OP who would love this to be their biggest worry.

TatianaBis · 03/09/2020 19:16

I hear ya OP I’m not a ‘housewife’ either.

It’s really outdated term.

Namechangr9000 · 03/09/2020 19:16

*It's surely considered invalid if the form and the agreement boxes agreeing to the terms and conditions and so on are not filled out by the person who is taking out the insurance.

Essentially you are taking out a contract in another persons name. That isn't legal..so if the insurer didn't want to pay out and then found out that the insurance policy had not been taken out by the insured then it wouldn't be valid and they wouldn't have to stick to it!*

I fill in the forms because I have more time, am quicker at it and because DH is dyslexic. I save them on confused etc, show him the cheapest options and we discuss which one is best. He calls up his old insurer to check they can't match the price/cancel, so it's not as if he doesnt know about it.

fatgirlslimmer · 03/09/2020 19:18

Did you use confused.com?

Worstyear2020 · 03/09/2020 19:21

I was working when I had my children then got married, became sahm and changed my family name. I had to update my name in all of my children's birth certificates as well as occupation to 'housewife' even though I wasn't when they were born. I am working again and still have housewife on my children"s birth certificates, how ashamed I must feel! Hmm

JaniceBattersby · 03/09/2020 19:22

Right, time to fill in the insurance form again..

Hmm...

“Hello, is that Churchill? Yes, I’m having trouble filling in my insurance form because you seem to have missed out the ‘bossbabe’ box hun.

Is it golf or cycling?

Darkstarrheart · 03/09/2020 19:32

@Feminist10101

For the benefit of people still asking the OP has said she works in insurance.

Where?!

Sorry, misread it.
daisychain1620 · 03/09/2020 19:35

Weird but entertaining thread! I personally don't find the title housewife insulting but I can see how it can sound outdated and many people will think of a 50's happy housewife complete with pinafore dutifully cleaning the house for her hubby to come home.
I find it strange that OP got annoyed by something she has done, came on here to rant, insults others by telling them to 'use brain cells' but only gives us snippets information. Bizarre. OP, your self employed somethingness is not keeping you very busy if you're so pissed off by this mistake and fellow Mumsnetters.

petelacey · 03/09/2020 19:35

You would be surprised at the categories that attract the higher and lower insurance costs. Trust me, being listed as 'Housewife' costs you less than 'Director' or some other more glamorous categories.
It's not personal, housewives are considered a 'good' risk. Stable environment as in clubbing or going out every night, and also not likely to travel at peak traffic times for work.

amusedbush · 03/09/2020 19:37

@KeepSmiling89

OP I'm guessing you have another job. However job titles can actually impact premiums. I didn't realise that til a while ago...maybe he put housewife as it meant cheaper insurance premiums...I dunno...
I didn’t realise either until I renewed in March. I’m a PhD student but ‘student’ put my premiums up. I went for ‘researcher’, which is technically true (doctoral researcher!) and saved me cash Grin
WhoKnowsWhatsAroundTheCorner · 03/09/2020 19:37

I’m a housewife. It covers an utter multitude of roles - including being a carer of kids with chronic illness. It’s just a convenient label. I could put retired Doctor, but housewife is more accurate.
The term should have more respect, that would help.

momtoboys · 03/09/2020 19:38

"Okay, work your brain cells. I am self employed. I am not lying, why would I? I am a named driver because I rarely use the car - I cycle if I need to go anywhere. My children are old enough to drive. I am not a house wife. I am not a stay at home mother"

What ya' are is weirdly aggressive.

momtoboys · 03/09/2020 19:41

I do wish you could reply under someone's comment. There are some great ones on here I would like to encourage but its loses its interest when the comment goes to page 21!

daisychain1620 · 03/09/2020 19:41

Don't think our happy housewife is coming back

Darkstarrheart · 03/09/2020 19:43

@Howallergic

Darkstarrheart Would you prefer 'unemployed'? What occupation would you deem acceptable?
What do you mean by 'deem acceptable'? I'm not being snobby, I'm not a housewife because I'm not a wife! Why are you taking it so personally?
nancybotwinbloom · 03/09/2020 19:44

I wish I knew what the OP did for a living

Hells74 · 03/09/2020 19:45

Spoken like a true housewife trying to justify not having a job!

OhCaptain · 03/09/2020 19:45

@TatianaBis

I hear ya OP I’m not a ‘housewife’ either.

It’s really outdated term.

What are you then?
Nellisterr · 03/09/2020 19:46

WOW what an aggressive OP... Interesting thread though Grin

momtoboys · 03/09/2020 19:46

Worried234
You might not be a housewife, but by the sounds of it, you're a bit of a twat.

I desperately want to be friends with Worried234 in the real world!

gottakeeponmovin · 03/09/2020 19:46

Just change it to what you do then. What's your problem?

Babs709 · 03/09/2020 19:49

What do you mean by 'deem acceptable'? I'm not being snobby, I'm not a housewife because I'm not a wife! If someone asked your profession, what would you say?
