Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:

@purpleme12

It always does surprise me how many people when you ask them what their occupation is say self employed. At work I always have to say yes but what's your actual job title
Exactly. A self-employed what?!
UsedUpUsername · 03/09/2020 11:13

Also, I vote Facebook reseller

HelloMissus · 03/09/2020 11:14

‘Self employed’ is not a job/career.

JulieHere · 03/09/2020 11:20

@AchyBreakyFart

Grin Just loving your directness!

'Eg 'Delivery driver'- high premiums
'Self employed penis crochet maker' - no use of car so lower premiums
Your job title is not irrelevant to insurers
I assume if you run your self employed penis crocheting business from home, you have declared this on your home insurance, for example?
Just bloody tell them for gawds sake'

ThirstyGhost · 03/09/2020 11:23

Who gets this angry about an error on an insurance form? Walk it off princess.

Totally agree, maybe OP could change her title to ‘professionally offended’🤷🏼‍♀️
nosswith · 03/09/2020 11:28

If househusband is an option, I don't see the issue. I'd prefer stay at home mum or stay at home dad myself, but a full time parent is definitely not someone to be thought of as unemployed.

KetoPenguin · 03/09/2020 11:29

This thread just proves MNers love to argue. Most of the time they would say housewife was a very old fashioned sexist term and we should be smashing the patriarchy and keeping our surnames and demanding our equal rights.

YouJustDoYou · 03/09/2020 11:29

You're so charming 😂😂

PhilSwagielka · 03/09/2020 11:30

If it isn't, what do you do if you get asked what you do for a living and you are self-employed? Do you just say outright what your job/business is (freelance translator in my case)?
MidnightCitrus · 03/09/2020 11:30

Househusband is an option ( I know, because thats what I put DH as)

but Househusband is available, so how is it demeaning to have Housewife?
TenDays · 03/09/2020 11:36

@SouthWestLolly

Glad your HB is getting his oats.
I saw what you did there.
KetoPenguin · 03/09/2020 11:37

Because housewives were treated like secondclass citizens compared to their breadwinning husbands for many years and that stigma remains.

What you do for a living literally means what you do for a living. Being self employed / employed by a company is completely irrelevant?!

Why are people so confused by this?

So you want housewife removed?
nancybotwinbloom · 03/09/2020 11:44

Do we know if there is a job title yet?

dany174 · 03/09/2020 11:47

Yes, I'm a freelance Graphic Designer and if asked what I do for a living I say Graphic Designer (I don't even say freelance because to many people this translates to cheap).

Why would you say Self-employed? Its not a job its a job status (employed, self-employed, unemployed)

If your an accountant working for a company and someone asks what you do for a living you don't say "I'm employed." You say you're an accountant.

daisypond · 03/09/2020 11:47

Wife and housewife actually don’t necessarily mean “married”. They are old words and just mean “woman” or “woman who looks after the house”. Not the first dictionary meaning nowadays, to be sure, but the older meaning still stands.

CarrieFour · 03/09/2020 11:50

Just fucking phone them and change it then.

What a bloody thing to get worked up over. Some people are desperate to be oppressed.

RedRiverShore · 03/09/2020 11:52

When I was semi retired my main occupation was housewife on my insurance, I also had to put my p/t administrator job on but as it was under 16 hrs it wasn’t classed as my main occupation, SAHP would not have been appropriate in my case, Homemaker, housewife or househusband covers more people, I think unemployed means actively looking for work for insurance purposes

nancybotwinbloom · 03/09/2020 11:52

I'd love to be a housewife full
Time. I'd love to have the money to not have to work.

I'm happy dicking around the house and cooking etc. I like looking after people. I'd be able to spend more time with my mum and other wider family.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

I could plan my own routine and watch all my programmes whilst ironing etc. Spend more time training the dog.

Hell of a lot better than having to talk to half the pricks in my work.

Humbersider · 03/09/2020 11:55

Amen, @nancybotwinbloom. Amen.

Househusband is a different thing from bread winning husband.
1990s · 03/09/2020 11:57

Shocked at the attitude of most of the people on this thread!

"Housewife" is not a job. If I wasn't employed, I would put unemployed, nothing wrong with that. Some people don't want or need a job!

Such patriarchal bullshit for so many reasons.
