@NowYouListenToMeFella
Slippers= death-trap. Unless there is Lego on the floor, in which case slippers = life-saver.

I hereby mandate that slippers should be banned, especially those novelty bunny types, & fluffy mules with a kitten heel. But slippers (preferably with steel toe-caps & thick rubber soles) MUST be worn at all times in Lego, Duplo & that cheap-but-just-as-good-stuff-they-sell-in-Wilko's designated areas.

Remember to remove & dispose of your slippers carefully- leaving just one jutting out at an awkward angle could be enough to trip up a parent, resulting in your NHS being swamped.

If you can't obtain slippers (it's August & hard to come by them before Christmas) you can make your own out of a pair of banana skins, but do remember to remove the fruit before placing on your feet.

😂😂😂 you could be onto something there with the steel toe cap and thick rubber sole slippers. I put my hand up to be your Irish distributor.

It's a deal, @nowyoulistentomefella, & I'm sure we don't need to worry about any of those pesky Brexit trade deals either. Remember when the news was all about Backstops? Those were the days!

I had a text from the GPs today (to all patients) saying they had been getting lots of abuse and it was not acceptable.Kind of sad really guess people are taking things out on them?

FIL gone into hospital and MIL unable to see him due to all this. He is elderly so that is pretty rubbish. Hope she can see him soon as he is quite unwell.

I just feel angry and duped, tonight.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 26/08/2020 20:12

I feel sorry for the gp's staff who have been getting abuse but it's not surprising that people are getting angry and lashing out. I can only see it getting worse, unfortunately, especially as the weather settles into the perma-gloom of autumn, and then before you know it, it's winter and we're still doing this shit. Given that the government's current strategy seems to be to do whatever the fearful can be whipped up by the media to demand, I can't see restrictions being lifted anytime soon and people's goodwill will run out with the sunshine.

I don't believe in verbally abusing people doing their job, rarely is the one doing it the instigator of any stupid 'rules' but can get irritated with jobsworths nonetheless.

I can definitely understand people being very very frustrated with what is supposed to be the N Health S

Keeping people away from ill relatives is not HEALTHY especially when they are very young or elderly. Whatever is wrong with someone when old it could be terminal and their health and immunity is compromised further when they are isolated.

No-one should be abusing health care staff but we really should be kicking up a stink about these harmful rules.

People are being awful. I’m public sector and the number of complaints about us undertaking our normal run of the mill business are through the roof. We’ve not changed anything, people have just got time on their hands and the inclination to lash out.

RealityExistsInTheHumanMind · 26/08/2020 20:24

As usual the way we are treating the young, the elderly and the otherwise vulnerable is appalling.

Us widely criticising past slave trading, nearer past (and still current) child abuse and racial profiling/abuse is all well and good but in the years to come, the powerful in this generation (and by association everyone) will be so castigated for this. (Along with other unrelated stupidities)

Supreme trolling of Boris from the school librarian here. Sheer brilliance.

I went out for lunch today and it was surprisingly normal. The staff didn’t wear visors or face masks and it was all quite relaxed.

Oh that is excellent. I hope he/she doesn't get into too much trouble for it!

That's just brilliant

Although I think 'Lord of the Flies' should be up there too, I'm sure it would have fitted in somewhere.

Yes to abuse. I got shouted at (and tbh I don't blame the guy) in reception the other day because we couldn't admit his friend to the ward (mental health unit) we dont have the space. It's so desperately sad and it's only going to get worse in terms of admissions I expect. People are at their wits end. The man was scared, and ok shouted at me when he shouldn't have but he was clearly absolutely desperate. It was awful.

HeIenaDove · 26/08/2020 20:37

I hated studying Lord of the Flies at school because there are no female characters in it.

Well yes - but it wouldn't have gone the same way if there had been girls there would it?

I'm damn sure it is the only reason we (humans) are still around that some women (adult human females) moderate the behaviour of men.
Not just some men, because they are brought up by women and that is what moderates most of them.

YES Very true

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 26/08/2020 20:47

Total tangent, but I read an article earlier this year about a real Lord of the Flies situation and they didn't all kill each other! They were teen schoolboys who stole a fishing boat and ended up marooned, I'll see if I can find it because it was fascinating - and very upbeat! The funniest thing was that when they were found and brought home they were arrested for stealing the boat Shock.

TheOrchidKiller · 26/08/2020 20:51

@Pixel7777 I hope your FIL gets the care he needs. It feels very cruel that people are denied visitors. In certain circumstances it's vital that family come in to visit. It's how we discovered that elderly relatives in our family were not getting the correct care (pre-covid).

We had the rather crackers act of having our temperatures taken to do a completely outdoors activity today, where we didn't see anyone else. Went along with it because we really wanted to do the activity. At the end the owner came & stood right next to us for a chat. There's no justification for these measures, & no consistency.

I like the thought of Boris reading The Twits.

I'd love to see that. Lord of the Flies was definitely dystopian and I don't think it would play out that way as a whole BUT I could see each individual event happening. A bit like a dystopian soap opera - it all happens, just not so much, so quickly, to so few.

Total tangent, but I've just finished Gather The Daughters, which has a Lord of the Flies but-with-girls strand to it (except the girls are pretty decent - its the parents they flee from who are awful).

Its good but has some dark themes (incest).

@WouldBeGood

I’m loving all the safety advice here today. 😃

Taking a long hard look at myself through the eyes of Giant Doctor...

I think we need a Giant Doctor version of What Would Jesus Do? to guide us henceforth. We also need to risk assess Giant Doctor as he looked like he was potentially sitting on people in those shitty memes, thereby putting literal / metaphorical pressure on Our Precious NHS.
RobinHobb · 26/08/2020 21:12

I've been pretty upbeat all week but it's all getting too much. What worries me is winter - my DC (2yo and 4yo) usually have sniffles all winter. And what if one of them needs a doctor? Sometimes they develop into ear or chest infections needing ABs. Our GP has literally unplugged their land line and asked to make appointments over the website and they'll call back but they never do. I'm scared that we are about to go into winter with no health service and my kids won't have access to doctors. I'm worried enough that I'm willing to sacrifice my emergency nest egg I was keeping for holidays and treats and throw money at it.

Is there such a thing as a private GP? There is no point in using the NHS GP anymore, they have closed their doors. If it's a fever of any sort then it's covid and if it's not covid but I have a fever for some other reason (eg UTI) I am not allowed in the GP practice anyway. There is no recourse - they might as well not be there. I'm worried. How will we get through winter with no healthcare?
