I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:
CouldBeOuting · 03/09/2020 09:01

Well I have a NEVER had my own car insurance. I’ve only ever been a named driver on DHs policy and I’ve arranged all our insurances for over 30 years. I usually get asked “do you have MrOutings permission” or words to that effect and then I crack on.

I was on the policy as a housewife or homemaker (defending on the terminology used by the insurer) for a long time. When I became employed the policy went up as a result. I’m now the main driver as well but still as a named driver.

I don’t see what is so shameful about being a housewife TBH. I also can’t see how OPs insurers had her down as a housewife if she arranged the insurance. They would have asked for her occupation and she would have answered........ unless she is always as evasive as she has been on here.....

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 03/09/2020 09:03

MLM for sure!!

kirinm · 03/09/2020 09:14

For the purposes of assessing risk, your occupation IS important. If you don't tell the truth, be prepared to be told you're in breach of your policy if you ever need to claim.

Self-employed is meaningless for assessing risk. And given you were the one who applied for the insurance, you're the one responsible for the fuck up, insurance company isn't going to assume 'housewife' unless you've given them reason to.

kirinm · 03/09/2020 09:17

@LimaFoxtrotCharlie

Well, if the policy is set up in his name with you as a named driver as you described then you shouldn't be setting up the insurance, your husband is required to do that for himself

Why do so many posters believe that the main driver has to set up the policy? I’m a named driver, DH is the policy holder. I’ve organised the car insurance for years by filling in his details as main driver then paying with a card in my name. Perfectly legal

Applying for the insurance is perfectly fine but if someone is being listed as named driver when actually, they predominantly use the car and they've been listed as 'named driver' to reduce the premium, that will enable an insurer to void the policy.

OP, you seem to have gotten very wound ip about everyone's speculation. But this has been down to the lack of information you provided followed by vagueness. Would it have hurt to say I'm a self-employed florist for example? Insurance quote sites aren't the best for giving a comprehensive list of occupations, so your DH probably just picked that as your occupation (or something similar) wasn't listed. No need to get so heated about it. Your occupation doesn't define you.

RTFT PEOPLE. Her DH did not have anything to do with the application. She did it herself.
SleepingStandingUp · 03/09/2020 09:24

Someone at home will have multiple occupations, they could all be included. Someone at home with children will also have a different risk profile when driving to someone who is staying at home purely to manage the house, where is this reflected in the term housewife?
By that logic though you'd list everything that occupies your time.
School teacher
Parents
Taxi driver for teens
Taxi driver for husband's occasional nights out
Shopper
Midnight MacDonalds fetcher

Which is frankly absurd.

Op is aggrieved because she didn't answer a question or someone clicked the wrong box and now she's been muddled in with all those people who don't work as of she's some lowly house dweller Vs Chief Executive and Director of Finance and Head of Sales and Lead Accounting Officer for the company she runs. You know, because she's better than those other people

MidnightCitrus · 03/09/2020 09:24

@ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup

Not a 'stay at home mother', I am self employed and yes I do make my own money - what an odd question.
So what is it you do? Do you get an income from it? Do you file for taxes etc? (Is it younique? Forever Aloe? Bodysuit at home?)

Your husband would have select housewife, why dont you have the arse with him? Its not the insurance company's fault

MidnightCitrus · 03/09/2020 09:26

So she is pissed off that they offered to renew her policy, based on information she provided last year?? WTF?

LadyLairdArgyll · 03/09/2020 09:28

If the Insurer cannot get OP to share her occupation Mumsnet have no chance... although why it's such a secret is anybody's guess 🤔 OP needs to accept that the Occupation box needs to be filled and therefore failing to provide this information (which she clearly declined to provide) they will default to the simplest option. 🌺

Regularsizedrudy · 03/09/2020 09:40

You need to work on your communication skills op or you’ll never get a job Grin

GeorginaTheGiant · 03/09/2020 09:51

This is so bizarre...

