I'm a fucking HOUSEWIFE?

ToadinTheHoleWithKetchup · 02/09/2020 20:55

Just had the car insurance renewal on DH's car. I am a named driver, and the details listed state that I am a 'housewife'. How the fuck is this even a category?

OP posts:

It never ceases to amaze me, the pathetic things which people get so angry about they find it necessary to post on a forum. Get over yourself!

weepingwillow22 · 03/09/2020 03:33

I think it is about time terms such as housewife were updated as it does sound rather subservient to the man and many women may not be married. Someone at home will have multiple occupations, they could all be included. Someone at home with children will also have a different risk profile when driving to someone who is staying at home purely to manage the house, where is this reflected in the term housewife?

purpleme12 · 03/09/2020 03:47

It's funny really all these people getting het up about the term housewife
When I have to fill these in in the system and ask the customer and they don't have a job at that point they often aren't really keen on me putting unemployed and they prefer housewife or house parent. (Which is fine I then put that down)

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2020 04:19

@Ilovesausages

I remember when I got married I wasn’t actually working as I was mid career change. I wanted them to put ‘unemployed’ but they wouldn’t because it didn’t look very nice apparently. They put something like ‘community volunteer’ 🤷🏻‍♀️
They probably did you a favour as I believe that it costs more if you're unemployed. Something to do with the stress more likely to lead to accidents or lack of money meaning you might put off essential repairs.

It's a difficult one if you don't have regular paid employment and all you can do is look at the list of choices and see what you can legitimately use. Possibly try a few in case there's one that's cheaper. Housewife is old fashioned though but you can't just use SAHP instead as it wouldn't be right for people who don't have DC.

Friend of mine would struggle with this, she's child free and hasn't worked since mid 40s. She's been a trailing spouse following her DHs big job to a country where she's not been allowed to work, but he was made redundant and they could retire but he might decide to take another job or do some consultancy work if the opportunity arises.

She does various voluntary roles as well as runs the house and is unlikely to work again so could describe herself as a housewife, a volunteer, unemployed or retired. But unemployed implies that you're seeking work and retired suggests never planning to work again and being in receipt of a pension.

@purpleme12

Lol this is such an attention seeking thread
So true
NationalBust · 03/09/2020 06:56

Our insurance lists both DH and I as "Mr". We are listed as married and I have a very clearly female name. Haven't ever bothered to change it. Wonder if it'll be an issue if we both died in an accident, would they assume he was having an extramarital affair with a woman behind his husband's back? Grin

TooGood2BeFalse · 03/09/2020 07:03

Why so unpleasant OP?

SqidgeBum · 03/09/2020 07:18

@TooGood2BeFalse it seems the OP isnt a housewife (and instead is some secret agent/self employed private detective) but is annoyed that her DH put housewife on the insurance form, and wants to show the world how being called a housewife is the worst thing on the planet.

I mean, she could have just changed providers or corrected the form and not told Mumsnet house INSULTING it is to be a housewife, but why miss out on the opportunity for attention?

littlecatfeet · 03/09/2020 07:21

I have it.

The OP is a house employed self wife.

rottiemum88 · 03/09/2020 07:31

I deal with the insurance, so don't need to have a word with dh. Have changed provider.

Well, if the policy is set up in his name with you as a named driver as you described then you shouldn't be setting up the insurance, your husband is required to do that for himself.

Also, occupation is a category of information that insurance providers rate on, so they absolutely didn't just decide that's what you were themselves. Someone TOLD them that's what you were. If not you then presumably your husband. Maybe he found it as difficult to get out of you what it is you actually do as the rest of the posters on this thread 🤷🏼‍♀️

Exactly what I was going to write 😂

In the days of everyone buying their insurance on the internet, the companies don't really care and it matters not one jot who actually bought the policy. As long as you're insured, based on accurate information, who cares who was sat at the keyboard at the time?

The DH is hardly going to talk himself into the crime of driving without insurance by telling the police/a court 'well actually it was my wife who bought my car insurance so the policy is invalid' is he?

Whenwillthisbeover · 03/09/2020 07:54

Self employed isn’t a job role though is it? The risks associated with being a self employed taxi driver are no doubt greater than those of a self employed accountant.

I’m sure this is just a goody thread to whip up a storm.

CoronaBollox · 03/09/2020 07:55

I suspect the insurance provider thought it wouldnt be polite to put insufferable arsehole...

Cocklepops · 03/09/2020 07:57

Is it bad that I’ve read all of OP’s comments in a Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet) voice? 🤔

Rosesarere · 03/09/2020 07:58

It sounds like you are just unemployed, unless you are earning money and paying your own taxes then you are self employed, if this is the case you need to notify the insurer- your insurance would be void if you were to have an accident and hadn't notified the insurer of your self employed occupation.

Youngatheart00 · 03/09/2020 08:08

God, this thread is exhausting.

You can’t just say ‘self employed’ - what do you actually DO to earn a living? It’s like saying what do you do for work? Oh, I’m employed. 🙄

A housewife is nothing to be ashamed of being if you’ve young children at home. It’s not a derogatory term. It’s a description, not an insult.

And no, I’m not a housewife myself, just don’t see an issue with it!

JulesCobb · 03/09/2020 08:15

Loving someone’s suggestion of housespouse.

SerendipitousDreams · 03/09/2020 08:22

I'm in Australia and we have 'Home Responsibilities' as an option when stating an occupation.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 03/09/2020 08:28

Why do so many posters believe that the main driver has to set up the policy? I’m a named driver, DH is the policy holder. I’ve organised the car insurance for years by filling in his details as main driver then paying with a card in my name. Perfectly legal

Gunpowder · 03/09/2020 08:32

Yes I do the same as Lima. If it weren’t legal you wouldn’t have brokers.

daisypond · 03/09/2020 08:32

Yes, there’s been a load of rubbish on here about who can set up the policy. There’s no such thing about only a certain person being required to do it.

JulieHere · 03/09/2020 08:48

Domestic goddess looking after the home and children sound better?
Managing Director of the home
SAHP
SAHM

Some put down work as looking after children/home?

Pick what you want to call yourself.

Pobblebonk · 03/09/2020 08:48

"Self-employed" is simply not an occupation. You could be a self-employed solicitor, prostitute, artist, actor, plumber, tailor, cook, accountant, nanny, dog-walker, you name it. insurers ask the question in order to be able to assess risk and simply being told someone is employed or self-employed doesn't get them any further.

JulieHere · 03/09/2020 08:49

Grin oh my that made me laugh
