I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
JovialNickname · 03/09/2020 11:57

So you actually are a housewife then. Apologies if you don't like the term but it is synonymous with SAHM. You have my sympathies though, when I got married at 22 my status was entered as "spinster" on the certificate! Sometimes it's just terminology not a personal affront.

MrsJBaptiste · 03/09/2020 11:57

God, I wish this was all I had to get worked up about...

Did you miss the bit where OP confirmed that she applied for the insurance herself and therefore HER answers are why she is down as housewife?
Happygogoat · 03/09/2020 12:04

Scrolled all this way for the job title ...

Blatantly MLM and pissed off that even your husband doesn't see it as a real job and put housewife!

Nothing wrong with being a housewife, the term is a bit outdated but this is not the hill to die on and get sooo angry OP

The husband did not fill in the form. The OP did. So any occupation titles came from her, unless the insurance company has made a mistake.
AzraiL · 03/09/2020 12:13

@littlecatfeet 🤣🤣🤣

Seriously though OP, you're in a MLM aren't you. You wanted to put 'Boss Babe 👊 CEO 💯 #Blessed 🙏 #Yasqueenmakeitrain 🌧 #Payingthebills 📬 #Mercedeshericome 🥰' right?

Ah yes!! Why didn't I click that "self employed" but won't tell us what blatantly means hunbot.

Better to be a housewife. At least you're not losing money that way!

ShirleyPhallus · 03/09/2020 12:22

Absolute LOL at all these people defending being a housewife because there is just soooo much to keep them busy. Women who work in proper jobs also do all that home making business you know (and hopefully everyone’s husband pulls their weight too Wink)

Being a housewife is a pretty good luxury and bit of a doss. Very hard work it ain’t.

bookmum08 · 03/09/2020 12:23

1990s unemployed and not working are different things though. Unemployed means you are actively seeking work and probably on government stats as seeking work. Not working out of choices and having no need for paid employment (living from one wage, living off a lotto win, an inheritance) is different.

RedRiverShore · 03/09/2020 12:29

I wouldn’t put unemployed if I wasn’t working and I wasn’t looking for work or insurance will be more expensive, unfortunately unemployed people pay more

Pantheon · 03/09/2020 12:31

I'm a sahm at the moment and flinched a bit when someone said I was a housewife, so I get it. It feels outdated.
I think homemaker is better as it's less gendered.

bookmum08 · 03/09/2020 12:33

I hadn't actually thought about how different jobs might affect any insurance costs so this might not be relevant but I have never understood this obsession with what people's job titles are. Why do we need to know it so much? Like on my daughter's birth certificate. Why do we (the parents) have to put what our jobs are. What is the point (other than someone in 100 years time doing the family history).
I hate it when you watch quiz shows and it will be "This is Mary from Barnsley who is a Admin Assistant". Why do we need to know that? Is that really what defines Mary? I would rather know something about her actually personality. Something about HER.

RedRiverShore · 03/09/2020 12:33

OP must have put self employed and insurance must have thought it was a euphemism for housewife

Longlockdown · 03/09/2020 12:33

Lloyds Bank had to put my occupation down as Headmaster. I'm a woman. Headteacher wasn't an option. Unbelievably, this was only in 2017 and I saw the screen in the meeting and checked the options.
Yup, women could only be teachers.
Unbelievable.

PrtScn · 03/09/2020 12:41

What if the man was a sahp? Bet housewife wouldn’t be the option. Is househusband on the list? I’d be mildly irritated by the blatant sexism to be honest

Househusband would be on the list yes Or alternatively houseparent if you have children
user1495884620 · 03/09/2020 12:43

@Guineapigbridge

I put politician in sometimes. Just for a laugh.
Shit, don't do that! With their propensity for testing their eyesight by taking drives, their premiums must be sky high!
bookmum08 · 03/09/2020 12:43

Longlockdown sometimes though a job title is kinda just that and although the history may be a bit sexist it actually doesn't matter. For example a nurse who is at the level of Sister or Matron are often still called that regardless of whether they are female or male.
Except for very old-fashioned public schools (probably) male teachers aren't called Master so Headmaster is wrong anyway.

yes it is, as thats what I put DH as
Marchitectmummy · 03/09/2020 12:47

If you are self employed why can't you state what you are self employed doing on your insurance like everyone else does?

Plumber - self employed or employed is a plumber
Graphic designer - is a graphic designer regardless of self employed
Retailer - whether shop or Internet if you resell ypu are in retail

Really could you not work thsy out yourself. Self employed does not give an insurer any idea of how risky you are driving a car!

Its so simple and such common knowledge!

DarkmilkAddict · 03/09/2020 12:53

I think it should be “stay at home parent” and then unemployed once they’re over 18. Not entirely fair though as homemaking is obviously a billion tasks that tend to fall on women.

House husband is never going to catch on let’s face it

But I was semi retired not unemployed, unemployed would have sent my premiums up, I’m retired now but the housework hasn’t miraculously disappeared so I guess I am still a housewife but if a retired option is there I will put that

But not all housewives have children.