CandyLeBonBon · 03/09/2020 09:53

Blimey op, calm down and have a cup of tea. It's one thing to be irritated by some words on a form (fair enough) but to rant at strangers who, in the main, understand your point but are simply trying to work out what the problem is exactly, comes across as a bit unhinged!

If you fill out the forms, why are you annoyed that you ticked 'housewife' as a choice if that's not your occupation? Or do you just object to the term generally?

popsydoodle4444 · 03/09/2020 09:54

I use to work in car insurance. There's a marked difference in risk factors with the underwriters of your insurance policy between a housewife and unemployed person that would affect your policy premium.

Thisismytimetoshine · 03/09/2020 10:22

They won't accept "self employed" as an occupation, because it's not.
They don't care who pays your salary, they need to know what you actually do to earn it.
I'm guessing it's something bizarre and embarrassing, to cause this much ire?

ifiwasascent · 03/09/2020 10:33

Self employed 😂😂 you're a STAM/ housewife. If you don't like it go get an actual paid job.

SmellsLikeFeet · 03/09/2020 10:38

I'm guessing selling used slippers and shoes on ebay to 'collectors'
SweetPetrichor · 03/09/2020 10:44

If you have a job, why didn’t you put that down?

Housewife is a pretty accurate description...if a woman stays home and leaves the work to the man, what else do you call them. If it’s not the 1950s then don’t act it out.

AchyBreakyFart · 03/09/2020 10:46

This is such a bizarre thread!

OP crazy angry about something on a form-which someone in her household must have completed????

Then argues with everyone on the thread whilst admitting she doesn't have a job but is self employed to do something she refuses to disclose

It's like the ramblings of an angry toddler!

👏🏻 They 👏🏻 need 👏🏻 to 👏🏻 know 👏🏻 what 👏🏻 you 👏🏻 do 👏🏻 in 👏🏻 case👏🏻 this 👏🏻 affects 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 use 👏🏻 of 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 car 👏🏻 even 👏🏻 if 👏🏻 you're 👏🏻 a 👏🏻 named 👏🏻 driver

Eg 'Delivery driver'- high premiums
'Self employed penis crochet maker' - no use of car so lower premiums

Your job title is not irrelevant to insurers

I assume if you run your self employed penis crocheting business from home, you have declared this on your home insurance, for example?

Just bloody tell them for gawds sake

FTMF30 · 03/09/2020 11:00

@CheetasOnFajitas I did 'RTFT'. I honestly thought that was some kind of mistake because I didn't know someone could arrange the insurance as a named driver. The way I understand it is that you either get yourself insured in your own right or the car owner can add you as a named driver on their insurance themselves.

In any case, my point still stands. OP is getting all heated about being referred to as a housewife but didn't initially state that she is in employment and went on to be quite mysterious yet defensive about what she actually does. Even worse if she has in fact sorted the insurance herself as it's likely to be an error on her part. Every form asks for an occupation and it seems she didn't list one.

purpleme12 · 03/09/2020 11:00

It always does surprise me how many people when you ask them what their occupation is say self employed. At work I always have to say yes but what's your actual job title

jackstini · 03/09/2020 11:02

But what you do isn't irrelevant to the insurer; the premiums are calculated on average risk of your profession

Just put your job in!

ArdoCycle · 03/09/2020 11:07

If you’re in charge of the insurance why didn’t you just list your occupation correctly?! You’re sounding like a bit of a nutter over what is presumably a clerical error either on your part or theirs...

Have you got some other stuff on your mind...are you ok?

MidnightCitrus · 03/09/2020 11:08

Where did they get the detail for RENEWAL!?!?!? Whoever filled out the form last year, would have entered that data!!

FFS - IF you are EMPLOYED (self or otherwise) YOU DIDNT ENTER IT LAST YEAR (or when you last bought a policy)

UsedUpUsername · 03/09/2020 11:11

I understand the dislike of the word housewife, but I guess it is ok if househusband is an option too. Personally I prefer ‘stay at home mum’

Some housewives (and househusbands?) don’t have children so the description is accurate and probably better than unemployed, which has really negative undertones.
