What was your favourite ice cream flavour or type when you were a child and now ?

I grewed up in the 70s and 80s when there wasn't quite the choice there is now. There was Lyons Maid, Walls and Midland Counties with vanilla, Cornish, raspberry ripple and Neopolitan. I think I liked Cornish the best. Some shops sold the fancy Napoli soft scoop ice cream - I usually had the lime flavour but sometimes orange or strawberry. I never liked chocolate ice cream. King Cones or Cornettos were just becoming popular in the mid 70s.

I haven't had any ice cream for years so I don't know what's popular these days. Is pistachio any good ?

Tutti frutti was my favours but I can't find any now. Sad
Rum and Raisin for me now, delicious! ☺️

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2020 18:26

Gino Genelli ice cream was the fucking best. Tutti Frutti was amazing.

Now I like classic vanilla. 1987 me would be very disappointed.

Pertella · 22/08/2020 18:26

Mint choccy chip.

Although I did like a lemon ice cream from the little kiosk at the beach we went to in the summer holidays.

Vanilla was my favourite as a child and it's still my favourite. Fior di Latte is a close second.

Mysa74 · 22/08/2020 18:28

Strawberry or raspberry ripple were huge treats when I was little. I like mint choc chip or strawberry cheesecake now... Or raspberry sorbet...
May have to pop to the shop, freezer is full of vegetables!

formerbabe · 22/08/2020 18:29

Vanilla as a child...now rum and raisin.

Not crazy about ice cream really...I prefer it as,an accompaniment to a hot pudding rather than by itself.

HeronLanyon · 22/08/2020 18:29

70s uk - chocolate (not great)
70s European - any and all Italian gelato and street vended slushes esp the green mint one.

Now - a good vanilla a good dark chocolate and something salty - had an amazing Roquefort ice-cream in Girona a few years ago absolutely perfect.

Sallyspoons · 22/08/2020 18:33

raspberry ripple without a doubt

iklboo · 22/08/2020 18:33

Raspberry ripple as a child
Blackcurrant & liquorice or pistachio now

CarlottaValdez · 22/08/2020 18:35

I liked vanilla which I called “yellow”. Now probably pistachio

Wafflehouse · 22/08/2020 18:37

I would’ve had all the flavours, except chocolate, when I was a kid (can’t get on with chocolate ice cream, it just seems like a powdery flavour?) even mixing a few together.

Now just a good vanilla. I’m boring now I’m older, even crisps are only enjoyable if they’re a good ready salted or salt and vinegar. I can’t be doing with fussy flavours anymore.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 22/08/2020 18:37

Raspberry ripple. Grin

WildRosie · 22/08/2020 18:50

Viennetta became the Vesta curry of the ice cream world a few decades ago. No suburban dinner party was complete without it.

Has anybody had bubblegum flavour ice cream ? The local Farmhouse Inn sells it - bright turquoise. Looks unappetising, goodness knows what it tastes like. Coffee ice cream sounds interesting but I expect it's not easy to make it relatively sweet over bitter.

The Napoli orange ice cream had little slivers of real orange in it which was a nice touch. The lime didn't - might have been a bit sour.

I used to love mint choc chip, I still do.

My all time favourite ice cream now is a really delicate violet flavour, from a particular ice cream shop in the south of France.

mnahmnah · 22/08/2020 18:56

I loved raspberry ripple and mint choc chip. I’ll often choose them now too. But I do like some of the more interesting flavours you get these days too

mnahmnah · 22/08/2020 18:57

@WildRosie

My boys love the bubblegum ice cream at our local farm too. With extra bubblegum sauce!!

Whathappenedtothelego · 22/08/2020 19:14

I remember Gino Ginelli ice cream!
But we didn't have it much, we were more likely to have Vienetta.

If I could choose in a shop, I would always have gone for a Toffee Crumble - or a Feast! Mint, original, and I once had coconut, in an orange wrapper, still remember how awed I felt, as I never knew that flavour existed.

Carouselfish · 22/08/2020 19:16

Used to be mint choc chip as a child. Now, rum and raisin or coffee flavour.

AriesTheRam · 22/08/2020 19:17

Cloudburstagain · 22/08/2020 19:19

70’s - Neopolitan
Now - pistachio or Turkish delight or chocolate orange

BikeRunSki · 22/08/2020 19:20

Pistachio then, pistachio now. Still difficult to find.

WildRosie · 22/08/2020 20:13

Bubblegum ice cream sounds awful enough but bubblegum sauce as well ? Confused
